Dance is a passion for some and when the options to learn are aplenty, who minds shaking a leg?
Serena Miglani

Work load, hectic schedules, deadlines, responsibilities... when it comes to life, we are as it is used to dancing on its tunes! Be it the whirl or the shimmy or the ecstatic strut, dance is the absolute expression of the human body. So is dance all about technique and synchronisation? "Dance involves exploring our existence," says Jasmeet K. Shan, founder dance facilitator, Dance Dacha, Chandigarh.

The good news is even if you don't have that inborn genius, it is possible to master all sorts of capers, reels, congos and jigs, provided you have fun and enjoy the journey of learning!

Hop & Step

You enter any dance studio and youngsters are all gushing about Hip Hop. "Hip Hop is my favourite as I like the movements and the rhythm, especially the raps," says Nehmat Sandhu (10) student of Strawberry Fields World School, Chandigarh. Hip Hop with its Breaking, Popping, Locking, Bee Boying and free styling is a hit among youngsters in Chandigarh. The jumps, breakages and rotations in the movements are combined in such a way that the dance style becomes informal and explosive. Latin American dancing with Cha-Cha, Jive, Rumba, Samba and Paso Doble add to the whole experience.

Salsa Magic

Salsa is a craze that extends to all the age groups, especially women in their forties, including housewives. "Dance gives me a rapturous feeling and I enjoy it immensely. It's been four months I have been pursuing my passion, which gives me an added advantage of fitness." smiles Vandana Kharbanda, housewife. "Salsa has a social appeal. We facilitate socialisation through Salsa Championships, mega presentation shows and the interactive Chandigarh Salsa Club," says Rajiv Garg, Director, Dance World, Chandigarh.

Bhangra Beat

How can we forget to mention the effervescent Bhangra? Not only is it a power packed workout, but also peps up the social milieu. "Bhangra is all about having fun and romping with those throbbing beats. Be it marriages, social gatherings or festivals, Bhangra always adds a zing," says Parvesh Chandel, student, Panjab University. Club the Bhangra with Bollywood dancing and you are ready to rejoice that party of yours!

Zesty Zumba

Have that almost perfect body and want to tone it up? Just try Zumba. "Zumba encompasses all dance forms and targets different areas of the body. Here at Dance Dacha, we have a special programme called 'Danyog' which is structured in such a way that the fitness, dance amalgamate and the Dachniks have a gala time," says Shan, who claims to have introduced Zumba in Chandigarh.

So, ready to wear your dancing shoes?

Reality byte

Contemporary dance forms are also gaining popularity owing to the rage of the reality shows. Dance reality shows indeed have a lot of influence and parents tend to pressurise their kids at times. "This commercial aspect of dance is hampering the very spirit and is detrimental to the growth of children," says Rajeev, Director, Dance World, Chandigarh.

Odissi dancer Sujata Mohapatra is all set to delight audiences on the opening day of the Pracheen Kala Kendra's Nritya and Sangeet Sammelan
Tanya Malhotra

It's time for a classical journey. The inauguration ceremony of Pracheen Kala Kendra's Nritya and Sangeet Sammelan will witness Tabla-Sreekhol Jugalbandi by distinguished artists Madhusudan Barman and Gopal Barman, better known as the Barman Bandhu, on Wednesday.

Thriving under the guidance of their Guru, Pandit Shankar Ghosh, they are all set to delight the audience with Satnam Goswami on Nagma/Harmonium. The Madhu-Gopal Duet will present this delightfully unique concept of jugalbandi, which is a true example with ingenious fusion.

This will be followed by Odissi dance performance by Bhubaneswar-based artist Sujata Mohapatra and her troupe. This charming yet humble perfectionist has invigorated many a soul. Defining her dance form as ecstatic, she says, "Among the eight styles of classical forms, Odissi is one of the oldest and the most celebrated. Various postures in this form have been exemplified in ancient Indian sculptures. I am proud to have got it in legacy."

How did it all begin? "My parents nurtured the interest of classical dance inside me, which later turned into passion. I have been practicing for eighteen years now. My late guru and father-in-law Kelucharan Mohapatra transformed my life and perceptions. I have deep admiration for him and I religiously follow his teachings."

