On a musical note
Crawl into the spaces between the notes, curl beneath the octave shifts, cuddle into the symphony of music...which has for long expressed what words have failed to convey! With Johnny Cash and Eric Clapton both releasing their new albums, it is evident that music legends continue to live forever either by producing something new or by having an estate that knows how to keep the legend alive. Chandigarh celebrates the spirit of the music legends and their legacy on the World Music Day.
Commercial cut Himanshu Kappal, whose band ATB, was selected among the top ten bands in the Channel V Launch Pad in 2009, considers Nirvana as the insignia of evolution, especially when it comes to propelling the independent music scene during the early 90's. "When Nirvana came up with the album Nevermind, they unintentionally paved the way for underground bands that wanted to break into the mainstream. They replaced Michael Jackson, who was then topping the charts on the billboard, thereby making it acceptable for grunge and alternative music to get into the popular culture," he says. Revolutionary chord Genre confluence Over five years ago, Adamya Sharma cleared the national round of MTV Rock Idols and he believes that music has different genres; since he was trained in both classical and Western music. "Music, for me, is to explore one's creative spaces and a lot of musicians have done that rather well in different genres. While I like Dream Theatre when it comes to rock and Nustrat Ali Khan for the qawaali music, I adore Pt Ravi Shankar, Pt Ulhas Kashalkar and Pt Ali Akbar Khan for Indian classical music," he says. Rocking Beatles Mihir Raina, a city-based musician, says, "I am in love with the Beatles, for they were the ones who started with the band culture. Also, it's rather amazing how each song that they sung was an instant hit with the audience." He adds, "One of the lesser-known facts about Beatles is that in the late 60s, there was a rumour that Paul McCartney was dead and the band seemed to have replaced him with a look-alike. I love their fan-following," he quips. Two's company Saahil and Ipshita, who have been performing at the Peddlers and at several other places across the city, swear by the musicology of Michael Jackson. "Michael Jackson is the ultimate music legend. I also draw much inspiration from Damien Rice and Ipshita, from Adle. I like Damien's musicology and his voice. However, one thing that really inspires me about him is the fact that his first album was actually recorded with a portable recorder with mikes, which were sometimes propped up inside his shoes," he says. amarjot@tribunemail.com

Music to the ear
More than a hundred countries, five-hundred cities and counting…this Friday is special as people from different nationalities, ages and races cut across all boundaries to celebrate the universal language of music. Here is how Chandigarh takes in the Fête de la Musique! For Harsimram and his band-mates The Surfers, this is a perfect day to share their creations with others who love music. "It's not like everyday one gets a platform to perform," says this class 12th student. Nikita, who plays guitar at The Surfers, is looking forward to the day to listen, play and enjoy good music the whole day, "Music lifts you up, it heals, it gives joy; I am all for the day." Errol Rodrigues and Edwin Rodrigues, known names in Chandigarh, were in fact part of the very first World Music Day celebrations close to a decade-and-a-half ago. "It was just our performance that time," recalls Errol. Their day's twin motive is to encourage amateurs and professionals to perform in public spaces; and to have free concerts that make different genres of music accessible to people. "We are happy that more people are coming and sharing their music on this day," they echo. The brothers intend to live the day in their true spirit and 'sing from the heart' at Pewter Room-26.
Salil Bhatt, dynamic Indian musician, torch-bearer of a five-hundred-year-old musical legacy is glad that Indian audiences are opening up to different musical genres. "Thanks to the Internet, now one cuts across geographical boundaries to know and celebrate music from different regions," says Salil, who is due to release his classical Indian album Satkriti — musical creation of Lord Shiva — soon. "There is so much of good music all across the globe, so each day is like World Music Day for me." Pt Yashpal, classical proponent of the Agra Gharana, who has been into music for seven long decades, shares his take, "Celebrating days is rather a recent concept in our society. It's good to value something and dedicate a day for it, but we also need to imbue a little more spirit into it. If we truly respect music and the artistes, that would be true celebration for me."
mona@tribunemail.com Come June 21 and almost each street in France has musicians merrily playing a melody. Strated in France, Fête de la Musique is a global phenomena now. In Chandigarh, Alliance Française has been celebrating it since 1995. Says Laure Guyot, cultural coordinator, "World Music Day is beautiful in France. We can't do it on the same scale here, yet we aims to bring the music lovers together." CITCO and the tourism department have organised Diljit Dosanjh night at Sector 17 plaza. "Music cuts across all barriers, so here is a high beat performance by Dosanjh," chips in AK Malhotra, general manager, Tourism Department. |

