From Our Sports Reporter

AMRITSAR, July 31 — The Indian Hockey Federation chief Mr K.P.S. Gill today announced two separate teams to tour for twin teams of South Africa and Kenya and Zimbabwe during August next month. Briefing newsmen after the completion of the fortnight-long camp at the Guru Nanak Dev University hockey sports complex and in the presence of national selectors, IHF president said that two-team concept was to provide international exposure to all the incumbents in the bid to select the 2000 Olympic squad.

Mr Gill said that the ‘A’ team led by Mohamad Riaz of Indian Airlines which would tour South Africa for a five-test series beginning on August 12 while the ‘B’ team captained by Rajesh Chauhan of Air-India would participate in the four-nation tournament including, Kenya, Zimbabwe and South Africa besides India, being played in Zimbabwe from August 23. Each team comprises 16 players.

The IHF chief added that V. Bhaskaran, the national chief coach, and Ramesh Parameshwaran would accompany the ‘A’ team while Balwinder Singh of the Railways and Surjit Kumar to be the coaches for the ‘B’ team.

Commenting on the exclusion of former Indian captain Dhanraj Pillai and mercurial forward Mukesh Kumar, Mr Gill said that both of them had been rested due to their fitness problems and would be included in the team for the Lal Bahadur Shastri International Hockey Tournament to be held in October this year.

About hockey ties with Pakistan, the IHF supremo pointed out that there was no question of not inviting their arch Asian rival and neighbour from visiting India during the Lal Bahadur Shastri tournament matches. He would wish them to visit India.

He said India favoured a prefect techinque blending the Indian traditional hockey style and speed of some European countries.

The main focus for the selection of the both teams had been ‘physical fitness’. The coaches and other officials had been maintaining their health records which had determined the selections from the 44 probables which took part in camps held at Amritsar and Chandigarh. He expressed his satisfaction over the trials and team selections for the forthcoming twin African tours.

Mr Gill added that while the ‘A’ team after visit to South Africa would play in the Australia for the four-nation tournament to be held in September while the ‘B’ team would compete in the Lal Bahadur Shastri Championships in October. The best boys would finally be chosen from these two teams for taking part in the Asian championships to be held in November before starting preparations for the Olympics next year. Indian players at the moment were highly paid, he said adding that they enjoyed same facilities as provided to teams from other rich and developed countries.

The team for South Africa: Edward Aloysisus (PSB) and Jude Menezes (Mumbai) both goal-keepers, Anuraj Rajuvanshi (UP), Lazarus Barla (Indian Airlines) and Dinesh Nayak (TN), all three full backs.

The half line comprises of Baljit Saini (PSB), Thirumalava (TN) Mohammed Riaz (captain IA), Ramandeep Singh (Punjab) and Kamal Horo (Services).

The forwards line will have Brojan Singh (IA), Deepak Thaour (AI), Gagan Ajit Singh (AI), Baljit Dhillon (Punjab), L. Prabakaran (TN) and Samir Dad (IA).

Senthel (TN) Cyprian Anid (Services), Rajesh Chauhan (Captain AI), Ajinder Pal Singh (Railways), Ravinder Singh (IA) and Y.S. Rawat (IA).Top

Confederations Cup

Brazil, USA move into last four

GUADALAJARA (Mexico), July 31 (AP) — Ben Olsen and Joe-Max Moore scored goals last night to lead the USA to a 2-0 victory over Germany and into the semifinals of the Confederations Cup soccer tournament.

Olsen took a pass from Marcelo Balboa in the 23rd minute and shot it to the left of goalkeeper Jens Lehmann. In the 49th minute, Moore drove a free kick into the top right corner of the goal.

Brazil beat New Zealand 2-0 last night to finish first in the Guadalajara group and setting up a semifinal clash with Saudi Arabia in Guadalajara tomorrow.

The Americans have only one day to travel to Mexico City and prepare for a semifinal tomorrow against Mexico, the top team in the Mexico City group. The final will be played on Wednesday in Mexico City.

It was also a rough game, and referee Gilberto Alcala doled out seven yellow cards, four to the Germans.

The Americans played without many of their usual starters, saving players for the semifinals.

The USA showed surprising strength against Germany, traditionally one of the world’s best teams. The Americans upset the Germans 3-0 in February in Florida, and many had said another loss to the Americans would be humiliating.

Before an impatient crowd that turned on a lacklustre Brazilian team, Marcos Paulo and Ronaldinho helped Brazil coast to a half-hearted 2-0 win over New Zealand last night.

