Curfew relaxed
AHMEDABAD,
July 31 (PTI) Curfew was relaxed for eight hours
since 9 a.m. in the Shahpur and Karanj areas today
following improvement in the situation in the riot-torn
areas of the city, rocked by violence since July 20. The
police said no untoward incident was reported from any
part of the curfew-bound areas and the relaxation period
had been extended till 10 p.m. for women and children.MiG upgradation
MOSCOW,
July 31 (UNI) Russia has agreed to upgrade
Indias MiG fighter plane fleet with the latest
Russian technology, media reports today said. The
agreement was finalised during first Deputy Prime
Minister Viktor Khristenks just-concluded visit to
New Delhi, Segodnya daily said.

surrender
GUWAHATI,
July 31 (PTI) Twenty-two ULFA militants laid down
arms yesterday, an army press release said here today.
The ultras surrendered at a simple ceremony at the army
camp at Rangghar Chariali as the officiating commander of
2 Mountain Artillery Brigade, A.K. Rekhi, welcomed them
to the mainstream.
12 die in Turkey
DIYARBAKIR,Turkey,
July 31 (AFP) Twelve persons were killed and 15
injured in clashes between separatist Kurdish rebels and
Turkish security forces in eastern and southeastern
Turkey, local security sources in this southeastern
Anatolian city said today. In Van province in eastern
Anatolia, a group of Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) rebels
killed four Kurdish village guards who were accompanying
Turkish telecom workers on their mission to connect a
phone line to a village.
Ship seized
TAIPEI,
July 31 (AP) The Chinese seized a Taiwanese cargo
ship off the Taiwanese military outpost of Matsu island
today on the suspicion of smuggling, officials said. The
Chinese towed the "Hsinhua" carrying 10 crew to
the southern Chinese port of Mawei in Fujian province,
said boat owner Feng Nen-Ti.
Taliban action
KABUL, July
31 (AP) The ruling Taliban militia today battled
to within 5 km of the oppositions key air base, an
opposition spokesman said. Taliban forces pushed forward
in the Bagram district of Parwan province after fierce
fighting, Hussain Sohail, a spokesman for the
northern-based opposition alliance, said.
CPM men beheaded
MIDNAPORE,
July 31 (PTI) Three CPM activists were beheaded by
miscreants allegedly at the behest of the Trinamool
Congress, the BJP and Naxalites at a village in West
Bengal's Midnapore district, the police said today.
Torsos of the three men were recovered from Saluberia
village today. The incident took place when the victims
were returning after attending a meeting at nearby
Bethura village last night.
Wye river accord
CAIRO, July
31 (AP) Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and
Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat today held talks that
were expected to focus on the Israels plan for a
delayed implementation of the Wye river accord. Their
meeting in the Mediterranean port of Alexandria came two
days after Israeli Premier Ehud Barak discussed the plan
with Mr Mubarak in the same city. No statement was issued
after the meeting.
Military spares
WASHINGTON,
July 31 (PTI) Under severe pressure from Congress
where an overwhelming majority supports Taiwan against
China, the Clinton administration has released military
spare parts worth $ 150 million to Taipei. The spare
parts package includes parts for Taiwans F-16 and
F-5 jet fighters, C-130 transport aircraft and an
indigenous fighter.
Plane crash
MARINE CITY
(Michigan), July 31 (Reuters) A twin-engine
aircraft carrying as many as 10 skydivers crashed and
burst into flames near Detroit shortly after takeoff
today morning, killing possibly all on board, the police
said. The state police said it was not aware of any
survivors. However, WWJ-Radio said up to four persons may
have survived the fiery crash about 1 km from the
airport.
