AMRITSAR
Vikas manch:
The Amritsar Vikas Manch has stressed upon the need for public toilets and lavatories, and more overbridges and subways on the GT Road. In a letter to the Mayor of Amritsar, Mr Subhash Chander Sharma, General Secretary of the manch, Dr Charanjit Singh Gumtala, appreciated the initiative of the Municipal Corporation in involving private agencies in the construction and maintenance of a footbridge near the bus stand.

One killed: A motor cyclist identified as Gurmej Singh (24), a resident of Dugri village, was killed in a road accident on Tuesday near Rasulpur village. The local sadar police has registered a case under Sections 304-A, 279, 338, and 427 of the IPC against the truck driver responsible for the accident.

BATALA
Report denied:
Mr Sohan Lal Parbhakar, General Secretarys of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of Batala district, said on Wednesday that Mr Kashmir Singh Rajput of Qadian in Gurdaspur district was not the president of the party's Qadian mandal, Mr Parbhakar said Mr Rajput was not even a member of the BJP at present. He further denied a news item published in these columns on April 6 that Mr Kashmir Singh was the president of the Qadian mandal.

FEROZEPORE
Protest march:
Punjab DIET students and unemployed elementary teachers took out a protest march here on Wednesday from DIET to the DC's office in support of their demands. They presented a memorandum to the administration demanding not to fill ETT posts with B.Ed teachers.

Rally: The non-teaching staff of the local R.S.D. College held a rally here on Wednesday in support of its demands. They were demanding revised pay scales.

HOSHIARPUR
First aid post:
Keeping in view the sharp increase in road accidents, the Home Guards has recently opened a first aid post at Tanda on the Jalandhar-Pathankot highway. The district commandant of the Home Guards, Hoshiarpur, stated in a press note here on Wednesday that Home Guards personnel trained in first aid had been deployed the post.

Foundation day: The local unit of the BJP celebrated its foundation day as "Sankalp Divas" here on Tuesday. A function, presided over by Mr Hansraj Nakra, President of the district unit of the party, was arranged on the occasion. All participants took a pledge that they would work according to the principles of the party.

JALANDHAR
Credit plan:
The annual credit plan of Rs 595.61 crore for the district for the year 1999-2000, prepared by UCO Bank was launched here on Wednesday by the Deputy Commissioner, Mr Som Parkash, Mr J.R. Sharma, Regional Manager, UCO Bank, said that according to the plan, Rs 238.41 crore would be given as loan to the agricultural sector, Rs 158.80 crore to the small scale industry sector and Rs 87.04 crore to other priority sectors.

LUDHIANA
Bharatiya Yog Sansthan:
The Bharatiya Yog Sansthan celebrated its silver jubilee (1975-99) at Rakh Bag here on Sunday. Mr Charanjit Singh Atwal, Speaker of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha, inaugurated the function which was attended by more than 700 persons including nearly 200 women and children.

MOGA
Society formed:
A Drugs and AIDS Control Society has been formed here under the patronship of the Deputy Commissioner, Mr Kulbir Singh Kang, according to the District Coordinator of the NGOs, Mr S.K.Bansal. The Civil Surgeon and the District Education Officer are its members, he added. Two seminars, organised by the society in Dala and Dedarewala villages in the district, have educated as many as 1,200 students in different institutions about the harmful effects of drugs and AIDS awareness.

One killed: A middle-aged unidentified person, said to be a government school teacher, died on Wednesday when his scooter collided with a tractor trolley coming from the opposite direction. He was returning to his village, Rode, in the district.

NAWANSHAHR
Literacy drive:
The District Literacy Society organised a function at J.S.F.H. Khalsa High School here on Wednesday. Two organisations were honoured for the success of the literacy drive. Mr Ashok Kumar Sikka, SDM, presided over the function. The Deputy Commissioner, Dr Roshan Sunkaria, was the chief guest.

Protest rally: Hundreds of non-teaching employees of all private colleges of the district organised a protest rally here on Wednesday in support of their long-pending demands which include implementation of revised pay scales, provision for pension and a gratuity scheme. Mr Ashok Sharma and Mr Sham Lal, President and Secretary, respectively, of the district unit of the Private Colleges Non-Teaching Employees' Union criticised the adamant attitude of the State Government while addressing the rally. They also submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner.