Sujata loves Chandigarh and its admiration for classical music. Carrying the legacy of her guru along with her husband Ratikant Mohapatra, Sujata wants to impart this gift to as many disciples as possible. "Just like my guru, I want to take classical music to international levels. However, it's our country that I am more anxious about; where youngsters are overlooking their rich tradition. And that's why I teach a lot of students and conduct workshop at various locations," she adds.

"Having performed in the city ages ago, the artists will sure relish this chance again. We are hoping for an auspicious and invigorating evening" says Shobha Koser, Registrar, Pracheen Kala Kendra.

(The inauguration ceremony will be held at the Tagore Theatre on Wednesday from 6:30 pm onwards)

On cloud nine
Winning a National Award is always a moment to treasure; director Shoojit Sircar and actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui are savouring it every bit
Jasmine Singh

It was the moment for all of them…they couldn't believe it, they yelled in joy; tried to control every expression, but they all sure loved to be the national awardees in various categories of cinema. Shoojit Sircar, the director of Vicky Donor, and actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui were caught off guard with the news, but now that it has sunk in after a hundred-odd interviews, the two are delighted beyond words. At the same time, they wouldn't want the prestigious award to sweep them off their feet.

Triple bonanza

Shoojit Sircar

Director Shoojit Sircar is three times happier; he ended up with three national awards, including the best film, while providing wholesome entertainment. "I was in Hyderabad when I got the news and I am thoroughly elated because this is the most prestigious award," says the director. Did we expect him to break into a 'sperm' dance? "He laughs, yes I did." This award definitely comes as a surprise because he had seen his film being allotted in a different category! "I had imagined that Vicky Donor might do well in socially relevant category but not the popular category. Now that it has, I am glad that people like films on such topics which are considered a social taboo."

Great expectations

I will try hard not to fly in the air and do projects that are equally good. At the same time, I cannot help being really happy.

Films for fun

I wouldn't slot my film in any category or make one for the sole purpose of film festivals. I totally believe subjects like Vicky Donor were always there, it is now that we are taking them to people," adds the director who is currently shooting for Madras Café.

Dream come true

Nawazuddin Siddiqui

His phone was bombarded with messages, but actor Nawazuddin had no time to look into the screen. "I was in the middle of the narration when some hyper activity started on my phone," he laughs. "I checked the messages; I was surprised no end. I thought someone was pulling a fast one on me," shares Nawaz, who received the National Award in Special Jury Award Category for his performances in Kahaani, Gangs of Wasseypur, Talaash and Dekh Indian Circus. Recognition in four different movies definitely is a hurrah moment…right? "Yes, it is a dream come true for every actor. I am glad that my work is being appreciated," he adds.

Ground beneath my feet

"It is the most joyous moment of my life, but I feel I have to start from zero again. I don't plan to carry this award and run with it. This award comes as appreciation for my work, which I will continue doing."

Why should I change?

"I will keep doing roles that are substantial and convincing as an actor," says Nawaz, who is waiting for his next flick Aatma to hit the theatres.

CELEB POINT
Three cheers to good cinema
 Divya Dutta

Every actor goes through different phases in life. Right now it's the advertisement season for me. I am shooting for lots of ads after a long time including the Maggi ad with none other than Mr Bachchan. This was my first advertisement with him. And it was awesome. Both ads were directed by Shoojit Sircar, a super director. It feels great to see his film winning the National award and the super talented Dolly Ahluwalia getting the best supporting award too. It is great to see talent being acknowledged rather than it being just a drill to please the who's who. This year, fortunately had so many good films, different films, different genres, which people loved and accepted like Kahaani, Vicky Donor, Paan Singh Tomar. It's so heartening. A few years back, we were stuck with the formula film making ek tha hero, ek thi heroine, dhushum dhishum and some comedy.

We do have some 80s rehashes coming back and becoming successful like Rowdy Rathore, Dabanng. But what's also different is the set of directors who make stories they want to tell, and people love that. The films like Paan Singh Tomar and kahaani can be sent as the Indian entry to the Oscars too though what went was also well made- Barfi though shrouded in controversy!

All that's now needed is people getting out of groupism and applauding and pushing the genuinely deserving films. All we need is to come together to promote good cinema inconsequential of who one belongs to! On the 100 years of this magical cinema, we need to be together in acknowledging, encouraging promoting genuinely good work, in spite of everything. The sparks of it can be seen in the form of some awesome films this year. I am glad to be an integral part of some of them.

it’s rocking
What a shot!