Marcos Paulo made an unexpected shot from afar in the 44th minute that sailed over the head of goalkeeper Michael Utting and into the net. And Ronaldinho fired a free kick to the right of the goal in 87th minute.

Brazil had already qualified for the Confederations Cup semifinals, and New Zealand had already been eliminated.

Brazil played without some of their normal starters, including Odvan, Serginho and Vampeta; Ronaldinho entered only into the second half. Brazil also played without their usual fire, and for much of the game didn’t seem much better than New Zealand, hardly a soccer stronghold.

New Zealand thanked the crowd by running a lap around the field after the game.

“I’m proud of having played against Brazil,” said new Zealand coach Ken Dugdale. “Brazil is Brazil, and they scored two marvellous goals.”Top

Pan Am Games

Brazil outpace Canada in relay

WINNIPEG, July 31 (Reuters) — Brazil’s anchor man Andre Domingos Da Silva blasted away from Canada’s Trevino Betty in the final leg of the 4x100-metre relay to claim Pan Am Games gold yesterday.

The Brazilians covered the distance in a time of 38.18 seconds, the second fastest in the world this year.

Not even 9,100 screaming Canadian fans and an impressive lead-off performance from former 100-metre world record-holder Donovan Bailey was enough to get Canada’s vaunted relay team across the finish line first.

With a time of 38.49 seconds, Canada settled for silver ahead of the Jamaican squad, who clocked 38.82.

Canada lost ground to Brazil on the third exchange of the baton between newcomer Brad McCuaig and Betty.

Brazil’s foursome also included Raphael Oliveira at lead-off, followed by Claudinei Silva and Edson Rebeiro.

Bailey, who is coming back from surgery on his left achilles tendon 10 months ago, said his performance proved he is back in winning form.

In preparation for the world championships, where he expects to run the 100 metres as well as the relay, Bailey will race in London, Cologne, and Zurich.

Canada has never won the Pan American Games relay. Nine of the 12 previous Pan American Games relay victories have gone to the USA who finished fourth in a time of 39:00.

Cuba was the victor at the last two games but did not make it to last night’s final after dropping the baton in Wednesday’s qualifier.

Bailey has been under relentless fire from the Canadian media and some athletes this week for accepting a six-figure sum from games organisers to promote the games, then deciding to skip the opening ceremony and the 100 metres.

The Canadians predict they will retain their world relay title in Spain with Bruny Surin back in the mix.

Surin, who has clocked some of the fastest times in the world this year, passed on the Pan American Games in order to prepare for the world championships.

Bailey proclaimed that in Spain he would be running the anchor leg and that the team who won Olympic gold in Atlanta, would run “as fast as in ’96.”

AP adds: If Cuba’s baseball squad fails to win a gold at the Pan American Games, their athletics team will more than have made up for it.

Led by a fourth title in the high jump by Javier Sotomayor, the first person ever to win an athletics medal in four straight games, Cuba closed its campaign with five golds last night and won sport’s gold race for a third consecutive time.

But by winning both sprint hurdles finals — each in Pan American Games record times, the women’s 1,600-metre relay and the men’s triple jump, Cuba finished with 11 golds and beat their rivals the USA, who failed to win any in 10 events yesterday and finished with 10 gold.Top

Pak for better deal to play in Sharjah

ISLAMABAD, July 31 (PTI) — Pakistan are planning to pull out from the Sharjah cricket tournament this October if they do not get a better financial deal from the organisers and are seeking to join hands with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to make a joint effort for a better deal.

Disclosing this, a senior member of the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) ad hoc committee has said the cricketers benefit fund series (CBFS), tournament organisers at the Gulf outpost, have offered only a “token amount” to Pakistan despite signing a lucrative television rights deal recently.

“The CBFS has signed a $ 25 million contract with TWI (Trans World International), but is paying just $ 225,000 to Pakistan, which is peanuts. We strongly object to this and are seriously considering to pull out of the Sharjah tournament in protest”, he was quoted as saying by the English daily “The Dawn”.

He said the PCB will try to enlist the support of the BCCI officials as “India will also be getting the same amount”.

It was the participation of India and Pakistan that has enabled CBFS to sell TV rights at such high rates and hence both countries should be given a fair share from it, he said.

The PCB official said Pakistani cricketers have also complained about the poor treatment they get in Sharjah from the CBFS officials.

