LUDHIANA
Ban orders:
Mr Arun Goel, District Magistrate, has imposed a ban on the use of loudspeakers in the district keeping in view the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections in the state. An order to this effect was issued under Section 144 Cr PC and will come into force from August 3 and will be effective till October 1.

PHAGWARA
Tree plantation:
Mr Pritam Singh, SDM, launched a sapling plantation drive here on Sunday. The drive was organised jointly by local Environment Association and Bharat Vikas Parishad. He planted saplings in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar. Mr Kirk Leech, Joint Director, International Educational Youth Charity, a UK-based NGO, stressed the need to plant more trees.

SAMRALA
Meeting:
A meeting of the Congress workers and office-bearers of Samrala Block, was held here at the Mansarovar Flour Mill, under the chairmanship of Dr Yogesh Sharma on Sunday. The members demanded immediate release of Mr Amrik Singh Dhillon, Congress MLA, who had allegedly been falsely implicated in a fertiliser subsidy case. The speakers said Mr Dhillon had left the directorship of the fertiliser company in 1992 and he was being falsely implicated due to the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections. They threatened to give a call for Samrala bandh if Mr Dhillon was not released immediately.

Birth anniversary: Members of the Chandigarh Territorial Mahila Congress Committee celebrated the birth anniversary of Ms Kamla Nehru here on Monday. Ms Pushpa Sharma, Vice-President, CTC, paid rich tributes to Ms Kamla Nehru. Bhajan were also sung.

Kavi darbar: The Punjab Kavi Mandal, in collaboration with the North Zone Cultural Centre will organise Sawan Kavi Darbar at the Sector 41 Shivalik Public School August 7. Eminent poets from Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh will participate. Ms Rajneesh Goyal, a poetess, will be felicitated.

Rally: Ms Bimla Sapna, President of the local unit of the Bahujan Samaj Party (Ambedkar), organised a rally in Sector 25 and assailed the administration for not paying attention towards the upkeep and maintenance of basic services in the labour colonies and slums. She said because of this discrimination, her party had decided to contest the Chandigarh Lok Sabha seat in the ensuing elections.

KAITHAL
Electrocuted:
Two persons were electrocuted on Sunday. Two farmers of Dera Joga Singh were working in their fields when a wooden pole having electricity wires fell on Raghbir Singh (32) and when his brother Baldev Singh (35) rushed to help him, he too was electrocuted. The Dera residents said they had requested the HVPN authorities repeatedly to replace the temporary wooden pole with a permanent one but all in vain. The villagers blamed the HVPN for the tragedy.

SONEPAT
Camp:
A 13-day welfare camp for the handicapped persons, concluded here on Sunday. The camp was organised by the Bhagwan Mahavira Handicapped Aid Samiti, in collaboration with the District Red Cross Society, Lala Morari Lal Mool Chand Jain Charitable Trust, K. Sikandarpur Majra village and the Handicapped Seva Samiti at Aggarwal Dharamsala here to provide artificial limbs free of cost to handicapped and disabled persons. The Samiti spent about Rs 20 lakh on the artificial limbs and other aids given to the handicapped and disabled persons during the camp. In all 2,036 handicapped persons were examined.

Shot dead: Mr Har Dayal, a resident of Mangolpuri village (Delhi), was allegedly shot dead by two motor cycle-borne youths near Kakana village, about 25 km from here, on Sunday. The victim along with his wife, was returning to Delhi from Khanpur Kalan village in the district. The police has registered a case.

Assaulted: A Junior Engineer of the Irrigation Department was allegedly assaulted by a group of farmers when he prevented them from stealing the canal water. The jeep driver of the JE also sustained injuries in the assault. The injured JE has lodged an FIR with the police against two youths, including a son of a former sarpanch of Kheri Damkan village, in this connection.

Suicide: A youngman, Satyavan, allegedly committed suicide by consuming insecticide tablets at his house in Bhatgaon village, about 15 km from here, on Sunday. Domestic discord is said to be the reason for this extreme step taken by him.

Killed: An unidentified beggar was knocked down and killed by a canter here on Sunday.top

Ex-servicemen:
The Mandi ARTRAC CSD Canteen will hold its circuit on the 16th of every month at the PWD Rest House here. Capt. Mohinder Singh, president of the local unit of the Ex-Servicemen League has welcomed the decision of providing CSD facilities to the defence personnel here and said it would be in the interest of ex-servicemen and serving personnel of the near by subdivisions. Over 200 families of ex-servicemen will be benefited by this decision.
