Road
widening work gathers pace DERA BASSI, Dec 6 Work on the widening of the Dera Bassi-Bhankharpur road via Mubarikpur has gathered momentum. This 3-km stretch of road will take a heavy load of traffic since it will serve as a diversion on the Ambala-Kalka highway till an overbridge at the Bhankharpur railway crossing is completed. Traffic on the highway will be diverted to this road from near DAV School. The road has been repaired and made fit for heavy traffic. All electrical and telephone poles have been shifted. The overbridge is expected to be completed by next year. A major bottleneck, a narrow bridge, is being overcome with the construction of an additional temporary bridge, parallel to the existing one. According to sources in the company, which has undertaken the project, the old bridge is not capable of taking the heavy traffic, besides being too narrow for the movement of two-way traffic. The new bridge will be 20 meters long, and 10 meters wide. The level of the low bridge near DAV School, which can prove another traffic bottleneck, is being raised to the level of the other bridge. Construction of the overbridge will start in the last week of this month. The project, including
the 2-km- long overbridge, is being supervised by the
Punjab Public Works Department (B&R). According to
PWD sources, the total cost of the overbridge will be Rs
35.73 crore. |
