Power tariff hike for development: Bansi From Our Correspondent PANIPAT, July 7 The Haryana Chief Minister, Mr Bansi Lal, has said that power tariff had to be increased so that development works could continue. He was addressing a public meeting at Kurar village, 20 km from here today. It was organised by Mr Kartar Singh Bhadana, MLA from the Samalkha constituency. He said because of a revision in grades of the employees, the Haryana State Electricity Board had to bear an additional expenditure of Rs 60 crore every year. The state would have sufficient electricity as 1,200 mw would be generated within the next one-and-a-half years. The Chief Minister said the present government which was committed to ensure round-the-clock power supply had already augmented 103 substations, set up 21 new substations and laid 1890 km new transmission lines within two years. In all, the government had invested about Rs 400 crore to improve the power sector. "It would be unfair to compare the price of power in Haryana with neighbouring states because the state does not have adequate cheap sources of power supply like hydro-electric power as in the case of neighbouring states of Punjab and Himachal Pradesh," he said Haryana mainly depends upon purchase from central generating agencies to meet its power requirement. He said the state government had provided about Rs 8 crore to the ![]() Mr Bansi Lal said priority was being given to improve the availability of power for paddy and oilseed crops in Kurukshetra, Kaithal, Yamunanagar, Karnal districts and parts of Panipat, Ambala and Ahirwal. He said that the HVP-BJP alliance government was not anti-people or anti-farmer as alleged by leaders of the Opposition parties, including Mr Om Prakash Chautala and Mr Bhajan Lal. These leaders he alleged, were power hungry and they were trying to grab the power in Haryana. He said the Opposition parties had no right to criticise the government for hike as the HVP had launched a massive power restructuring and refurbishing programme to improve the power sector while the previous governments had neglected the power sector. ![]() |
Attempts to grab public land foiled From Our Correspondent FATEHABAD, July 7 Large-scale encroachment on Public land by influential persons had made the public on alert. There have been many incidents of land grab attempts with the blessings of certain powerful politicians of the area in the recent past. Residents of Akanwali village, in this district appeared before Deputy Commissioner, P.C. Bidhan at his weekly open darbar and complained that some influential persons of the village were trying to grab common land of the village. The residents also complained that the land grabbers had the patronage of certain politicians of the area. The Deputy Commissioner referred the matter to the Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Mr Phateh Singh Dagar, who foiled the attempt with police help. Though the attempt has been foiled, local residents still fear that said elements may try to grab the land again. In an almost similar incident certain influential persons tried to encroach on two plots of shops belonging to the Market Committee at Bhuna in this district. The alleged land grabbers had dumped building meterial on the plots with the intention of constructing shops on these plots. They had the patronage of powerful persons. When the local administration tried to intervene, they managed a decree from a court and produced it before the authorities, The local shopkeepers of the grain market met the Deputy Commissioner here, who referred this case to the SDM. The SDM, Mr Dagar, ordered the removal of the encroachment and a wall was erected by the market committee, on the piece of land to foil any future attempt by unscrupulous elements to grab the land. These two are not isolated cases of land-grab attempt by influential persons. In fact this has become a routine these days, with powerful persons trying to grab common land in the villages. Even government property is not spared. Protests by local residents has thwarted many such attempts. Though the administration has foiled the recent attempt of land grabbing local residents fear that attempts might be repeated. ![]() |