Rahman magic once more
Virgin sound The music of this song is nothing like you have ever heard before and the way this has been sung makes it sound all the more different, yet appealing. I remember listening to the song for the first time while I was flipping through channels and it's been a few days now, but I have not been able to get this song out of my mind. Lovedeep Gulyani, student Romantic interlude Whenever I listen to this song, I am enveloped in the romantic embrace of its lyrical and musical appeal. I love it and I think AR Rahman has done wonders with his magical music. Also, I like the vocals and musical effects too. Shyama Sharma, student Signature touch To put this song in a genre would be to deprive Rahman of the credit that he deserves for his creativity that drips in the song. The sound is truly magical and it has more than just music that adds much substance to it. Not only is it wonderfully choreographed, but the lyrics of the song make it all the more beautiful and fascinating too. Surbhi Vashisht, student — As told to Amarjot Kaur |

This Deol is different
Abay Deol is witty, laid-back and relaxed. He is down to earth and says things way beyond his years. Soon to be seen in Raanjhanna, Abhay talks about his take on life. Choices I make I am not a choosy actor, just a conscious actor. I should be able to relate and identify with the role more than anything else. I have stuck to films that are high on content. I do not see the difference between commercial and offbeat cinema. I only see that there are formula and non-formula films. On being different Deols have an image of being boisterous but I choose my films with a focus on exhibiting my individuality. I think with my heart and not my head. I like to do things which I am creatively inclined towards and that help me create the image that I want. Outsiders in industry A lot of people are entering industry who are not part of film families and want to create their own identity. This allows experimentation and innovation. Ranveer Singh is a good example of an outsider who has made his mark. The industry is family-owned, family run and that will not change. Earlier, films were categorised into action comedy or romance but now we have more genres and a greater variety of films giving actors a chance to prove their mettle. Hundred crore club Every film is commercial in a sense because it has to make money and that is the intention of the producer always. Even so-called offbeat films can enter the 100 crore club and one does not have to make nonsensical movies to earn crores. |

What left Karan speechless?
Karan said, "It makes you feel very inferior as a filmmaker, it's that brilliant. It is such a film which I cannot make as I neither have the talent nor strength to make such a beautiful film." He added, "I haven't seen a film like this in last five-six years. It's a film for cinema-lovers. It seems that director Anand Gandhi has taken a huge chunk of life and has made a film on it. He has made the film from his heart. You can't say much after watching the film. It makes you speechless." The Ship of Theseus premiered at the 12th Toronto International Film Festival, the film explores various aspects of life through three different characters from different walks of life. It releases July 19 in India after having won acclaim internationally. Kiran Rao saw the movie at a screening and approached Gandhi because she wanted the movie to reach maximum audiences. Initially, it will come out in five cities — Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, Bangalore and Kolkata.

Image makeover
The actor will sport a firoza, a blue stone that Salman Khan has been wearing for some years now. While Salman wears his firoza embedded in a silver bracelet, Imran will wear it in a different form. Wearing the firoza stone is considered holy among muslims and Imran feels good about owning one now. He is believed to have sourced it from Bhopal, his hometown. In some scenes in the film, he will even be seen in a Pathani suit. Imran's plays a character who is torn between duty and love.

Laugh it off!
What will be your character be in the show? In the show I play a grandma, as we have shown Kapil's family. She has dreams, aspirations and a huge crush on Dharmendra. As of now it will be recurring, but I guess the channel will take a call once the show goes on air. How will you manage a TV show and this comedy serial? It will be tough but when an actor gets a chance to do different things, one isn't averse to trying to make ends meet. Yes I will have to shoot 12 hours for my show; then go for meetings etc but I will manage. I know audiences will love this show. Why don't you do any serious roles? I have done them in the past but I veered towards comedy and then began getting more roles of such kind. Moreover, I enjoy them more. Why did you chose to do Kapil Sharma's show? It was an interesting concept, which is not seen in India. While there will be skits, there will also be interaction with the audience. Working with a talented bunch of people is an added bonus. What is different in comedy shows today? Comedy is tough and it has always remained that. Only thing is that even today it isn't taken seriously. If we had seasons for shows at least comedy ones, there could be so much more that one could give in terms of entertainment. |
