Ranga's Toon Tales

Muhammad Ali

THE former world heavy weight champion Muhammad Ali, earlier known as Cassius Clay, was in Delhi along with his wife Veronica (now divorced). They stayed at a five-star hotel in the Capital. When I came to know of his arrival, I made up my mind to meet him so that I could sketch him. He was relaxing in the lounge of the hotel when I spotted him. I had finished his drawing before I could approach him for his autograph.

His wife, who was sitting by his side, was the first to see the sketch. She allowed me to meet Ali. He was happy to see that I had drawn him in boxing action and not in his lounge suit. He willingly signed it and shook hands with me. He held my hand so firmly that I had to take complete rest for a few days till the pain in my hand subsided. It was, indeed, a ‘great’ handshake, which I have still not forgotten.
