Ramanand joins casualty list

TASHKENT, Oct 26 (PTI) — India faced another disappointment at the Asian Boxing Championships when star pugilist Ramanand was defeated in the lightweight quarterfinals on the third day of competitions here today.

The seasoned Indian, adjudged the ‘best boxer’ in the recently held Shimla nationals, went down fighting 3-6 to Kazakhstan’s Bekzat Sattarkhanov to join three of his team-mates in the casualty list.

Light welterweight Bhushan Saini, SAF Games champion and light featherweight Mohammed Ali Qamar and flyweight contender M. Suresh Singh were already out of the tournament after losing their first bouts in the tournament.

The contest between Ramanand and the highly-rated Sattarkhanov was virtually decided in the first round as the Kazakh jumped to a solid four point lead.

Ramanand appeared overwhelmed going in against a boxer who competed in the World Championships at Houston earlier in the year and the kazakh also used several lethal combinations in the initial few moments to put the Indian under pressure.

Coach G.S. Sandhu felt that the crowd support for his opponent rattled Ramanand at the start. “He was also overawed by the reputation of the Kazakh boxer and that hampered him initially,” Sandhu said.

Though Ramanand came back strongly in the next three rounds, the four point deficit he conceded in the opening round proved too much for the mild mannered Serviceman.

Interestingly, the judges awarded the last three rounds to Ramanand but the points deficit proved too big a mountain to climb for the mild mannered Serviceman.

After the bout, a dejected Ramanand said the loss was even more heartbreaking than the SAF Games defeat where he finished runner-up. He attributed his defeat to his weak first round performance.

“I had thought of watching him in the first round but he came out firing and I couldn’t respond well,” he conceded.

With one more opportunity to qualify for the Olympics in either of the next two qualifying tournaments, Ramanand expressed confidence of achieving the target. “I will make sure that I qualify,” he signed off confidently.

Tomorrow will be a crucial day for the Indian contingent as both Narendra Rana and Commonwealth Games silver medallist Jitender Kumar enter the rings for their quarterfinal bouts.

Rana will be fighting for the first time in the tournament having received a bye against Hatamov Donier of Tajikistan in the lightweight category.

Rana is another boxer who has been in good form off late. He clinched gold at the Kathmandu SAF Games and also won the national crown at Shimla easily.

But although the Services pugilist has been cooling his heels here, not having to throw a punch for four days, he admitted he felt mentally tired. Rana said although his body was in good shape, a few more days of rest after the recent hectic schedule would have given him the mental edge crucial for such a big event.

Golfer Stewart dies in crash

MINA (South Dakota), Oct 26 (AP) — A Learjet carrying US Open golf champion Payne Stewart and at least four others flew a ghostly journey halfway across the USA its windows iced over and its occupants apparently incapacitated, before crashing nose first into a grassy field. Everyone aboard was killed.

The flight plan said two crew members and three passengers were on the jet, but there were reports a sixth person boarded the plane just before it took off yesterday from Orlando, Florida.

The chartered, twin-engine Lear 35 might have suddenly lost cabin pressure soon after taking off for Dallas, government officials said. Air traffic controllers couldn’t contact anyone by radio.

Fighter jets sent after the plane followed it for much of its flight but were unable to help. The pilots drew close and noticed no structural damage but were unable to see into the Learjet because its windows were frosted over, indicating the temperature inside was well below freezing.

Apparently set on autopilot, the plane cruised 2,250 kilometres across six states. Authorities said the plane was "porpoising," fluctuating between 6,600 and 15,300 metres. It presumably ran out of fuel some four hours after it took off.

Stewart, 42, was one of the most recognisable players in golf with his traditional plus fours and a tam-o’-shanter hat.

Punjab in sight of outright win
By Gopal Sharma
Tribune News Service

SAS Nagar, Oct 26 -- Barring a last-minute miracle or disruption by weather, chances of which look minimal at the moment, Punjab are poised for an outright victory in their North Zone Ranji Trophy league match against Himachal Pradesh at the Punjab Cricket Association stadium here.

Set a seemingly impossible target of 402 runs for victory, the visitors were 127 for the loss of five wickets.Himachal skipper Rajiv Nayyar showed creditable determination and application to remain undefeated at 38 when stumps were drawn after his nearly two-and-a-half hour vigil at the wicket.

Middle order batsman Ajay Rai looked assured in 50-minute stay at the wicket before he was consumed lbw by offie Sarandeep Singh on the second last ball of the day when the day's play came to an end.

Punjab resuming from their overnight score of 38 for two batted up to the lunch break and added 138 runs more in 37 overs before declaring their innings closed.Credit for setting an extremely stiff target goes to Dinesh Mongia who was in fine nick and played a breezy innings of 100 runs.

Mongia stroked the ball well and hit three exquisite boundaries off medium pacer Shakti Singh in the same over. Mongia, in the process notched up his fifth century in 28th match in the championship facing 110 balls and hitting 10 fours and two sixes.

The left-handed batsman in the company of Amit Sharma added 133 runs for the third- wicket partnership, before the latter fell to left-arm spinner Jaswant Rai after making 33.None of other Punjab batsmen was able to make any impression.

