Campus beat
Evaluation delays BA (II) results
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, Aug 2—The declaration of BA (Part II) results of Panjab University is hanging fire on account of delay in evaluation of answersheets of the sociology papers. The university has completed evaluation of about half of the 4,300 answersheets and the remaining have been sent for evaluation.

But for this subject, the remaining result of BA II has been prepared a week back and is waiting to be declared once the awards for the subject come in.

The university authorities attribute the delay in evaluation work to the increased number of candidates who have opted for the subject because of its popularity with the students taking the civil services examination. However, the number of teachers has not increased with the rising number of candidates. Hence, it poses a problem when evaluation work is to be undertaken.

Sources in the examination branch added that the evaluators who had initially come to check the papers left when they saw only a handful of evaluators. Efforts are being made to get the answersheets evaluated and teachers are being drawn from the Department of Sociology for the purpose.

Though the university is hopeful of getting evaluation work completed in a couple of days, the compilation of the result will take another four days. This implies that the results can be declared only after a week.

Results declared: The university today declared the results of B Sc (three-year degree course) physical education, health education and sports, third year, M Com, fourth semester, Masters in Personnel Management and Industrial Relations, fourth semester and MA II (fine arts) examinations.

Copies of the gazette will be available at the new enquiry building from August 3 onwards during office hours on all working days.

Awarded: Dr AK Bakshi, Department of Chemistry, has been awarded the Chemical Research Society of India (CRSI) medal in recognition of his outstanding contribution to chemistry. He will be given this award at the forthcoming meeting of the Society at Hyderabad in January next year.

Dr Bakshi has won worldwide recognition for his contributions in the field of polymers with special reference to electricity conducting polymers and biopolymers.

Interviews: The admission test and interviews for M Phil in the Department of political science will be held on August 11. The essay test will begin at 9.30 a m, the objective test at 11 a m and the interviews will be held at 2.30 p m.

The date of interviews for admission to various courses of Tibetan and Chinese has been rescheduled to August 13 while the last date of receipt of admission forms has been extended to August 10. The interviews will be held in the Department of Central Asian Studies.Back

Consumer Courts
Notice to AC company
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, Aug 2 — The UT Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum-I has issued notice to the Managing Director, Gossons Airconditioners, SAS Nagar, for supplying a defective airconditioner to a customer.

The complainant, Monika Communication Centre, through its counsel contended that it had purchased an AC for Rs 19,900 but since its installation, it had been giving trouble and the cooling was not up to the mark.

It further added that when it made a complaint to the company on the telephone, it sent a serviceman to check the machine. On inspection, a match box was found inside the AC which caused improper cooling. After a few days the AC again started giving trouble. However, the defect was not set right despite several calls and visits to the firm.

Counsel pointed out that there was no manufacturing registered trademark on the AC which confirmed the doubt that it was not original.

The defect in the AC has still not be corrected even though the complainant has served a legal notice on the respondent.

Tyre co. to refund

The UT Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum-II has directed Ceat tyre company and his dealer to refund Rs 95 as the price of the tube along with consolidated costs of Rs 250 for their failure to replace a defective tube.

The complainant, Mr R.K. Singh, has stated that he had purchased a rubber tube of Ceat make for his motor cycle on July 27, 1997, from Singh Cycle and Auto Industries at Rs 95 with a replacement guarantee against the manufacturing defect.

He alleged that the tube got punctured on April 7, 1997, and the repairer informed him that the nozzle of the tube was defective. He then reported the defect to the dealer, who in turn asked him to contact the manufacturer for immediate replacement.

The complainant thereupon on April 10, 1997, asked the manufacturer to replace the tube against the guarantee given to him. But the manufacturer refused to do so on the ground that ''there was no manufacturing defect''. The complainant pointed out that at the time of purchase, the dealer had assured him that in case of displacement of the nozzle or leakage of joints of the tube, the tube would be replaced.

A notice was served on the company but since no one filed a reply, the case was proceeded against ex parte.

The forum Bench comprising its President R.P. Bajaj, and members H.S. Walia and Kamlesh Gupta held the manufacturer and the dealer guilty of gross deficiency in service for unnecessarily harassing the consumer by not replacing the defective tube.

While allowing the complaint, they observed that the case of the complainant stood proved from the evidence in support of his version. Back
