Madhu of MCD Public School, Shahdara and Sandeep of GSS School, Ranjit Nagar emerged victorious in the girls and boys races respectively in the 11 to 14 years age group, in the ninth NSCI-Rajiv Gandhi Marathon Run for school-going children from the slum and jhuggi-jhonpri clusters in Delhi, held in the Capital on Sunday.
NSCI president Subhash Chopra flagged off the races from the Ferozeshah Kotla ground at 9.30 am on Sunday. The girls races were held first, followed by the boys races at 11.30 am. All the races culminated at the NSCI lawns on Mathura Road.
Over 15,000 school children participated in the races. In the senior girls section, Madhu warded off intense competition from a packed field to hit the tape first. The fifth class student ran a tactical race to pip Janika to the post. Janika of Sarvodaya Vidyalaya, Ranjit Nagar, a sixth class student, finished a close second while Nitu, a seventh class student from NP Co-Educational School, Tilak Marg, took the third place.
In the junior girls
section (6 to 10 years age group) Kunti of MCD School, Mandavali raced to the first position. The class three student ran a fast race to leave behind her own schoolmate Sahiva and Pratibha of MCD School, Dakshinpuri, at the second and third position respectively.
In the senior boys event (11 to 14 years age group), Sandeep, a tenth class student of Ranjit Nagar, left behind Manoj of Nathupura and Sandeep of S V New Police Lines, to finish first. The other two followed at the second and third position respectively.
In the junior boys section (6 to 10 years), Hemant Kumar of NPL Camp, a fifth class student, raced to the top spot, followed by Uttam of GS Karawal Nagar and Sadul of MCD, Shakurpur.
Elaborate security arrangements and vigilant watch by the volunteers posted by the NSCI prevented intruders from sneaking in mid-way through the races. There was no cheating by the participants either, as every boy and girl strived to complete the race.
Rs 80,000 worth cash prizes were distributed to the winners. In all, 400 best runners were given cash scholarships. The first five runners in each age group were given cash prizes of Rs 1000 each while the next best five runners were given cash prizes of Rs 500 each. The next best ten runners were given Rs 250 each and the next best 75 runners were given Rs 100 each.
The first 25 finishers in each age group will also be given a monthly scholarship of Rs 100 each, till they complete their higher secondary education.
The NSCI has so far distributed Rs 24,09,180 as scholarships during the past eight years. Presently, 432 school children are receiving monthly scholarships from the NSCI-Rajiv Gandhi Marathon Run organising committee.
