Police post attacked; cop shot at

SRINAGAR, Jan 10 (PTI) — Militants attacked a police post and shot at a police officer in separate incidents in Jammu and Kashmir since last evening, an official spokesman said here today.

Heavily armed militants attacked a police post in the Bonkote-Banihal area on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway last evening, the spokesman said, adding that the policemen retaliated, forcing the attackers to flee.

Nobody was injured in the shootout.

In a separate incident, militants shot at and critically wounded police Inspector Farhat Geelani at Kathi Darwaza in downtown Srinagar when the victim was coming out of a mosque after offering evening prayers on Id.

Geelani was critically wounded but was stated to be “out of danger”.

A civilian, Farooq Ahmed Sofi, was shot at by militants at in his in-laws’ place at Laramganjipora in Anantnag district last evening. He has been hospitalised.

Security forces raided militant hideouts in Srinagar and Anantnag and seized a pistol and one of its magazine, two rounds and one magazine and 16 rounds of AK rifles.

JAMMU: Militants shot dead a father and son at Sheedra village of Rajouri district on Sunday evening, the police said on Monday.

Five armed ultras barged into the house of Mohammad Misri and shot him dead at point-blank range. They later ransacked the house and killed Misri’s son, Mohammad Lateef.

In another incident, Army troops seized 688 rounds of AK and sniper rifles, 25 rounds of pistol, three crude bombs and six battery chargers from the Gallan area in Sunderbani tehsil of the district yesterday.
