Grenade attack on Mufti's house SRINAGAR, Sept 11 Senior Congress leader and MP Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, his daughter and Legislature Congress Party leader, Mehbooba Mufti, and other members of his family had a narrow escape when militants attacked their house with a grenade at Nowgam on the outskirts of Srinagar yesterday. Elsewhere in the Kashmir valley, eight persons, including five militants, two securitymen and a counter-insurgent, were killed while militants exploded a low-intensity bomb inside a heavily-guarded bank complex and torched a house since last evening, an official spokesman said here today. The militants lobbed a powerful grenade at the house of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed at Nowgam in Srinagar yesterday. The grenade missed the target and exploded near the outer wall of the house without causing any damage, the spokesman said. Congress sources said the incident took place around 8.45 p.m. yesterday when the Mufti, his daughter, Mehbooba Mufti, and other family members were sitting in the garden. In another incident, militants fired at a mini bus going from Anantnag town to Achchabal around, noon today. One passenger, identified as Abdul Hamid was killed and four others were injured in the firing, a police spokesman said. The incident took place at Thajwari. JAMMU: BSF jawans have arrested two collaborators of the Lashker-e-Toiba charged with killing six members of a particular community at Chandi last month in Udhampur district, a BSF spokesman said here on Friday. The two, identified as Mohammad Ghulam and Mohammad Amin, residents of Chandi, were nabbed by BSF troops during search operations in the Mahore area of Udhampur district, the spokesman said. Ghulam and Amin confessed that they along with five others had actively participated in the killing of six Hindus and setting ablaze eight houses in Chandi village on August 3 this year, the spokesman said. Meanwhile, Indian and Pakistani troops continued to exchange fire since Thursday night at several places along the international border while one militant was killed and another wounded during an encounter at Bhaderwah town of Doda district in the Jammu region, official reports said. The Pakistan Rangers, using light and medium machine guns opened unprovoked fire on seven Indian border outposts of Alfa Machal, Caroda, B.T. Forward, Sangral, Bobiya, Londi and Katao in the R.S. Pura and Samba sectors, they said. BSF troops returned the fire and the exchange continued without causing any damage on the Indian side. |

Legislature complex work to be resumed SRINAGAR, Sept 11 Work on the Rs 41-crore legislature complex comprising both Assembly and Council Chambers is scheduled to recommence here shortly. This was decided at a high-level meeting under the chairmanship of the Chief Minister, Dr Farooq Abdullah, here today. Earlier designed only for the Legislative Assembly, the complex will now also have the Legislative Council Chambers. Work on the complex was taken up in 1981 at a cost of Rs 6 crore, of which Rs 4 crore was spent until work came to a halt in 1989. Later the project was again revived and some more land acquired around the complex. Rs 1.06 crore will be provided as compensation for land acquisition. The Chief Minister said the construction schedule would be drawn only after the release of budgetary allocations. He, however, asked the Jammu and Kashmir Projects Construction Corporation to ensure the completion of the complex within three years. The meeting also reviewed the progress on bridges under construction. |

Huge cache of arms seized, two
arrested SRINAGAR, Sept 11 The Special Operations Group (SOG), Budgam, of the Jammu and Kashmir Police has seized a large quantity of arms and ammunition being transported to Srinagar by two militants of the Hizbul Mujahideen, who have been arrested. The bus in which the arms were being carried has been impounded, the DIG, Mr P.L. Gupta, told newspersons here this morning. He said the seizure was made following a tip-off. Two missiles of 107 mm rocket launchers, 18 rockets, along with 18 boosters, 31 wireless sets, 20 radio remote control devices, 50 detonators, 25 kg of explosives, four AK 47 rifles and six grenades have been seized. He said the arms were meant to be distributed through a divisional commander of the Hizbul Mujahideen among militants in Srinagar, Budgam and Ganderbal areas. The weapons were being carried from Kupwara and were intercepted between Baramulla and Srinagar. |
