THE American Soybean Association (ASA), a non-profit organisation, dedicated to global promotion and expansion for the market for soya, recently organised an event at Hotel Inter Continental in the Capital to create awareness about the health benefits of soya. The Association has been working closely with various co-operative associations as soyabean processors, distributors and soya food manufacturers. A CD-Rom presentation highlighted the use and importance of soya consumption. The presentation incorporated the views of Dr S.C. Manchanda, Professor and Head of the Cardiology department at AIIMS, Delhi, Professor Tara Gopaldas, Director Tara Consultancy, Bangalore and other medical experts. Soya dishes as almond milk, soya moong dal halwa, shabmani pulao, tofu green and chicken with soya nuggets were also served during the event.
Dr Suresh Itapu, Technical Director, ASA, said that soya must be added in the Indian vegetarian diet. “Since the Indian population is predominantly vegetarian, it becomes all the more important for them to take a diet rich in protein. Soya contains 35 to 40 per cent protein compared to 20 to 30 per cent available in other legumes and can easily met the protein requirement of a vegetarian diet. Research has proved that Soya can control and prevent diseases like cancer, diabetes, heart attack and osteoporosis.
Mr Virgil Miedema, Regional Director, ASA, said that despite the obvious benefits of Soya, there is lack of awareness or understanding among South Asian countries about the availability of different soya products in the market or its benefits. “A health claim issued by the US food and Drug Administration certifies that consumption of 25 grms of soya protein per day with a diet low in saturated fatty acids may reduce the risk of heart diseases by reducing cholestrol.”

surgeryIndraprastha Apollo Hospital organised a symposium on the latest advancements in replacement and arthroscopic surgery techniques of shoulder and elbow joints here on Wednesday. The workshop focussed on issues as recurring dislocation of the joint, impingement syndrome, rotator cuff tear, frozen shoulder and sports injuries. The symposium was organised by Dr Raju Vaishya, Senior Consultant, Orthopaedic Surgery, Indraprastha Apollo Hospital and was addressed by internationally renowned shoulder surgeon,
Prof Simon Frostick of University of Liverpool (UK). Prof Frostick explained the surgical techniques through live demonstrations to over 200 surgeons from all over the country. He explained the intricacies of arthroscopy (keyhole surgery) and arthroplasty (total joint replacement) of the shoulder and the elbow. Arthroscopy of the shoulder is immensely beneficial in cases involving recurrent dislocation, rotator cuff tear (especially common in the elderly) and periathritis (stiffness of the joint). Arthroscopy of the elbow helps in cases involving inflammation of the elbow joint, undiagnosed pain and swelling and sports injuries. Speaking at the workshop, Dr Vaishya said, “In the recent past, there has been a gradual upsurge in the number of complications of the upper limb joints where surgical intervention is necessary. Till now, the surgical expertise and requisite infrastructure was limited to US and countries in Europe, but now it is available at select centres in the country.