The official said the PCB was ready to fight a legal battle if CBFS goes to court on grounds of violating the contract. “We will have to pay the damage, we will pay them but will not allow anyone to toy with us.”

“The days when the CBFS used to dictate terms are over. We mean business”, he said.

The PCB has signed a deal with the CBFS for playing in Sharjah at least once a year till 2000.

The entire PCB management was dissolved on July 16 by the President, Mr Mohammad Rafiq Tarar, and an ad hoc body appointed to look after cricket in Pakistan.Top

Sahara ‘amazed’ at Dalmiya’s remarks

NEW DELHI, July 31 (UNI) — Sahara India Pariwar, which backed out from hosting the Indo-Pak cricket tournament at Toronto this September in the wake of the Kargil conflict, has made it clear that the company did not have second thoughts on the decision.

“We shall definitely not go for it (Sahara Cup) and I humbly request everybody not to create pressure on us,’’ company chairman Subrata Roy said responding to Indian cricket council president Jagmohan Dalmiya’s recent statement that India and Pakistan should not snap cricketing ties when diplomatic and communication links between them still existed.

“We are certainly amazed at Mr Dalmiya’s comments on Sahara,’’ he said referring to July 29 newspaper reports citing Mr Dalmiya as saying that Sahara went out of turn by announcing cancellation of the event.

In a statement here, Mr Roy said his company was “extremely pained’’ over Mr Dalmiya reportedly saying that “probably Sahara was talking beyond its ambit’’.

“Could it be out of anybody’s ambit to mourn for the people who have died by clearly giving us the definition of true love towards their countrymen? It is unfortunate that a responsible personality like Mr Dalmiya has publicly expressed such thoughts,’’ the Sahara chairman observed.

Maintaining that organising cricket tourneys meant entertainment and lucre unlike maintaining bilateral ties, he said: “Sahara shall be most benefited commercially if the Cup is played as it would amount to Kargil cricket war and will be watched by each and every person in our country. But we shall definitely not go for it.’’Top

No ‘witch-hunting’, says Pak govt

ISLAMABAD, July 31 (PTI) — The Pakistan government has given an assurance that there would not be any “witch hunt” during the probe into betting and match-fixing allegations against some of the country’s leading cricketers.

Information and Sports Minister, Mushahid Hussain, told the Senate yesterday that the issue will be dealt in keeping with the law after leader of the opposition and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) member Aitzaz Ahsan alleged that players were being harassed over the investigations.

Ahsan raised a point of order challenging jurisdiction of the anti-corruption Ehtesab (accountability) Bureau to go into the betting and match-fixing allegations.

Only those holding public office came under the purview of the accountability law. “It is deplorable to see how sporting heroes of the nation are being hounded by the Ehtesab Bureau,” he told the Senate.

Hussain lauded the national team for reaching the final of the World Cup. “There should not be any witch-hunt,” he said adding that the Pakistani society had an element of “extremism” and defeat was not accepted with grace.

Skipper Wasim Akram and senior teammates Salim Malik and Ijaz Ahmed have been suspended over betting and match-fixing allegations and have been questioned elaborately by the EB.

Akram refused to say anything on the ongoing inquiry. When told that cricket lovers in India were concerned about the match-fixing allegations against him, Akram told PTI that people in Pakistan were also concerned about the whole issue.Top

Akram denies charges

ISLAMABAD, July 31 (PTI) —Suspended Pakistan cricket captain Wasim Akram was yesterday closely questioned by investigators inquiring into match-fixing and betting charges even as he denied all charges against him besides declaring his assets and properties in a written statement.

Akram, who led Pakistan to the World Cup final last month, was questioned for more than three hours by officials of the anti-corruption Ehtesab (accountability) Bureau here during which he repeatedly denied match-fixing charges and submitted an eight-page statement to this effect where he also gave details of his assets in Pakistan and abroad, according to sources close to Akram.

Akram and Ijaz Ahmed, who is also named in this regard, have been here for the last three days and have been questioned by the EB officials though both have avoided making any comment in the media, obviously on instructions from EB.

Ijaz Ahmed, who was questioned for more than four hours yesterday, has termed his suspension as “unilateral” and threatened to go to court over the issue.Top

Paes-Bjorkman duo crashes out in last eight

LOS ANGELES, July 31 (PTI) — India’s top tennis player Leander Paes and his Swedish partner Jonas Bjorkman crashed out of the Mercedes Benz Cup ATP Tour tournament here when they lost to Martin Damn of Czech Republic and Adam Pederson of the USA in the quarterfinals.

