Sec 55 resident booked for cheating

CHANDIGARH, Sept 28 —The police has booked a Sector 55 resident for allegedly duping a Ropar resident to the tune of Rs 35000 on the pretext of sending the latter's son abroad.

According to the police, Mr Nazar Singh, a resident of Juzhar Nagar in Ropar, complained that he had been cheated by one Subham Sharma, a resident of Sector 55, here. Subham Sharma allegedly took Rs 35000 for sending son of Mr Nazar Singh abroad and did not return the money and the passport. A case under Section 420 of the IPC has been registered.

Cheating case
The police has registered a case against INCAN Mutual Fund, based at Mani majra for allegedly cheating Davinder Singh, a resident of Sector 34- D to the tune of Rs 1,13, 713 lakh. A case under Sections 420, 406 and 120-B has been registered.

Arrested
Tanuj, a resident of Sector 15, was arrested by the police for hitting Gagandeep, a cyclist, and his brother with his scooter near the Sector 18 church. a case has been registered.

15 held
As many as 15 persons were arrested by the police from different parts of the city for not supplying information about their tenants to the police. Similarly, two persons were arrested for indulging in a brawl and one Avtar singh, a resident of Daddu Majra Colony, for allegedly stealing wood.four persons were arrested under the preventive act, while three persons were arrested while roaming under mysterious circumstances in different parts of the city.

5 booked
The police had booked five persons, not four, as reported in these columns on Monday, for allegedly cheating Mr J. S. Pabla, a Sector 61 resident, to the tune of Rs 3 lakh and cheques worth Rs 6 lakh.

According to the police, Jarnail Singh and Gurdeep Singh, both residents of Sector 42, S.K. Garg, Praveen Kumar and C. S. Arora allegedly deceived Mr Pabla for giving him a Punjabi film for distribution. A case under sections 379\406\420\467\468\471\474 and 120-B of the IPC has been registered at the Sector 36 police station.

PANCHKULA

Two killed
Two cyclists, Sukhpal and Jaswant Singh, residents of Ramgarh, died on the spot after a truck, HR-37-7852, driven by Karam Chand, knocked them down near Mogi Nand. While the truck has been impounded, the driver fled from the scene. A case under Section 279, 304 of the IPC has been registered.

Hurt
Rajbir Sharma, a resident of Chandigarh, was injured at the intersection of sectors 5, 8 and 9, after being hit by a bus, HNE 384. A case of rash and negligent driving has been registered against the driver, Ramesh Chand. The bus has been impounded and the driver arrested. a case under Section 279, 337 of the IPC has been registered.

Case registered
Guru Dutt Batra, a resident of Sector 10, has registered a complaint with the police that a driver of the car, HR-03 B 9754, hit him while he was out for a walk. A case under Section 279 and 337 of the IPC has been registered.

Injured
A scooterist escaped with minor injuries after he was hit by a truck, PB 27-6299, near the old SDM court in Sector 12 A. The truck has been impounded while the driver fled from the scene. a case has been registered.

Murder case
In connection with the murder of a labourer, whose body with a severed head was found lying in an isolated corner of a government nuresry in Phase 1 here on September 1, the local police is planning to write to police stations in the neighboring states.

The Superintendent of Police, Mr B.S. Randhawa, today said as the identity of the victim had not be ascertained so far, a photograph of the victim would be sent to all police stations in the neighbouring states.

Fruit prices stable

CHANDIGARH, Sept 28 — There has been no change in the price of fruits in the local market during the past one week.

During a survey of city markets it was found that though arrivals of different fruit were brightening up the prices were not coming down accordingly. A kg of 'Kinnaur' variety of apple, was available at its old price of Rs 40 in the retail market, while it could be purchased in the wholesale market for Rs 300 per 17-kg pack.

