Breast-feeding week

The District Health Department is observing breast-feeding week from August 1-7, 2002. The week was inaugurated by the Civil Surgeon, Dr J.S. Bhullar, at Devki Devi Jain College on August 1.

According to a press release, the doctors enumerated the benefits of breast-feeding for the child, mother and the community. The experts said that breast-feeding provided all nutrients for physical and mental development of the child, confers a healthy immune system, prevents infections caused by artificial feeding bottles and helped in producing of antibodies.

AIDS patient dies

A 39-year-old patient died of AIDS at the Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) here today. The, doctors, while confirming the death, said the patient was admitted to the hospital in a serious condition a few days back but refused to give any further details.

PBA hails winners

Mr Rajdeep Singh Gill, ADGP and president, Punjab Basketball Association (PBA), has hailed the Punjab players who have won medals in the Commonwealth Games at Manchester.

According to a press note issued here today by Mr Teja Singh Dhaliwal, general secretary, PBA, Mr Gill and the members of the association have congratulated all the medal winners in the games.

The players are: Abhinav Bindra (shooting), Palwinder Cheema (wrestling), Bhupinder Singh (judo), Vicky Batta (weightlifting) and Amandeep Kaur, member of the Indian hockey team which bagged the gold to win their maiden title in the Commonwealth Games.

Mr Gill also urged the Punjab Government and the Punjab Olympic Association to honour these winners in a befitting manner, the note said.
