Injury no deterrent for this player
Chandigarh, October 6 Mrs Swati Natu, a KV teacher, who is escorting the Mumbai team, was all praise for Somali for showing such dedication and devotion for the sport. “Despite my best efforts to dissuade her from continuing with the match, she insisted on playing pleading it was her left arm which got fractured and she is a right-handed player.” Much to the surprise as well as delight of her teammates, escorts, organisers of the games and even rival players, Somali, sixth on the School Games Federation of India rankings, played six matches, out of which she registered victory in four matches. She also helped her team win the bronze medal in team championship. “I came here with the purpose of achieving the top honours. Sometimes I felt pain during the matches but my concentration and dedication helped me overcome it”, said Somali. “Though I could not win gold in the meet, I am satisfied with my performance”, added Somali, who is a fan of tennis sensation Rozer Federer. She praised the arrangements made for the visitors at KV, Sector 47, where her team has been lodging. We all are relishing the good food, especially the Punjabi stuff here”, she said. Somali, who is on her first visit to the city, was impressed not only with the cleanliness and wide roads here but also with the open-hearted people. “I am missing the crowd and traffic jams of Mumbai”, said Somali. |
KVs’ sports meet oozes pan-Indian flavour
Chandigarh, October 6 While these sportskids, drawn from all KVs across the country, vie for top spots in the meet, the mingling of different communities has also brought with it new friendships and bonding of hearts. The meet has also meant a quick run through a handful of most-used words in various languages, picked up during interactions with the participants from other regions. While one learns Dogri, another tries his hand at Assamese and still another dabbles in Malayalam. However, they admit, unanimously that the hearts of all participants have flipped for pure, rustic, unadulterated Punjabi. Ask R.M. Priya from Chennai about her “learning” experience and pat comes the reply,”Tusi kithon aye ho (Where are you from)?” while a giggling Anju from Guwahati asks,”Nindeperinda (What’s your name)?” They are all using the Tau Devi Lal Sports Complex, the venue for various athletic events, as their language lab and are putting their skills to the test. Sapna Chauhan from Jaipur is not to be left behind while others pull out “strange” words from their mind’s closet. She chips in with her Assamese, inquiring, “Khabor kene kua (How are you)?” while Godavari and Lakshmi from Mumbai indicate you to sit down, saying “Eriqueue”. “We are enjoying ourselves to the hilt learning these new words. We try and use them as much as possible with our friends who have taught them to us. It’s great being here in the midst of so many students from all over the country. I didn’t realise it would be so much fun,” says Anjali from the Chennai Region, a first-timer at this event. The languages the participants are picking up at the meet are as different as chalk and cheese. “It is only in between the events that we get time to chat with these new friends from the 18 regions. That’s when we exchange a few words. For the better part of the day, we are only cheering our team mates,” maintains Priya. And, while the races hot up on the field, it’s giving these students memories of a lifetime. It’s a chapter they don’t want to close. |
