Freedom fighters remembered

Independence Day was celebrated with fervour all over the district today. People belonging to all age groups, political parties, educational institutions, government and private departments organised functions to mark the occasion.

Independence Day celebrated at PAU
Ludhiana, August 15
Sixtieth Independence Day was celebrated today at Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana. Vice Chancellor, Dr. K.S.Aulakh, hoisted the National Tricolour at the flag post near College of Agriculture. He also took salute from NCC cadets of the university and inspected the parade. Deans, Directors, Officers, Heads of the Departments and a large number of students were present on this occasion.

Good work done by Ludhiana police in solving the double murder case of a jeweller and his wife has been commended with the case being awarded one of three best detected cases of the state in the last 12 months.

Mystery continues to shroud the cause of death of three minor children whose badly decomposed bodies were recovered from a locked car in a vacant plot in Amarpura Colony here late last night.

Treatment of the infant girl, who had allegedly been left, to be suffocated to death in a plastic bag and thrown on an empty plot of land at Kup Kalan village near here two days ago has been taken up by the civil administration.

Bairagi Maha Mandal, Punjab, today asked the state government to set up a Chair in one of the state universities in the name of Bairagi Baba Banda Singh Bahadur. This step would go a along way in apprising the younger generation of supreme sacrifice made by this valiant warrior.

I-Day fervour at vet varsity
Ludhiana, August 15
Independence day was celebrated at Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana, with great enthusiasm. Mr D.S. Bains, Vice-Chancellor, unfurled the flag and inspected NCC cadets of the College of Veterinary Science. He paid tributes to martyrs.

Independence Day at the Subdivision level was celebrated with fervour at the grain market here today. Mr Arshdeep Singh Thind, SDM, Amloh, unfurled the tricolour and took the salute at a march past presented by NCC cadets and scouts.It was followed by a cultural programme organised by elementary, high and secondary schools of Amloh and Mandi gobindgarh area.

Rally against foeticide
Ludhiana, August 15
Students and staff of Green Land Senior Secondary Public School organised a rally today against foeticide and dowry. The rally was flagged off from by the SSP. Five thousand students, led by the chairman-cum-Director of the school, Mr Rajesh Rudhra. The students carried banners depicting the doom of the country if foeticide goes unabated.

KVM boys storm into final

Bharat Malhotra's unbeaten innings of 71 runs and equally important bowling spells by Keshav (2 for 15) and Lalit Malhotra (2 for 12) steered Kundan Vidya Mandir School, Civil Lines, Ludhiana, to 63-run win over Sargodha National Public School, Field Ganj, in the semifinal of the Punjab Zonal Schools Cricket Tournament (u-19) played at Bachan Singh Academy ground, village Balloke, Haibowal Khurd here today.

Teams of Amritsar and Ludhiana B scored emphatic victories in their respective quarterfinal encounters to grab berths in the semifinals on the penultimate day of the Miri Piri Punjab State Sub Junior Hockey Tournament being played at the Satguru Partap Singh Astro-Turf Stadium, Bhaini Sahib, near here, today.