Hitting it hard on Billboard Top 20 is The Thrift Shop by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis featuring Wanz. Now this tune will get you hooked! Why? Use the Youtube to figure out but before you do so, get tour eyeballs rolling through this shot piece of information. The single is a sleeper hit, on the US Billboard Hot 100 at number 1. It has already sold over 3 million copies in total.

Off the wall video

The video of the song is amazing. I love the wacky way in which it has been shot. It's a very refreshing take on the hip-hop music, which was fast loosing its sheen. Also, the innovation that this song has brought to the genre is praise-worthy.

— Ravinder Rawat, MNC Employee

Words that matter

The first time I heard this song and looked at the people shopping from the thrift shop, while making it look really cool, I could not stop myself from uttering the word “wow"! I give it two thumbs up for the lyrics and ideation. The song really plays well upon the youth today, who don't quiet give a damn about anything. I love the young sprit of the song.

— Simranjit Singh, Student, Panjab University

Beat box

I love the beats of the song and the tune goes well with it too. Besides being a fast number, it has a groove to it. Though the beats per minute (BPM) of the song are not very high, but it has a certain kind of energy to it. Needless to say, the song qualifies for a brilliant party track.

(As told to Amarjot Kaur)

Go-getter
Notes from the heart
Amarjot Kaur

When it comes to off-beat career options, only a few choose to embark on the road less travelled while others forsake it all, waiting for fate to unfold its cards. Now here's a rarity, someone who threw caution to the winds to pursue his passion despite the hurdles that came along. Sumit Verma was studying Phonetics and Economics in Khalsa College, Chandigarh, when he decided to pursue music. His parents, of course, staged a transient show of melodrama while voicing their discontent with his career choice and maintained that he should rather pursue a course in MBA for a secure future. But adamant as Sumit was, he believed in his talent and even more in his passion. Having obtained a Bachelors degree in music from London Centre of Contemporary Music (LCCM), Sumit is now a producer, composer, sound engineer, guitarist, audio engineer and the co-founder of the band - By The Bottle.

Motivational factor

It was Sumit's passion for music all along. Also, his interest in music grew in parallel dimension with his passion, so he started listening to more music and sounds. Later, when he performed with some of the most decorated musicians, he became more or less hooked to both music and sound.

Feather in the cap

Sumit auditioned for LCCM soon after he learnt music from the Gurgaon School of Music. He acquired a grade six in the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM), London, and has performed at a number of avenues. Sumit auditioned in the first MTV Rock Idols in Chandigarh and also performed for the show, Heman, which was telecast on Star One. He has also performed at the Latvian Charity Gig at Grange Hotel, London, after which he performed at Half Moon Putney, Camden and Purple Turtle, including The Shepherd Bush, which is the biggest shopping centre in Europe. Their first single was released in August 2011 and it was called, 'The Ember of that light from the album, Red Wine, Weird Dream.

In their upcoming album, Sumit and his band have collaborated with some of the most celebrated musicians, including Michel Dwyer, Emma Madeline and Steve Gregor, among many others. Sumit is also aiming to make Chandigarh an international music hub soon.

Flipside of being an achiever

Sumit feels that the only drawback of being an achiever is that one has to trade family and friends' time for work. And the contradiction is that one has to be very social at the same time. So, one has to juggle with time and socialising because they are equally important. Also, there are times when people judge you and you have to be very careful as to what you say or do.

Words of wisdom

"Passion is what people should run behind and not money," says Sumit while adding that the culture today has made the youth money-minded, but one can be content only if there is an avenue for individual growth.

Doc Talk
Truth about fillers
Dr Vikas Sharma

Dermal fillers are materials that we use to replace and augment skin tissue. Majority of our skin is made up of collagen bundles and a hydrating material between those. These create the shape and fullness that we see. But skin tissue can be lost because of heredity, sun exposure, muscle action, pressure, sleep positions, smoking, and weight loss or just with age. As this tissue is lost and there is less natural filler underneath, the skin becomes less taut. This can leave wrinkles, folds, depressions, grooves and sagging skin. Refilling these areas restores normal contours and rejuvenates the area and the face.

