Bank asked to compensate customer
Noida, March 4 Rajender Kumar of Sector-12 Noida was an account holder of HDFC Bank, Sector-18, Noida with a balance of Rs 25,673 in his account. He had deposited another Rs 10,000 into his account. After sometime, the complainant had issued a cheque for Rs 30,000, which the bank had returned for “insufficient funds” in the account. When he checked his balance, Rajinder Kumar was surprised to find his full balance was intact, including Rs 10,000 deposited last. It showed a deduction of Rs 200 only on account of penalty for insufficient balance in his account at the time the cheque was presented. Complainant filed a complaint before the Consumer Forum pleading for a penalty of Rs 10,000 and Rs 5,000 as a compensation for mental torture and financial loss. After hearing the arguments of both the parties, the forum decided that the service and treatment meted out to the complainant was inadequate and unprofessional. Therefore, the forum ordered the bank to pay Rs 4,000 to the complainant. If the penalty is not paid within one month, the amount will attract six per cent interest, the forum ordered. |
Venezuelan Prez finds common tune with JNU students
New Delhi, March 4 At a special lecture in the University, the audience was taken by surprise when Mr Frias sang in his native language a song penned by a Venezuelan singer in praise of the students. The song describes the students as the flavour of the bread that the poor eat. Calling for better relations between the two countries, Mr Frias in his lecture on ‘The Challenges of Development in Latin America’ said, “We want to supply oil to India. We know India needs oil for future development and we will tomorrow sign an agreement in the oil sector.” He added, “we have come here without science and technology and we want India to come to Venezuela and take the oil from us. We want to help India to increase their production of oil.” Claiming that “from today there begins a great alliance between India and Venezuela,” the visiting dignitary said, “Venezuela has opened it arms to India.” Hailing Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and Simon Bolivar, he drew attention to the need for anti-colonialism, anti-imperialism and anti-capitalism as the need of the hour. To a cheering audience, he slammed the policy of imperialism and capitalism. In his speech, heavily embellished by the quotes of Gandhi, Nehru and Bolivar, Mr Frias recounted the journey of his country from being a land that let go off most of its oil to the North, to the present day when the country is looking forward to a “participatory democracy”. “It is a democracy by the people and with the people,” he said, pointing out that soon it will be a “country free of illiteracy.” The President said, “we have a population of 20 million of which one and a half million are illiterate, and thanks to the Cuban model of ‘Yes I can’, we are going to be a country free of illiteracy.” Addressing the crowds led by the ‘Red Brigade’ that gathered in the stadium and welcomed him in his native tongue, he made a case for unity between the two countries. “If we are united we can be free…I want us to make a commitment of eternal love and unity,” he said. |

On March 3, the KG Annual Day began with the School Choir presenting a prayer, “Vidya Aur Budhi Ka Deydo Vardan” that echoed Dr Chauhan’s sentiments as the children asked for the blessings of the Almighty. DFS cuts power supply to 130 buildings
New Delhi, March 4 This action has been taken after the Delhi High Court order that all buildings constructed on ‘lal dora’ land have to follow fire safety norms adhered to by other building owners. He said that the DFS had identified a total of 2500 buildings, which had failed to install the necessary fire safety norms. Of these 680 were issued notices while the power supply of 130 buildings have been disconnected. He said that not only high-rise buildings but also schools buildings and market complexes have also been inspected and asked to take appropriate steps in this regard. Among the major causes of fire safety hazards identified include unplanned growth of city, encroachments, illegal power connections, non-availability of pressurized water supply, illegal storage activities and use of sub-standard electrical equipment, LPG and CNG cylinders. Besides, inadequate number of fire stations, poor state of fire fighting equipments, lack of research and development and fire investigation facilities in the country were also some of the factors which
have caused delay in fire fighting. |