Paes, world’s top ranked doubles player, and Bjorkman went down to the Czech-American combinaton in a hard-fought three set match 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in the $ 325,000 tournament here yesterday.

Paes was playing in the ATP Tour event with the Swede as his regular partner Mahesh Bhupathi is recovering from an abdominal injury sustained during their successful campaign at the Wimbledon championships last month.

Bhupathi, who missed events at Stuttgart and Istanbul besides the Mercedes Benz Cup, is expected to join the tour at Cincinatti later next month.

Paes, ranked 129th in the singles, had earlier made a first round exit from the singles when he succumbed to unheralded Eric Taino of the USA on Tuesday.Top

Greene blazes to 100 m victory

STOCKHOLM, July 31 (AP) — Just imagine how fast Maurice Greene would have run had his friend been in the race.

Greene, the world’s fastest human being, blazed to a 9.87 seconds win in the same Olympic Stadium where fellow American Donald Lippincott set one of the earliest 100 metres records of 10.6 seconds in the 1912 summer games.

Trinidad’s Ato Boldon, second fastest behind Greene this year, saw his training partner from the sidelines yesterday, out of the race with a muscle strain.

Competing in virtually no wind, Greene was just eight-hundredths of a second off the world record he set last month in Athens, Greece.

“Without Ato here tonight to push me, I’m particularly pleased with how I stepped up my game and pushed myself to this kind of time,” Greene said.

“With Ato in the race, the competition would have been even stiffer and then who knows what might have happened.”

In addition to prize and appearance money, Greene earned diamond valued at $ 10,000 for breaking his own Olympic Stadium record of 9.90 seconds set last year.

“I suppose with this many diamonds I should think of moving to (the diamond trade center) Rotterdam in Holland,” Greene said.

Obadele Thompson of Barbados was second behind Greene in 9.96 seconds and Jon Drummond, also one of Greene’s training partners, was third.

Boldon ran a 9.86 seconds in Athens, the fifth-fastest time in history, when Greene broke the world record.

The world’s two fastest sprinters may get another chance to face each other on Monday in Malmo, southern Sweden. Both are scheduled to compete in the 100 metres in that meet.

Michael Johnson, the double 1996 Olympic champion, abandoned the 400-metre race after about 100 metres, apparently pulling a right thigh muscle. Jerome Young, another American, won the race in 44.64 seconds.Top

Milov wins Biel chess crown

BIEL(Switzerland), July 31 (PTI) — Top seed grandmaster Vadim Milov of Switzerland annexed the Biel International Open Chess title by beating GM Yehudo Grunfeld of Israel in the final here, while only two Indians could manage to figure in the prize list.

Krishnan Sasikiran (6.5 - 20th position) and D V Prasad (6.5 - 25th) were the only Indians among the seven-player team who earned cash prizes as rest five returned empty handed.

Milov, who along with fellow GMs Grunfeld, Rufat Bagirov of Azerbijan and Rashkovsky of Russia, made it to the semifinals after the ninth round, as per the new format, scored an impressive win over his Israeli opponent.

Rashkovsky finished third in the overall standings while Bagirov came fourth. There was a tie for the fifth to seventh place between GM Volkov, IMs Cheriev and Tyomkin — all with 7.5 points.

The Indian players did not have a very good day as none of them was able to register a win in the 11th and final round with S Kidambi’s 10-game IM norm being the only silver lining.

K. Sasikiran and fellow IMs Abhijit Kunte and D V Prasad were forced to share the point after a battle while V. Saravanan agreed for a quick draw against Florian Handke of Germany from white side of closed Sicilian.

Junior national champion Kidambi and IWM Anupama Gokhale lost their final games to veteran Swiss Ivannemet and Saud Mohamed of the UAE, respectively.

Sasikiran, Prasad and Kunte (26th) finished with 6.5 points while Kidambi (29th), Saravanan (35th) and Thipsay (38th) had six points each. Anupama Gokhale (84th) finished with a poor tally of 3.5 points.

Sasikiran was held to a draw by IM Michaelevski of Israel in which the Indian employed the queen’s gambit and the Israeli countered with the Tartakover variation.

The encounter between GM norm holder and former national champion D. V. Prasad and IM Raetsky of Russia also ended in a draw after a hard fought battle.