Several kinds of dermal fillers have been developed to replace that tissue and different ones are best for different people and areas. Temporary and permanent dermal fillers have been approved for plumping up soft tissue, filling in facial wrinkles and smoothing the skin. Many patients require more than one injection to achieve the desired effect, with results typically lasting only six months or so, as fillers are gradually absorbed by the body.

A very fine needle is used to 'fill' the wrinkle, line or skin depression with the product. The wrinkle-smoothing effects of most dermal fillers are temporary and regular treatments are needed to maintain the effect. Some of the different types of dermal fillers include:

Collagen - suitable for deep lines and some scars. The effects last for about four to six months.

Hyaluronic acid - suitable for thin surface lines, such as those that occur around the mouth and across the forehead. The effects last for about one year.

Hyaluronan (a form of hyaluronic acid) - suitable for deep lines and acne scars. This product can be used as an alternative for people who are allergic to collagen. The effects last for about six months.

Polylactic acid - suitable for skin depressions and deep lines. The polylactic acid prompts the treated skin to produce collagen.

Polyacrylamide - suitable for deep lines. Once injected, the product forms a soft and permanent implant.

Fat injections - fat tissue is taken from other areas of the body using a thin needle. The fat is sterilised and injected into the facial line or wrinkle. Effects can be long lasting. Touch-up injections may be needed in some cases. This treatment is also known as 'microlipoinjection'.

Watch out

The adverse fallouts which can occur due to fillers are infection (most common at the injection site), temporary bleeding, lump, bumps and in rare cases permanent disfigurement.

Exercise caution

If you choose to have this type of cosmetic procedure, exercise caution — get dermal filler injections only under the direct supervision of a licensed, dermatologist or a cosmetic surgeon who is skilled in its use and trained to handle unexpected problems.

star track
The bubbly, effervescent Anushka

Anushka Sharma is entertaining, energetic and blunt. In her trademark style, she talks about her weight, movies, poetry and much more.

Weighty issues

I know people say all sorts of things about my weight but, I feel and believe that I am absolutely perfect! If fat people can be happy with their size, why cannot I? I am very healthy and fit; just metabolically blessed. I love my body and energy levels. I eat well, exercise well and sleep well.

Personal verses

I have been writing poetry for some years now. I write in Hindi and English and draw from my personal life. I will not publish my poetry, as it is personal. I enjoy writing and write when I want. Vishal Bhardwaj read my poems and liked them very much. He encouraged me. He even gifted me poems by Gulzar saab, which have not been published yet.

Family first

I maintain my distance from people. I am very professional and have only a few friends in the industry. I will work as an actress as long as I want to and feel like. I feel I am already financially secure for the rest of my life and now, only my passion drives me. I want to have a family and children.

Public eye

People love to categorise actors and actresses. For instance, we had a bubbly heroine till a few years ago and now she has taken a backseat; so everyone wants a replacement for her. It is annoying. My roles have been very different from each other and my work has always been noticed, no matter the fate of the film. I will never give a run-of-the-mill performance. I am so happy that I was called the Jaan of Jab Tak Hai Jaan. I was over the moon!

Being grounded

I had no film for six months after Rab Na Bana Di Jodi. I sat at home and really took stock of the direction - where my life was going, my career and stuff like that. In a way it was good that I did not have a job because it helped me remain grounded. I wanted to prove myself; I was lost for sometime but then I got a grip as being an actress was not part of my plan. I feel blessed that I have worked with most of the directors on my list in just three-four years.

Law and order

Troubled actress Lindsay Lohan has agreed to spend 90 days in a rehabilitation facility as part of a plea deal to settle criminal charges against her. The 26-year-old came 45 minutes late for her scheduled hearing at an LA courthouse. She was clad in a white and pink ensemble and pleaded no contest on two misdemeanour charges relating to a traffic accident last summer and obstructing officers who were investigating the accident, reported a magazine. The judge said Lohan will be sentenced to 90 days in rehab, 30 days of community labour and 18 months of psychological therapy.

The actress will also have to pay a $ 240 restitution fine and $ 30 criminal conviction assessment fee, in addition to paying restitution to the victim; the amount of which will be determined at her next court hearing on May 2.