The golden variety of the fruit coming from Kinnaur had become costly as its price had increased from Rs 20-25 per kg to Rs 35-40 per kg in retail and from Rs 300 to Rs 350 per 17-kg pack in the wholesale market. There was, however, no change in the price of the common Shimla golden as it could still be purchased for Rs 20-25 a kg.

Pomegrante, as usual, was priced at Rs 50 a kg in retail and for Rs 120 per 3-kg pack in the wholesale market. Similarly, a kg of 'cheeku' could be had for Rs 40 in retail and for Rs 200 per 8-kg pack in the wholesale market. One could also purchase guava at its old price of Rs 20 a kg in retail and for Rs 15 a kg in the wholesale market.

The same was the case with grapes as the fruit could be purchased for Rs 80 a kg in retail and for Rs 150 per 2.5 kg in the wholesale market. Banana was a bit cheaper today as it could be purchased today for Rs 15 a dozen as compared to Rs 20 a dozen last week. The wholesale price of the fruit has come down from Rs 130 to Rs 100 per 100 pieces.

Papaya could still be purchased for Rs 20 a kg in retail and for Rs 15 a kg in the wholesale market. Similarly, if one could purchase mausambi for Rs 40 a dozen in retail and for Rs 110 per three dozen in wholesale market, orange could be had for Rs 60 a dozen in retail and for Rs 400 per 11 dozen in the wholesale market.

Men's TT crown for AG (Haryana)

CHANDIGARH, Sept 28 — The reigning champion AG Audit (Haryana) bagged the men's team crown while Coaching Centre clinched the women's team title and both won all three league matches played in the 12th Chandigarh Table Tennis Championship here at the Sector 23 table tennis hall today.

In the sub-junior boys' section, Sajal Kaushal, Aditya Puri, Mandeep Singh and Amit Kumar entered the last eight of the singles event.

In the sub-junior girls' section, Nadia Saini, Taranpreet, Arshdeep and Ramanpreet Kaur reached the last eight of the event.

In the men's team championship, AG Audit (Haryana) team was given a tough fight by SGGS College, Sector 26, before the former could win the match lasting five sets. The AG team won, 3-2.

In the first singles, Harish Kumar disappointed its team when he lost to Anoop KC, 21-18, 19-21, 19-21. SGGS led 1-0 at this point. Then, Amod dixit defeated Mandeep Walia, 9-21, 21-16, 21-15 and equalised the tie 1-1.

In the third singles, the AG man Patanjali Kumar went down fighting to Gaurav Bhatia, 18-21, 20-22. Then Amod Dixit equalised the tie again by defeating Anoop KC in three games, 21-18, 23-25, 21-16. Finally, Harish Kumar won the decider by beating Mandeep Walia, 21-16, 21-19. Amod Dixit was the star of these matches.

In the second league tie, PEC (A) team beat Coaching Centre, 3-0. (Tarun Akku b Sunil Bhamboo, 19-21, 21-18, 21-12; Puneet Khurana b Harpreet 21-17, 16-21, 21-17; Vivek Jain b Tarun Kinger, 21-13, 21-15.

In another league ties, the AG team beat PEC, 3-2, and Coaching Centre, 3-0.

Gaurav shines

A superb batting by Gaurav who scored 44 runs off 38 balls helped Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 37, beat St Stephen's School by three wickets in the Chandigarh Inter-School Cricket Tournament being played at Cricket Stadium in Sector 16.

Brief scores: St Stephen's-45 — 127 all out in 25 overs (Sachin Preet Singh 21, M. Dass 20, Sunny Behl 16); GMSSS-37 — 128 for seven in 24 overs (Gaurav 44, Anupam 28, sunny 3 for 14).

Ball badminton

SD Club, Sector 32, and Shivalik Club-41 won their respective matches in the Semi-final Boys League on the third day of the Chandigarh Ball Badminton Championship being organised here at Shivalik Public School, Sector 41.

In the girls' section, Flankers Club and Chandigarh Ball Badminton Academy also won their league matches.

