2 nabbed for stealing cash

CHANDIGARH, Sept 25 — The police today arrested two persons who had stolen Rs 54,000 from a car parked outside a restaurant in Sector 17 here this afternoon. A scooter dealer was robbed of Rs 1 lakh on Madhya Marg last night.

According to police sources, Mr Harbans Singh of Phase 3-B-2, SAS Nagar, was having breakfast with his friends in a restaurant when his car (DL-3C-A-3193) was broken into by four persons. The accused took away three briefcases, which contained Rs 54,000, some important documents and other items.

The foursome were spotted by somebody, who raised the alarm. The police was informed and two of them were nabbed after a chase. The other two managed to get away.

Those arrested are Kerala residents Raj Kumar and Sham Kumar. The police is on the lookout for Suresh and another unknown person. Only Rs 10,000 has been recovered. A case under Section 379, IPC, has been registered at the Central Police Station.

One arrested: The police arrested Habib Haider of Panchkula for stealing a sitar and a casio from Vinod Puri. A case has been registered under Sections 379\411 of the IPC at the Mani Majra police station.

Liquor seized: The police arrested Subash Chander of Kurukshetra from near a bus stop on the Ambala road and recovered 350 pouches of liquor from him. A case under Section 61-1-14 of the Excise Act has been registered at the Industrial Area police station.

Assaulted: Mr Manmohan Singh of Sector 7 reported to the police that he was assaulted and threatened by Amolak Singh, Yadwinder, Pahwa and others. He has been admitted to the General Hospital. A case under Sections 147\149\323\506 of the IPC has been registered at the North police station.

Case against Haryana official: The police registered a case against Baljit Singh, Deputy Director, Food and Supplies Department, Haryana, for demanding a bribe of Rs 50,000 from Mr Dharam Singh Mann, DFSO, for posting him to a place of his choice. A case was registered following a report of Mr Avtar Singh, DSP, State Vigilance Bureau. A case under Section 7 and 13 (1) (A) of the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered at the Central Police Station.

Scooter stolen: Mr Subash Chander of Sector 21 reported to the police that his scooter (CH-OI-U-2509) was stolen from the Sector 17 parking. A case under Section 379 of the IPC has been registered at the Central police station.

14 held: As many as 14 persons were arrested for committing various offences. Seven persons were held under preventive action. Six persons were arrested for roaming under suspicious circumstances. One person was caught for creating a nuisance while under the influence of liquor.

PSEB material stolen: Thieves had broken into the yard of the Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB) in Phase VII, Industrial Area, and decamped with aluminum conductors worth Rs 90,000 on the night of September 9. The police has registered a case under Sections 380 and 457 of the IPC on the basis of a complaint lodged by an Executive Engineer of the board.

Booked: The Sohana police booked Varinderjit Singh, who was running private practice as a doctor on the basis of a fake degree. He has been booked under Section 15 of the Medical Council Act, 1956. The case has been registered on the basis of a complaint lodged by the Civil Surgeon, Ropar.Back

Vegetables become cheaper

CHANDIGARH, Sept 25 — A number of commonly used vegetables have become cheaper in the local market during the past week.

During a survey of the market it was found that if a kg of tomato, priced at Rs 12 last week, could be purchased today for Rs 8. The wholesale price of the vegetable has come down from Rs 50 to Rs 30 per 5 kg. According to shopkeepers the price has dipped mainly due to more arrivals in the market from Himachal Pradesh.

Similarly, the price of cauliflower and cabbage has come down during this period. A kg of cauliflower, which could be had for Rs 24 a kg in retail and for Rs 100 per 5 kg in the wholesale market just a few days back, could be purchased today for Rs 18 in retail and for Rs 70 per 5 kg in the wholesale market. In the case of cabbage, the price has come down from Rs 12 to Rs 10 in retail and for Rs 50 to Rs 40 per 5 kg in the wholesale market as a result of more arrivals from Himachal and Punjab.

Lady's finger also witnessed a downward trend in its price during this period. A kg of the vegetable, priced between Rs 14-15 a kg last week, could be purchased today for Rs 12. The wholesale price has come down from Rs 60 to Rs 50 per 5 kg. Similarly, the price of cucumber has come down from Rs 12 to Rs 10 a kg in retail and from Rs 50 to Rs 35 per 5 kg in the wholesale market.

The price of ginger has also come down during this period. A kg of the vegetable, which could be purchased for Rs 40 in retail and for Rs 170 per 5 kg in the wholesale market has come down to Rs 30 a kg and Rs 120 per 5 kg.

There was no change in the price of some vegetables. A kg of gourd was still available for Rs 10 a kg in retail and for Rs 40 per 5 kg. The same was the case with capsicum as it was available for Rs 28 a kg in retail and for Rs 130 per 5 kg in the wholesale market.Back



 


SPS teams enter semis

CHANDIGARH, Sept 25 — The A and B teams of Sanjay public school entered the last four stage of the Chandigarh junior football league for under-19, being played at the Football Stadium, Sector 17, here today.

In the first match, SD Public School, Sector 32, blanked Jawahar Navodayalaya, sector 25, 10-0. The half time score read 6-0. The main scorers were kuljeet, Sartaj, Satinder and Tarjinder.

In another match, SPS-44 (B) brushed aside the challenge of Liberty club by winning 3-0. Vinay scored a hat-trick.

In yet another match, SPS-44 (A) ousted OCF-29, 3-0. The main scorers were Manoj Rawat, Pardep Thapa and Kalarjit.

