Vikas manch: The Amritsar Vikas Manch has
stressed upon the need for public toilets and
lavatories, and more overbridges and subways on
the GT Road. In a letter to the Mayor of
Amritsar, Mr Subhash Chander Sharma, General
Secretary of the manch, Dr Charanjit Singh
Gumtala, appreciated the initiative of the
Municipal Corporation in involving private
agencies in the construction and maintenance of a
footbridge near the bus stand.One killed: A
motor cyclist identified as Gurmej Singh (24), a
resident of Dugri village, was killed in a road
accident on Tuesday near Rasulpur village. The
local sadar police has registered a case under
Sections 304-A, 279, 338, and 427 of the IPC
against the truck driver responsible for the
accident.
BATALA
Report denied: Mr Sohan Lal Parbhakar,
General Secretarys of the Bharatiya Janata Party
(BJP) of Batala district, said on Wednesday that
Mr Kashmir Singh Rajput of Qadian in Gurdaspur
district was not the president of the party's
Qadian mandal, Mr Parbhakar said Mr Rajput was
not even a member of the BJP at present. He
further denied a news item published in these
columns on April 6 that Mr Kashmir Singh was the
president of the Qadian mandal.
FEROZEPORE
Protest march: Punjab DIET students and
unemployed elementary teachers took out a protest
march here on Wednesday from DIET to the DC's
office in support of their demands. They
presented a memorandum to the administration
demanding not to fill ETT posts with B.Ed
teachers.
Rally:
The non-teaching staff of the local R.S.D.
College held a rally here on Wednesday in support
of its demands. They were demanding revised pay
scales.
HOSHIARPUR
First aid post: Keeping in view the sharp
increase in road accidents, the Home Guards has
recently opened a first aid post at Tanda on the
Jalandhar-Pathankot highway. The district
commandant of the Home Guards, Hoshiarpur, stated
in a press note here on Wednesday that Home
Guards personnel trained in first aid had been
deployed the post.
Foundation
day: The local unit of the BJP celebrated its
foundation day as "Sankalp Divas" here
on Tuesday. A function, presided over by Mr
Hansraj Nakra, President of the district unit of
the party, was arranged on the occasion. All
participants took a pledge that they would work
according to the principles of the party.
JALANDHAR
Credit plan: The annual credit plan of Rs
595.61 crore for the district for the year
1999-2000, prepared by UCO Bank was launched here
on Wednesday by the Deputy Commissioner, Mr Som
Parkash, Mr J.R. Sharma, Regional Manager, UCO
Bank, said that according to the plan, Rs 238.41
crore would be given as loan to the agricultural
sector, Rs 158.80 crore to the small scale
industry sector and Rs 87.04 crore to other
priority sectors.
LUDHIANA
Bharatiya Yog Sansthan: The Bharatiya Yog
Sansthan celebrated its silver jubilee (1975-99)
at Rakh Bag here on Sunday. Mr Charanjit Singh
Atwal, Speaker of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha,
inaugurated the function which was attended by
more than 700 persons including nearly 200 women
and children.
MOGA
Society formed: A Drugs and AIDS Control
Society has been formed here under the patronship
of the Deputy Commissioner, Mr Kulbir Singh Kang,
according to the District Coordinator of the
NGOs, Mr S.K.Bansal. The Civil Surgeon and the
District Education Officer are its members, he
added. Two seminars, organised by the society in
Dala and Dedarewala villages in the district,
have educated as many as 1,200 students in
different institutions about the harmful effects
of drugs and AIDS awareness.
One killed:
A middle-aged unidentified person, said to be a
government school teacher, died on Wednesday when
his scooter collided with a tractor trolley
coming from the opposite direction. He was
returning to his village, Rode, in the district.
NAWANSHAHR
Literacy drive: The District Literacy Society
organised a function at J.S.F.H. Khalsa High
School here on Wednesday. Two organisations were
honoured for the success of the literacy drive.
Mr Ashok Kumar Sikka, SDM, presided over the
function. The Deputy Commissioner, Dr Roshan
Sunkaria, was the chief guest.
Protest
rally: Hundreds of non-teaching employees of
all private colleges of the district organised a
protest rally here on Wednesday in support of
their long-pending demands which include
implementation of revised pay scales, provision
for pension and a gratuity scheme. Mr Ashok
Sharma and Mr Sham Lal, President and Secretary,
respectively, of the district unit of the Private
Colleges Non-Teaching Employees' Union criticised
the adamant attitude of the State Government
while addressing the rally. They also submitted a
memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner.
Rally:
The district unit of Bhatha Workers' Union,
Punjab, organised a rally here on Thursday in
support of its demands, including enforcement of
the Factory Act at brick-kilns, maintenance of an
attendance register, issuance of temporary ration
cards for migratory labourers, opening of the
office of the Assistant Labour Commissioner at
Nawanshahr and arrangements for educating the
children of the labourers. The union also
submitted a memorandum to the Deputy
Commissioner, Mr Kulwinder Singh Warraich.
NANGAL
Tercentenary celebrations: About 5,000 BJP
workers, including local leaders, municipal
councillors, sarpanchs and panchs will go to
Anandpur to attend the inauguration ceremony of
tercentenary celebrations of the birth of the
Khalsa by Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee on
Thursday. This information was given by the Mr
Subhash Chander, President of the BJP, Nangal.

Blood
donation camp: The local Lions Club (Moti
Bagh) and Thalassemic Children's Welfare
Association organised a blood donation camp for
thalassemic patients here on Wednesday at the
DECW auditorium. As many as 229 units of blood
were donated. A team of doctors from the PGI
helped to organise the camp.
Found dead: A
middle-aged woman, Ramalo Kaur, was found dead in
mysterious circumstances in her house at Seona
village near Patiala-Bhadson road here on Tuesday
night. According to the police, there were no
external injury marks on the body and hence the
possibility of murder could be ruled out. The
police suspects that the woman may have consumed
poison.
SANGRUR
Population control: Dr Puran Singh Jassi,
Director, Health and Family Welfare, Punjab, has
stressed the need to control the increasing
population for ensuring better physical and
economic health for the family. Dr Jassi said
this while presiding over a district-level
function organised by the district health
authorities in collaboration with the Population
Control Committee here on Wednesday. Mr Udhey
Partap Singh, Chairman, of the committee, said
population control committees had been formed in
over 100 villages in the district to create
awareness among the masses on the subject.
