Delhi University have emerged as the top university in sports among 281 universities under the banner of Association of Indian Universities (AIU) to lift the coveted Dr B.L.Gupta Trophy for all-round performance in the All-India Inter-University Sports Meet 2000-2001.
The Dr B.L.Gupta Trophy is awarded to the university which secure the highest number of points in sports.
At a function organised at the Kurukshetra University, the Association of Indian Universities president V.K. Patil awarded the prestigious trophy to officials from the Sports Department of Delhi University, including Dr (Mrs) Sudershan Pathak, Deputy Director of Physical Education.
Delhi University have a long and proud tradition in sports and games and have always made their distinctive imprint in Inter-University competitions. Delhi University regained the B.L.Gupta Trophy by logging the highest number of 9280 points. Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU), Amritsar and Punjab University, Chandigarh finished second and third respectively by collecting 6645 and 4965 points.
During the 2000-2001 academic year, 51 Delhi University teams (both men and women) participated in Inter-University competitions. Delhi University won six All-India Inter-University Championships in badminton (men), squash (men), air pistol (men), archery (men), archery (FITA Round, women) and korfball (men and women).
Delhi University were runners-up in cricket (men), table tennis (women), kabaddi (men), handball (men) and air pistol (women). They got third position in softball for women.
Guru Nanak Dev University won five titles in hockey (men), cross country (men), football (women), handball (men and women), basketball (women), judo (men and women) and third places in kabaddi, tennis and gymnastics (all women).
Punjab University finished as runners-up in softball (women) and cycling (men) and secured third position in handball, badminton, volleyball, hockey, wrestling, softball (all men) and tennis, cross country and rowing (all women).