The last team to reach the semi-finals was DAV senior secondary school, sector 8, when they got the better of St xavier's school, sector 44, 1-0. Ravinder was instrumental in scoring the goal.

Tomorrow the first semi-final will be played between SPS-B and SD Public School. This will be followed by the semi-final between SPS-A and DAV senior Secondary school.

DAV-8 win: DAV senior Secondary school, sector 8, scored a 167 runs victory over Stepping Stone School in the UT inter-school cricket tournament, being played at the Cricket Stadium, Sector 16.

Brief scores: DAV-8- 248 for one in 25 overs (Manav Asopa 112 n.o., Nitin Bhutani 75); Stepping stone- 81 all out (Sarpreet 26, Prabhbir 4 for 10, Rajat 3 for 4).

In another match, Sanjay Public School, Sector 44, defeated Bhavan Vidyalaya, Sector 27, by 88 runs.

Brief scores: SPS-44- 160 for 7 in 25 overs (Amit 52 n.o., Gursewak 26, Manoj 17, Saurabh 4 for 28); Bhavan Vidyalaya- 72 all out (Aditya 22, Sarvesh 18, Vijay Malik 3 for 8, Ravi 3 for 12, Sanjeev 2 for 9).

Shishu Niketan win: In the second CBSE kho-kho tournament, organised by the Central Board of Secondary Education at shishu Niketan school, Sector 22, the host school got the better of St soldier International school, sector 28, by one turn and seven points.

Earlier, the tournament was inaugurated by Mr Y.P. katyal, Regional director, CBSE.

In other boys' matches, SD Public school, sector 32, defeated SG Harkishan Public School, Sector 40, by one turn and ten points and SG Harkishan Public school, Sector 38, ousted MRA Secondary School, sector 27 by one turn and six points. DAV Public School, Bilaspur (HP), beat Air Force Regional School 12 wing by one point and DAV Public school, Bilaspur, beat Eicher school, Parwanoo, by one turn and one point.

In girls, SSI School, sector 28, beat Air Force School 12 wing by one point and SG Harkishan Public school, sector 38, whipped Laureate Public school, Shimla, by 17 points. Sacred heart school, sector 26, beat SGH School, sector 40, by seven points and IS dev Samaj Senior Secondary school, sector 21, defeated Sacred heart School, sector 26, by twelve points.

ICSE events: The ICSE schools, Chandigarh region tournament (upto class X) in basketball for boys and girls and football for boys will be held from October 3 to 8 at YPS, SAS Nagar. Entries close on september 28.

The carrom events for boys and girls and hockey for boys will be held at St Stephen's school, sector 45, from October 9 to 11. Entries close on October 2.

Panchkula beat Chandigarh: Panchkula district, led by skipper Narender Walia, who scored 51 unbeaten runs in 47 balls, defeated Chandigarh by six wickets in the opening match of the Haryana inter-district cricket (under-19) tournament, being played at the Gursagar grounds.

Chandigarh won the toss and elected to bat.They were all out for 131 runs in 33.4 overs, with Gaurav sood claiming three wickets for 28 runs. Panchkula achieved the target in the 30th over with six wickets in hand. Panchkula will play their next match at Karnal on September 27.

Brief scores: Chandigarh- 131 all out (Mandeep sodhi 23, Anurag Chopra 18, gaurav Sood 3 for 28, Aman verma 2 for 21, deepak Lahotia 2 for 14); Panchkula- 133 for 4 in 29.4 overs (Narender Walia 51 n.o., Umesh 19, Ayodhya Prashad 3 for 22).

NPS, YPS win: New Public School, sector 18, DAV Senior Secondary Secondary school, sector 8, Government Model Senior Secondary School, sector 33, and YPS, SAS Nagar, secured semi-final berths in the first Amarnath memorial basketball tournament, being played at Government Model high school, sector 26.

NPS-18 got the better of MRA-27 at 40-23 (half-time score 10-2) and YPS defeated GNPS-36 at 38-27 (half-time score 21-3). GMHS-26 beat MRA-27 at 33-13 (half-time score 17-5) and GMSSS-33 defeated SPS-41 by 32-25 (half-time score 17-13). In the last match of the day, DAV-8 blasted NPS-18 by 42-21 (half-time score 32-3).

TT championship: The Chandigarh state table tennis tournament in various age groups — cadet, sub-junior, junior and senior — for boys and girls will begin at the sector 23 TT hall here tomorrow. The annual state championship will have individual and team events.

MMS lift title: Manav Mangal school, sector 21, bagged the table tennis title in the UT inter-school boys' (under-14) tournament, being organised by the education department, UT.

In the final, MMS thwarted the efforts of Bhavan Vidyalaya school, sector 21, by 2-0. Amit beat Ravi sharma 10-21, 21-17, 22-20 and Aditya Puri beat Tarun 21-9, 21-10.

Earlier, in the semi-finals, MMS beat DAV public school, sector 8, and BV-27 defeated AKS International Public school, sector 41.

In the under-17 section, Manav Mangal school entered the semi-finals by defeating St Stephen's school, sector 45, 2-0.

Chetan wins: Chetan and Harkiran Singh bagged the first position in 5,000 m in the under-14 and under-19 categories, respectively, in the UT schools skating tournament, being played at the skating Rink, sector 10. Gursagar singh won rink race II in under-14 boys section.

GMSSS, Sector 40, won the under-19 roller hockey championship by getting the better of GMSSS, Sector 10, 8-1 in the final.

In under-14 boys roller hockey, Stepping stone School and St Stephen's school, sector 45, will clash in the final.
