The apex school sports body in the country, the School Games Federation of India, headed by Mr Satpal, got a shot in the arm when one of the key sports organisers and the Secretary-General of the Chandigarh Olympic Association, Mr Ravinder Talwar, decided to join it. Stating this, Mr PS Chhabra, Secretary-General of the SGFI, said in February last, a parallel body was formed where Mr Talwar was nominated vice-president of the federation. But after observing for three months the activities of the parallel body, Mr Talwar agreed to be nominated as the vice-president of the SGFI, Mr Chhabra said.
When asked about the meeting conducted by the parallel body in Pune on May 24, Mr Chhabra said out of 36 affiliated units of the SGFI, only six units were present at the meeting. He said for any player to be eligible for the sports gradation, as per the constitution of the SGFI, 10 teams’ participation was mandatory.
Mr Chhabra has also written a letter to the various affiliated units talking the members that the May 24 meeting held by the group, headed by Mr Anil of Maharashtra, was illegal as already the matter was pending before the Punjab and Haryana High Court and would come up for the next hearing on September 9, 2004.
When asked how Mr Prem Puri, Assistant Education Officer, UT, was holding dual posts in both the federations, as vice-president in the SGFI (Mr Satpal) and as Treasurer in the SGFI (Mr Anil) , Mr Chhabra said the issue would be taken up in their general body meeting to be held in Delhi on July 1.
Mr Prem Puri and Mr D.S. Mangat, DPI (Schools), UT, also attended the May 24 meeting in Pune. Mr Mangat was also nominated Chairman, Selection Committee of the parellel body. The UT school sportspersons did not take part in the just-concluded 49th edition of the National School Games held from May 12 to 15 held at Kozhikode, thus depriving the deserving school sportspersons of a valuable chance.
