Hasrat Jaipuri dead
MUMBAI, Sept 17 (PTI) — Renowned lyricist Hasrat Jaipuri, who penned over 3,000 songs in Hindi movies, died today at a private hospital in suburban Bandra following kidney failure, his family sources said. Hasrat (77) was admitted to Holy Family Hospital on Tuesday after he received a fracture from a fall. He was ailing for the last two-and-a-half years, the sources said. He is survived by wife, two sons and a daughter.

Chhibber’s term
NEW DELHI, Sept 17 (TNS) — A decision on a successor to Lt Gen B K N Chhibber, Governor of Punjab, is yet to be taken. Gen Chhibber’s five-year term expired today. However, according to Article 156 of the Constitution, the Governor shall, notwithstanding the expiration of his term, continue to hold office until his successor enter upon his office. The Centre is yet to name his successor, a Home Ministry spokesman said tonight. Gen Chhibber also holds additional charge as Administrator of Union Territory of Chandigarh.

Jena joins Cong
BHUBANESWAR, Sept 17 (PTI) — Ending months of speculation, former Union Minister and Janata Dal (S) leader Srikant Jena today formally joined the Congress saying it was time for all secular forces to join hands in the country. AICC General Secretary Madhavrao Scindia was winding up his news conference at the Biju Patnaik airport here when Mr Jena made a dramatic entry into the lounge taking those present by surprise.

Elected unopposed
ITANAGAR, Sept 17 (UNI) — Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Mukut Mithi and three other Congress candidates were declared elected unopposed to the 60-member state Assembly after the expiry of withdrawal of nominations today. State Planning Minister Thupten Tempa, Irrigation Minister and Flood Control Minister T.L. Rajkumar and former MLA Rajesh Tacho were the other Congress candidates declared elected.

3 TDP men hurt
HYDERABAD, Sept 17 (UNI) — Three ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP) workers were injured when bombs hurled at them allegedly by Congress workers at Padda Kulathala village in Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh late last night. The police here said seven Congress workers hurled bombs at the TDP men who were sitting near a place of worship.

Nurses hospitalised
NEW DELHI, Sept 17 (FOC) — Work in Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital suffered last night since 60 trainee nurses, including staff members were affected with food poisoning. According to the Deputy Medical Superintendent of the hospital, Dr R.P. Kaur, the incident occurred when a few trainee nurses felt giddiness after having snacks served at a party organised by the Nurses Welfare Association, The nurses have been hospitalised.

Iraq's complaint
BAGHDAD, Sept 17 (Reuters) — Iraq has again asked the United Nations (UN) to order a halt to almost daily attacks by US and British planes, enforcing two no-fly zones over the country, the official Iraqi news agency reported today. It said Baghdad's envoy to the UN wrote two letters to Secretary-General Kofi Annan and to the President of the Security Council, demanding that the international body act to stop the "aggression against Iraq".