Rally: The district unit of Bhatha Workers' Union, Punjab, organised a rally here on Thursday in support of its demands, including enforcement of the Factory Act at brick-kilns, maintenance of an attendance register, issuance of temporary ration cards for migratory labourers, opening of the office of the Assistant Labour Commissioner at Nawanshahr and arrangements for educating the children of the labourers. The union also submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner, Mr Kulwinder Singh Warraich.

NANGAL
Tercentenary celebrations:
About 5,000 BJP workers, including local leaders, municipal councillors, sarpanchs and panchs will go to Anandpur to attend the inauguration ceremony of tercentenary celebrations of the birth of the Khalsa by Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee on Thursday. This information was given by the Mr Subhash Chander, President of the BJP, Nangal.

PATIALA
Elected:
The following have been elected office-bearers of the Bharat Vikas Parishad, Punjab (East) here: President — Mr Sarv Daman Bharat; General Secretary — Mr H.C. Jain and Treasurer — Mr Ahanti Prakash Gupta.

Blood donation camp: The local Lions Club (Moti Bagh) and Thalassemic Children's Welfare Association organised a blood donation camp for thalassemic patients here on Wednesday at the DECW auditorium. As many as 229 units of blood were donated. A team of doctors from the PGI helped to organise the camp.

Found dead: A middle-aged woman, Ramalo Kaur, was found dead in mysterious circumstances in her house at Seona village near Patiala-Bhadson road here on Tuesday night. According to the police, there were no external injury marks on the body and hence the possibility of murder could be ruled out. The police suspects that the woman may have consumed poison.

SANGRUR
Population control:
Dr Puran Singh Jassi, Director, Health and Family Welfare, Punjab, has stressed the need to control the increasing population for ensuring better physical and economic health for the family. Dr Jassi said this while presiding over a district-level function organised by the district health authorities in collaboration with the Population Control Committee here on Wednesday. Mr Udhey Partap Singh, Chairman, of the committee, said population control committees had been formed in over 100 villages in the district to create awareness among the masses on the subject.

Gate rally: The non-teaching employees of the Sri Guru Gobind Singh College held a gate rally here on Thursday to protest against the non-implementation of their long-pending demands, which include employment to one family member of each employee who died while in service, change of designation of laboratory staff according to the DPI (Colleges), U.T., uniform for Class IV employees and salary for March. They also requested the Chandigarh Police to arrest the culprits who had attacked the chowkidars of the college on the night of February 17.

Circus: Empire Circus will be in the city from Friday. This 25-year-old circus, would perform in the city for the first time, for the next one and a half months The circus would be inaugurated by the Mayor, Mr Kewal Krishen Addiwal.top

AMBALA
Elected:
The following have been elected office-bearers of the Ambala Chartered Accountants' Association: President — Mr Rajnish K. Dutta; Vice-President — Mr Subhash Goel; Secretary — Mr Mukesh Jain; and Treasurer — Mr Pankaj Aggarwal.

Arrested: The police has arrested Dinesh, alias Rinku, for the murder of Monu on March 25, during the Ram Navmi procession. Dinesh is the seventh suspect to be arrested in the case, according to the district police chief, Mr M.S. Malik. Mr Malik said another suspect had been held in a case related to the looting of Mr Daman Jain at Ambala City on October 5. The suspect, Harpal Singh, a resident of Ludhiana, is a member of the gang which had shot at Mr Jain and robbed him of Rs 2.5 lakh.

Died: Mr Ramesh Kaushal, an advocate, died here on Wednesday. The court work remained suspended for half a day on account of the death.

FARIDABAD
Sentenced:
Mr P.L. Goyal, Additional District and Sessions Judge, sentenced Irfan of Inderpuri, Palwal to life imprisonment on Wednesday for setting Suraiya, his wife, on fire. Suraiya died later. According to the prosecution, Irfan, along with his brother, Umar, his sisters, Sharda and Baby, and his mother, Ahmadi, set Suraiya on fire on May 9, 1998 for not being able to meet their dowry demands. Mr Goyal acquitted Umar, Sharda, Baby and Ahmadi by giving them the benefit of doubt.