In their second essay, the visitors suffered an early jolt losing opener Rahul Panta in the first over. Panta tried to be enterprising too early in the innings and was caught at square leg off medium pacer Sandeep Sharma, after he had been despatched twice to the boundary in the same over.

Rajiv, who came in to bat next, dropped anchor at one end and concentrated on preserving his wicket. Nischal Gaur, the other opener, batted sensibly and both the batsmen took the score past the 50-run mark before mediumpacer Reetinder Sodhi struck, trapping Gaur on the pads. The umpire had no hesitation in raising the finger as Gaur, not pleased with the verdict, started for the pavilion.Gaur's 37-run knock contained six boundaries.

Sangram and Rajiv survived some anxious moments, particularly facing spinners, but doggedly defied the rival bowling attack. They added 40 runs to the total in 20-odd overs before twin strikes by left-arm spinner Navdeep Singh which saw the backs of Sangram and Yashwinder Pal Singh, who batted confidentially in the first innings, put paid to Himachal's already faint hopes of salvaging pride in the inaugural match of the championship.

Delhi poised for innings win

NEW DELHI, Oct 26 (PTI) — Despite a valuable 60-run stand between Abu Eric and Sarabjit Singh, Services were struggling to avoid an innings defeat against Delhi on the third day of four-day North Zone Ranji Trophy cricket match here today.

Services, trailing by 303 runs after Delhi declared their first innings at 444 for eight, were reeling at 140 for five in their second innings, at close with Sarabjit Singh, batting on 42, waging a lone battle at the Harbaksh Stadium here.

The hosts, who were shot out for a paltry 141 in their first essay, still needed 163 runs to make Delhi bat again with only five wickets intact.

Earlier, middle-order batsman Mithun Manhas struck an unbeaten 125 as Delhi, overnight 359 for seven, added 85 more runs before declaring their first innings,

Medium pacer Amit Bhandari then claimed two quick wickets to rip through the Services top order to raise hopes for an innings defeat.

Abu Eric (39) and Sarabjit Singh then got together to save Services from acute embarrassment before Bhandari added Eric to his victim’s list to push Services closer to a defeat.

Eric struck six fours during his 214-minute stay at the crease. Sarabjit continued with his disciplined vigil at the wicket and found an able partner in G. S. Thapa (batting 7).

Rehman sacked; Altaf PCB chief

ISLAMABAD, Oct 26 (PTI) — Pakistani military authorities today sacked Mr Mujeebur Rehman as the ad-hoc chairman of the country’s cricket board and appointed former Test player and national selector Zafar Altaf as the new chief.

President Muhammad Rafiq Tarar, patron-in-chief of the Pakistan Cricket Board, issued the orders appointing Mr Altaf as the new PCB chairman and asking him to add at least three members to the new set-up to run the affairs of cricket in the country.

Altaf, a member of the Pakistani team which toured India in the 1950s and recently a national selector and manager of the national side in the 199 World Cup, has been asked to select his own team by the President.

The appointment of Mr Altaf as the new PCB chief was very much on the cards after the board became virtually rudderless following the sudden disappearance of Mr Rehman in the wake of the army coup on October 12.

Mr Rehman, who was close to deposed Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, is either under custody of the army authorities or has gone underground, according to media reports.

Haryana schools to have games period

SIRSA, Oct 26 (UNI) — Haryana Chief Minister Om Parkash Chautala has said that a period for games would be included in the school curriculum in the state to groom promising players from an early age.

Speaking at the valedictory function of the rural invitational sports function at Chautala village, near here, last evening, Mr Chautala said that a sports hostel would be set up at the Sahib Ram Stadium complex at Chautala.

Jeev, who is yet to win a major title on this course, wears an optimistic look of performing superbly. “I am enjoying my game immensely”, said Jeev, adding: “I am determined to achieve better results than I have so far achieved on this course”.

Randhawa, richer in his experience after participation in the Alfred Dunhill Cup, feels confident of retaining the title. Fourteenth on the Davidoff Tour, Randhawa said he was hitting the ball well. “Golf is as unpredictable as cricket, said Randhawa, adding: “But I am going to try earnestly to retain the title’.

Despite flight problems, many foreigners have already arrived here. Among them are quite a few known faces. Among them is Gerry Norquist (USA), who loves to play on the course. Winner of third place last year, he is a player of exceptional skill. He hits a long ball and he should be able to translate his desire of winning a title into reality, if luck smiles on him. He is a type of player who is moderate both in win and defeat.

Thirteen among 75 Indian pros are regulars. Feroz Ali, last year’s Indian Open champion, and Vijay Kumar are capable of causing surprises. They have in them to rise to the occasion provided they are able to stay cool and calm on the course. The performance of Harmeet Kahlon, Amit Dube and Digvijay Singh will be watched with more than casual interest.

Among Indian veterans will be Ali Sher. He won the Indian Open title in 1991 and 1993. Will he be able to bring about another surprise this year? It is not beyond him if he gets into his belligerent mood.

The course is in a superb condition. Greens are fast and true. The championship begins with Pro-Am tomorrow.

Kapil Dev, India’s cricket manager, and Roger Binny had a round today. Maybe, Binny will play in the Pro-Am tomorrow.
