New Delhi, July 19
The Rotary International’s (RI) India chapter has launched a war against illiteracy. A part of their ‘crusade against illiteracy’ is the plan to adopt Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and New Delhi Municipal Council primary schools.
Addressing the media here today, the District Governor of RI, who represents the National Capital Region, Mr Virendra Jain, said the plan was to provide essentials like blackboards, sanitation and water facilities to these NDMC and MCD-run schools.
Mr Jain expressed hope that all 86 clubs in the district would join force to help them in their crusade against illiteracy. He pointed out that there were 5,000 Rotarians and if each one were to teach at least two persons there would be at least 10,000 literate people by the end of the target period 2003.
He added that these people would be taught and not just made literate so that they could sign their names. Mr Jain also pointed out that apart from adopting schools and running literacy campaigns, Rotary planned to conduct a survey among the schools of Delhi to find out their infrastructural requirements.
The Chief Minister, Ms Sheila Dikshit, is expected to inaugurate the seminar, ‘Gyan Yagna’, scheduled to be held in the Capital tomorrow. Eminent educationists will address the seminar, which is a part of the crusade against illiteracy.