Raetsky chose the Catalan opening and Prasad countered ambitiously by grabbing a pawn in a desperate bid to seize the initiative. Both players sacrificed material and after the tactical skirmish an equal minor piece ending was reached forcing the duo to split the point after 35 moves.Top

Sampras, Agassi enter semis

LOS ANGELES, July 31 (Reuters) — Top-seeded and defending champion Andre Agassi and second-seeded Pete Sampras took different paths yesterday but both American stars continued their torrid summer pace on Friday by reaching the semifinals of the $ 350,000 Mercedes-Benz Cup tennis tournament.

Agassi was credited with a victory in the night card when seventh-seeded teenage prodigy Lleyton Hewitt of Australia suffered a sprained left ankle while ahead 5-4 in the opening set. Sampras, meanwhile, shrugged off a first-set loss to dispatch Wayne Ferreira of South Africa 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.

“It was high-quality tennis with the potential of only getting better,” said Agassi, who is 16-1 over his last 17 matches. “It was good, there was a lot of tennis to be played out there.”

Agassi was serving at 5-4, 15-all when he pushed a deft drop shot that Hewitt attempted to run down from the backcourt but turned the left ankle and dropped to the court in writhing pain for nearly 10 minutes while ATP tour trainer and tournament doctor worked on him.

He finally got up under his own power and walked to the chair but after warming up for several minutes decided to call it a night.

Agassi, the reigning French Open champion, and Sampras, a six-time Wimbledon titleholder, will try to set up a showdown for Sunday’s final but the two must first get past an unlikely Australian duo at the UCLA hardcourts.

Sampras, who notched his 15th straight match win, will face unheralded qualifier James Sekulov after the 236th-ranked player bounced 1996 champion Michael Chang 2-6, 6-2, 6-2.

Agassi, meanwhile, will tangle with Andre Ilie, who rallied past French qualifier Anthony Dupuis 6-7, (6-8), 6-4, 6-4.

“He’s a charismatic player who brings enthusiasm to the game,” said Agassi of Ilie. “He can hit some incredible shots. It will be one of those sensitive matches for me where I shouldn’t try to do more than I need to do.”

Should Sampras get through, he will regain the world No 1 ranking and pass Ivan Lendl as the all-time record holder with 271 weeks as the top player.

“That’s not my motivation when I step on court,” Sampras said. “My idea is how I’m going to play this guy and play well. I can’t go out thinking about Sunday or the ranking. You can’t. I’ve been playing this game to look too far ahead.”

Ferreira held a 5-4 career edge, including the last four times wins. After losing the opening set, the South African was in position to make it five in a row. However, the 12-time Grand Slam titleholder showed his form in the next two sets.

“This is by far the best I’ve played,’’ said Sampras, who hit nine aces and broke service four times in the match.

There were hopes Chang would join Agassi and Sampras in the semifinals for the first time since the ATP tour stop San Jose in 1998. But that was dashed by Sekulov, who intended to a week-long holiday but finds himself in his first semifinal.

UMAG (Croatia) (AP): Magnus Norman of Sweden ousted top-seeded Carlos Moya of Spain 6-2, 7-6 (10-8) in the quarterfinals of the Croatia Open ATP tournament on Friday.

Norman, seeded eighth, won five games in a row in taking a 6-2, 1-0 lead. Moya recovered in the second set, but not enough to beat Norman.

In another surprise, third-seeded Dominik Hrbaty of Slovakia was beaten 6-0, 6-7, (4-7), 6-4 by 20-year-old Croat Ivan Ljubicic.

The semifinal match against Norman will be the first for Ljubicic in an ATP tour event.

Tension was also evident during the match between Jeff Tarango and fourth-seeded Francisco Clavet, as the two apparently exchanged insults during the match and didn’t shake hands at the end of Tarango’s 7-5, 5-7, 6-2 victory.

STANFORD (AP): Lindsay Davenport recorded yet another remarkable feat on Friday during a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Cornia Morariu in the quarterfinals of the Bank of the West Classic.

Davenport, the world’s top-ranked female tennis player, recorded four aces in the same game.

“I guess I would have remembered something like that if it happened before,” said Davenport, who needed just over an hour to beat her doubles partner. “That’s a milestone, I guess.”

The four consecutive aces — Morariu didn’t win a point in the game — occurred in the third game of the second set and gave Davenport a 2-1 edge. She went on to break Morariu’s serve and never looked back.

“I served better and made more first serves,” said Davenport, who won her first two Grand Slam events after winning the Bank of the West Classic last year. “I felt a lot more in the flow of things, more in control of my shots.”Top
