Open darbar: As many as 623 cases were settled at an open darbar at Rasina village of Pundri sub-tehsil on Wednesday. The Deputy Commissioner, Dr Mahavir Singh presided. The SP, Mr K.K. Sharma, and other district officials were also present.

Office-bearers:

Lok Adalat:
A Lok Adalat for setting financial disputes was held here on Thursday. The Deputy Commissioner, Mr Jasbir Singh Bir, presided.

PHAGWARA
Freedom fighters:
The Punjab Freedom Fighters Council submitted a memorandum to Punjab Finance Minister Kanwaljit Singh here on Thursday demanding a probe into the bogus cases of pension being availed by certain persons. A probe has been sought into it.

Salaries not paid: A deputation of college teachers on Thursday urged Punjab Finance Minister Kanwaljit Singh to expedite the release of grants to affiliated non-government colleges since they had not got their salaries for the past six months.

Municipal committee:
Mr Dharam Pal has been elected President of the municipal committee at a meeting of all municipal commissioners of Khamanon Nagar Panchayat held here on Thursday.

Confederation: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Punjab State Pensioners Confederation: President — Mr Prem Sagar Sharma; and General Secretary — Mr Ajit Singh Bagri.

SONEPAT
Camp:
About 160 students and lecturers of the local Hindu College, members of the NCC, NSS, district Red Cross Society and Bharat Scouts and Guides donated their blood at a blood donation camp organised at Hindu College here on Thursday.

Mill gutted: A textile mill near here was gutted in a devastating fire on Thursday. The fire broke out when an electric machine produced sparks as a worker started it. The worker sustained burns.

Bodies found: A youth was run over by a New Delhi-bound Shatabdi train at a railway crossing near Hindu College here on Thursday. According to another report, the Ganaur police recovered the body of an unidentified youth from GT Road, 20 km from here on Thursday.

Death mourned: As a mark of respect to practising advocate Niranjan Singh, who died of cardiac arrest last evening, the second half of the day was observed as a holiday in the Sector 17 district courts here. Only urgent legal matters, including regular and anticipatory bail applications, and stay applications, were taken up.

Seminar held: The Accountant-General, Punjab, organised a seminar relating to sales tax here on Friday. Issues relating to evasion of sales tax, ways and means to plug leakage of revenue and effects of various concessions and exemptions on the state’s economy were discussed. The seminar was presided over by Mr Sudhir Mittal, Excise and Taxation Commissioner, Punjab.

SAS NAGAR
First position:
Manjit Singh, a student of the National Institute of Technology here has bagged the first position in the final year examination for radio and TV mechanic trade of the Punjab State Board of Technical Education and Industrial Training, Punjab, held in July this year. The Principal of the Institute, Mr Daya Singh, said Manjit secured 82.3 per cent marks in the trade.

Demolished: On the fourth day of the demolition drive launched by the enforcement staff of the Punjab Urban Planning and Development Authority, 30 temporary structures erected at unauthorised taxi stands in different phases in the town were demolished on Friday.

Dharna: The dharna by the Godrej-GE Employees Union in support of its demand entered its 31st day here on Friday. Mr Vikas Sharma, General Secretary of the union, alleged that the management of the company was indulging in unfair trade practice.

Kirtan darbar: The Gurudwara Singh Sabha Committee and residents of Sector 70 are organising a kirtan darbar in the sector on November 5, according to Mr Hardeep Singh, a member of the SGPC, here on Friday. top

AMBALA
Community centre: A community centre is being built in Ambala City at a cost of Rs 55 lakh. The Deputy Commissioner, Mr Ram Niwas, said the centre would have a multipurpose hall where indoor games, meetings could be organised . The centre would be inaugurated on December 4.

FATEHABAD
Poppy husk:
The police here has seized 10 quintals of poppy husk from three persons in the district and arrested them under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. This was stated by the SSP, Mr S.S. Deswal.

HISAR
Power theft:
The Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam has detected 616 cases of power thefts in Hisar and Fatehabad districts during November and imposed penalties amounting to Rs 23.38 lakh on persons involved. A campaign to recover arrears of bills is also being planned.

PANIPAT
Dharna:
The striking advocates of the district Bar Association on Thursday staged a dharna in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner and submitted a memorandum to him. They were protesting against the non-acceptance of their demands.

Indefinite fast: Employees of the Panipat Cooperative Sugar Mill went on an indefinite fast on Wednesday in support of their demands. They stated that the employees of the six other cooperative sugar mills in the state had already been paid bonus , but they had not been given any bonus despite a promise.

SIRSA
Automatic exchange: An electronic private bureau automatic exchange was set up at the office of the district police chief on Thursday. It will have two numbers 23075 and 20456 which would enable the public to get information from any police office in the district.

Suspended: The district police chief has suspended two policemen for consuming liquor while on duty. A departmental inquiry has been ordered into the case.

Fire:
Property worth Rs 1.50 lakh was reportedly destroyed in a devastating fire which engulfed a cloth merchant's shop at Jhandutta Bazar on Wednesday. The cause of the fire was not known. The Tehsildar, Jhandutta, gave Rs 5000 as immediate relief.
Jalandhar

Criticised: The Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers Union has criticised the non-issuance of salary grants by the Finance Department leading to non-payment of salaries to the college staff during the past six months. In a press note issued here on Thursday, Dr V.K. Tiwari, General Secretary of the organisation, said the union would organise students' awareness camps and hold a three-period strike on December 10.

Two killed: Vijay Goel (50) of Jalandhar Cantonment was killed when he was hit by a vehicle near Janata Hospital on Jalandhar-Pathankot bypass on Wednesday. In another incident, Dharam Pal (58) of Gobind Nagar, Basti Guzan, here was run over by a train near Suranussi railway station on Wednesday.