Her six years of legal troubles trace back to two drunken driving arrests in 2007 and include other incidents in which she was behind the wheel. She has spent 250 days in five rehab facilities since January 2007, including one long court-ordered stint after a failed drug test. The actress has appeared in court at least 20 times before four LA judges who have now found her in violation of probation six times and sentenced her to a total of nine months in jail.

In black and white

Reality TV star Kim Kardashian, who is expecting her first child with rapper Kanye West in July, is planning to create a black and white nursery for her baby.

"Kardashian was gushing about her nursery plans while carefully selecting gifts for her baby registry with sisters Khloe and Kourtney at Bel Bambini in West Hollywood. She mainly looked at simple clothing, nothing too girly," a source said. The gifts include clothes from some of the known luxury brands including Baby Dior, Fendi, Chloe and Roberto Cavalli, reported a publication. Kardashian was also spotted taking pictures of furniture that reflected her desired colour palette to show them to West. — PTI

How you met my mother!

It seems that Sonakshi Sinha's mom, Poonam Sinha, accompanies her to all the sets and to all events. She wants her daughter to look slim but keeps feeding her fattening aloo parathas and even wants her opinion on the shots and scenes to be respected and put into action. Sonakshi's current film crew is quite annoyed by this.

Left, right and centre

Aamir Khan has rejected 200 scripts via his production house in the last 12 months and these included scripts by Vishal Bhardwaj, Pradeep Sarkar and Priyadarshan. The employees are twiddling their thumbs and it is unlikely that he will produce any films this year. Strange!

Worth the wait

Imran Khan's preview theatre, at his pad in Pali Hill, suburban Mumbai, will be functional only in 2014. This is because the state-of-the-art equipment required for it is custom-made and sourced from all over the world. Imran loves watching movies and wants to treat himself to a complete cine-viewing experience at home.

Mahie Gill and Anupam Kher will star in the remake of Bhooter Bhobhishyot, a Bengali film about spirits and land sharks. Saurabh Shukla, Parambrata Chatterjee and Sharman Joshi will also star in the Hindi version.

Rihanna to wear a bikini for her wedding?

R&B star Rihanna and Chris Brown are reportedly planning a 'wild' summer wedding. The on and off couple, who controversially announced their reunion earlier this year, will marry in Barbados this July, reported a website. Rihanna is planning on wearing a bikini at the ceremony rather than a wedding dress as she and Brown want to break the tradition, reported the website.

"This is her way to show the world that she does not care. Rihanna doesn't want a big dress or boring old confetti. She wants to get married in her bikini and have a carnival atmosphere. They want it to be relaxed and fun, like a 'playground', and to celebrate with the people who have stood by them," a source said. Rumours of a summer wedding surfaced last month with a source adding that the couple wants tattoo artists and fire breathers for the special day. The 25-year-old announced her reunion with her former boyfriend in January, insisting that it is important that she is "happy".

She has since said that Brown is not a "monster" despite his violent past. She sparked rumours of a wedding in February when she was seen wearing what appeared to be an engagement ring at the Grammy Awards. — PTI

Success at his feet

That Karan Singh Grover is an exceptionally gifted star has been proven yet again as his show, Qubool Hai that is telecast on Zee TV, has turned out to be a big hit. Here's Karan basking in the glory of his success.

Are you thrilled about the success of your show Qubool Hai?

Yes, it feels good when a project you work hard on achieves success. Asad's role is strong and it requires much effort to be executed. I guess the show clicked with the audience because it was different.

We have heard that you use your own suits and ties for the show?

I do. Shivani, who is the stylist of the show, knows exactly what I want because I've worked with her in Dil Mil Gaye too. Suits give me a different look and I have not worn them on screen before.

Why aren't you media savvy?

I’m not media shy. It's just that I have more to talk about now than I had before.

Who do you think are the top stars on TV today?

I think Ram, Ronit and Gurmeet are the top stars on television and I've had the pleasure of working with them.

Your fans want to see you with your wife Jennifer Winget once again as you both were great together as a pair in Dill Mil Gaye.

Yes, we too want to work together and I guess we will when we get the right subject.

Dexter returns

He is back to sweep you off your feet and this time he will leave you bamboozled as the Star World brings to you the brand new season of the show-Dexter. Based on Jeff Lindsay's novel, Darkly Dreaming Dexter and Dearly Devoted Dexter, this crime thriller will chase the complex life of Dexter Morgan, the protagonist of the show.