Hockey tourney

Shri Guru Gobind Singh Senior Secondary School, Sector 35, blanked out Government Model High School, Sector 44, 4-0, in the girls Pre-Nehru-Hockey Tournament being played here at the Sector 18 stadium.

In the boys' (under-15) final, Shivalik Public School, Sector 41, defeated SGGSSS-35, 2-0. In the under-17 section, SPS-41 again defeated SGGSSS-35, 2-1.

Rink races

Kriti Puri of Carmel Convent School, Sector 9, won rink races in 300 m and 1,500 m events in the under-14 girls' section of the UT Skating Championship for schools here at Bhawan Vidyalya in Sector 27.

In the first rink race (300 m), the second position went to Gurleen Kaur of St Stephen's School, Sector 45, while Renuka Sharma of Bhawan Vidyalaya, Sector 27 finished third. In the second rink race (1,500 m), Mehak of KB DAV School secured the second place and the third position went to KB DAV Secondary School, Sector 7.

SAF observer

Mr Vijay Pal Singh, Secretary of the Chandigarh Volleyball Association, and Vice-President of the Volleyball Federation of India has been made Observer in the ongoing SAF Games in Kathmandu (Nepal) by the Volleyball Federation of India.

City pool

Naman, Atul, Ricky and Pramod have entered the last eight of the juniors' section in the first Chandigarh Pool Tournament for junior and seniors being played at Bambi's Shot Pot, Sector 37, today.

Pramod Kumar defeated Tushar Ahuja, 3-2. In another match, 12-year-old Naman Nagpal upset Ankur Nanda by beating him, 3-1.

In another match, Ricky Singh proved too good for Eroz Verma and won, 3-0. Another upset was witnessed in the fourth match of the day when Ravind Gosai lost to Atul Sareen, 2-3.

In the seniors' section, N.S. Chima defeated Sanjeev Bhardwaj in a one-sided affair, 4-0. Romy Sekhon had to struggle to beat Beharjet Singh in a close finish, 4-3.

In another match of the day for seniors, Gurvinder Singh beat Kamal Kant, 4-2, while Manav Dhawan beat Ashish Tuli, 4-2.

TT quarterfinals

Manav Mangal School, Sector 21, defeated Moti Ram Arya School, Sector 27, 2-0 to sail into the under-14 girls' section's semi-final of the Chandigarh Schools Table Tennis Tournament being played here at New Public School, Sector 18 today.

Results: Arshdeep b Varsha, 21-7, 21-4; Anchal b Nancy, 21-4, 21-7.

In tomorrow's semi-final, Manav Mangal will play against GMHS-37, while Bhawan Vidyalya, Sector 27, will clash with GMHS-38 in another semi-final.

Sport tourney begins

CHANDIGARH, Sept 28 — The All-India Mahatma Hansraj Aryan Tournament in 14 disciplines began here today at DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, amidst chanting of Ved mantras.

The chief guest, Pandit Mohan Lal, Secretary of the Arya Vidya Sabha of New Delhi and Adviser to the DAV Managing Committee stressed the need for paying homage to mother earth. He also highlighted the concept that a healthy mind resided in a healthy body.

Mr Ravinder Talwar, Principal of the host school, presented the vote of thanks. Later, participating players drawn from eleven schools took out a march past. 'Vande Mataram' was sung and other cultural items were presented by students of different schools.

The following are the results of the matches played: Badminton — DAV-8 b Sain Dass Jalandhar, 2-0 (Akash Singh b Vivek, 15-2, 15-1; Manish Kapor b Gurpreet, 15-2, 15-3); basketball — DAV-Amritsar b CN Kurali 80-49 (halftime 40-26); DAV-8 b AS Ambala 72-38.

Cricket: DAV-8 b DAV-Amritsar by seven wickets; handball — DAV -8 b AS Ambala 26-3.