Arrested: The police has arrested Anu Kapoor of old Faridabad on the charge of cheating a number of people. A police spokesman said she had collected Rs 7 lakh in the name of a lottery-cum-liquid soap agency. She later refused to refund the money and escaped to Delhi.

HISAR
Held on rape charge:
Four persons were arrested on Wednesday on the charge of allegedly gangraping a 14-year-old girl at Ladwa village, about 15 km from here, on March 30, the police said. Those arrested were Ishwar, Om Prakash, Mohinder and Gauri Shanker of the same village.

Traffic blocked: Irate villagers and activists of the Indian National Lok Dal on Wednesday blocked the Hansi-Chandigarh road for several hours in protest against the bad condition of the road. They alleged that the government had not finished the construction work on the road for the past several months resulting in inconvenience to the villagers residing in Narnaund and its surrounding areas. They lifted the dharna after officers of the PWD gave assurance for the early completion of the work.

ROHTAK
Goods recovered:
The district police has claimed to have recovered stolen goods worth Rs 10.86 lakh by solving one case of robbery, 20 cases of snatching and 10 cases of theft during the past month. In a statement here on Wednesday Mr P.K. Aggarwal, SSP, Rohtak, said 47 cases were registered under the Excise Act, six under the Arms Act and four under the Drugs and Narcotics Prevention Act during the period.

School inaugurated: The Indo-British School, established here by the Indo-British Education Society (IBES), was inaugurated on Wednesday by Mr Peter Skinner, member of European Parliament. The school is the first of its kind in Haryana. Mr Chandan Singh, President of the District Unit of the IBES said the society would get full technical and financial support from the IBES, UK.

SIRSA
Five hurt:
Five persons, including four women, were seriously injured at Chautala village, about 90 km from here, on Wednesday when their jeep collided with another jeep. A jeep carrying 12 persons, including four women, was going to Risaliakhera village when it collided with the other jeep. The injured were hospitalised and a criminal case under Section 279, 377 and 427 of the IPC on the charge of rash and negligent driving was registered against one of the drivers, Vijay Singh.

SONEPAT
Survey urged:
The district unit of the Mahila BJP has urged the district administration to conduct another survey of the people living below the poverty line in the district. This demand is contained in a resolution adopted at a meeting of the party held here on Wednesday. The meeting pointed out that a large number of persons, living below the poverty line had not been included in such a list and they had been deprived of the subsidised ration and other facilities.

Nominated: Mr Bharpai Chahal has been nominated as the in charge of the Sonepat Mandal of the BJP with immediate effect.

Killed: An unidentified man (50) was killed on the spot when he was hit by a train at the railway station here on Wednesday. According to the railway police, he was crossing the railway track when the accident occurred. The body has been sent for a postmortem examination.

Eve-teasing: The Bharatiya Gramin Anchal Samiti on Wednesday protested against eve-teasing by anti-social elements in the trains between Sonepat and Delhi, especially at Narela and Azadpur railway stations. The samiti urged Union Railway Minister, Nitish Kumar to direct the railway authorities as well as the railway police to take stern action against such elements.

Run over: Mr Ramanna Mehto, a resident of Nawab Kothi, Chhapra (Bihar), was reportedly crushed to death by an unknown vehicle on the G.T. Road near Rai village, about 15 km from here, on Tuesday. The police has registered a case but no arrest has been made so far.

Accident: A 35-year-old unidentified man was killed in a road accident on the Sonepat-Gohana road near Mohana village, about 20 km from here, on Tuesday. According to the police, the body of the victim has not been identified so far. The victim was reportedly hit by an unknown vehicle and killed on the spot.

Rally: The local unit of the BJP held a rally to commemorate the foundation day of the party here on Wednesday. The rally, addressed by several BJP leaders, appealed to the workers to remain united.

YAMUNANAGAR

Blindness control:
A sum of Rs 6.33 lakh will be spent in Kulu under different programmes being launched by the district Blindness Control Society to control blindness in the district during the current financial year. This was stated by Mr R.D. Dhiman, Deputy Commissioner of Kullu, who is also the Chairman of the society, in a meeting held here on Wednesday.
