Drug addict groom sent without bride
Ludhiana, May 2
A day after a vigilant woman thwarted her husband’s attempt to remarry, a Ludhiana girl refused to marry her bridegroom when she and her family discovered that he was a drug addict. He was visibly under the effect of narcotics during the wedding ceremony here last night.

Gang using human excreta during snatchings
Ludhiana, May 2

“Yuk.... eeeekk........” is the first reaction as one encounters or hears about a gang using human excreta while snatching valuables from unsuspecting victims. The gang carries one or two polythene bags carrying human or animal excreta. The gang members use the foul smelling excreta both for snatching valuables from a victim as well as to save themselves if caught. The gang members usually strike in a group though individual crimes have also come to light. The gang members are mostly minor boys.

SMO’s transfer revoked

With the Senior Medical Officer (SMO) of the Civil Hospital, here, Dr Manjit Kaur, back in the saddle in less than a week’s time, the outburst of the Punjab Health Minister, Mr Ramesh Chand Dogra, over the pathetic condition of the 100-bedded hospital, has virtually turned out to be just a storm in the tea cup.

The thrill of flying as airhostess
Ludhiana, May 2
“When I look down the cockpit and see houses look like miniatures and roads like ribbons, I just adore this scene,” said Ms Mamta Sachdeva, the first airhostess to land up with a job with Etihad Airways. She was a student of the Frank Finn Institute of Air Hostess. She was in the city to express her gratitude to the institute faculty and meet her teachers and friends. She joined Etihad Airways in January and in the past four months had flown to quite a few countries. Mamta is from Moga and little did she know that she would travel to far off places like Munich, London, Riyadh, Behrain, Colombo etc. She is based in Abu-Dabhi and feels life is just a pleasant dream-to-travel, to meet new people, visit new places and then earn in five figures.

3 held for duping car dealer
Ludhiana, May 2
The Kochar market police has arrested three persons who had duped a car dealer in the car bazaar in the local car bazaar, Feroze Gandhi market, by selling him a stolen Tata Safari vehicle. The accused later filed a false FIR with the Gurdaspur police claiming that the vehicle was stolen.

PM urged to take up Denmark-based Sikh student’s case

A socio-academic and cultural organisation here has urged the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to take up the case of Ripudaman Singh, a Sikh student in Denmark, who has been declared guilty of carrying a six-inch kirpan by a local court there.

Badungar flays Haryana AG’s statement

Ms S Verma, Principal, SDP College for Women , Ludhiana, retired on April 30 after putting in more than 36 years of meritorious service. President SDP Sabha (Regd) Mr Balraj K Bhasin, the management and staff of the college were joined by Principals of the other SDP institutions to give her a very warm farewell on the college campus which she had nurtured with dedication, sincerity and hard work.

Lawyers for revamp of chambers’ panel

More than 170 lawyers today sought reformation of the’ lawyers chamber committee’ constituted by the District Bar Association. At least 10 members must be inducted from the 238 applicants for the chambers, so that their interest may be watched properly, demanded the lawyers.

Asthma awareness programme at DMCH today

The chest unit of Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) would hold an asthma awareness programme to observe the ‘World Asthma Day’ here on May 3. Under this programme, aimed at patient welfare, demonstration of various inhalation devices and information regarding management of asthma would be given to the OPD patients through various teaching programmes.

It was a rare opportunity for the orthopaedic surgeons attending the two-day national workshop on hand surgery to see nationally and internationally acclaimed surgeons at work and interact with them at the Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) here. The workshop - ‘IOA Hand Course 2005’, organised by the Indian Orthopedic Association and hosted by the Orthopaedic Department of the DMCH concluded yesterday.

A three-day training course on AIDS, HIV and sexually transmitted diseases (STD) for all doctors posted in government dispensaries and civil hospitals in the district commenced at the training centre in the Civil Surgeon’s office here today.

Punjab athletes excel in meet for blind
Ludhiana, May 2

Hosts Punjab dominated the proceedings on the second day of the 2nd North Zone Athletic Meet for the visually impaired being organised by the Punjab Sports Association for the Blind at Guru Nanak Stadium here today. Punjab athletes reaped a rich haul of 17 medals including nine gold, six siver and two bronze. Mandeep Singh of Punjab gave a good account of himself, bagging three gold medals (200 m, 400 m races and long jump) and made sort of records.
Second day’s results: 200 m ( B-I category for seniors) — Mandeep Singh of Punjab 1, Gurbir Singh of Punjab 2 and Manoj Kumar of Delhi 3; long jump — Mandeep Singh of Punjab 1, Manoj Kuma rof Delhi 2 and Satnam Singh of Haryana 3.

Basketball meet
Ludhiana, May 2
The Beas and the Yamuna Houses came out triumphant in the boys and girls sections, respectively, in the basketball tournament organised at the BCM Senior Secondary School, Urban Estate, here today. Four teams each — Yamuna, Satluj, Beas and Ravi competed in the both the sections.

Last date for filing stock statement extended

The Excise and Taxation Department has extended the last date for filing stock statement for tax paid goods for the purpose of claiming input tax credit from April 30 to May 15.
