AMRITSAR
Annual function:
Mr Sarabjit Singh, DGP, has exhorted students to fight against the social evils which had cast its shadow on the culture of India. Speaking at the annual winter festival of the local Guru Tegh Bahadur College for Women here on Wednesday the DGP said it was for the youth to bring about a change in the society. Earlier, the students presented a cultural show. The Principal of the college, Mr Nanak Singh, read the report of the college and welcomed the chief guest.

FAZILKA
Lawyers' strike:
Striking members of the Bar Association here have decided to extend their four day-old strike till December 20, to pressurise the Punjab Government not to disintegrate the subdivision. Mr Anil Kumar Jain, President of the association, in a statement issued here on Friday criticised the statement of Mr Ram Kumar Goyal, MLA, Abohar, who had stated that Abohar and some villages of Balluana, which form part of Fazilka subdivision, be merged with Muktsar district.

GURDASPUR
UNESCO aid:
Mr S.K. Sandhu, Deputy Commissioner, briefing newsmen here recently said UNESCO had sanctioned Rs 5 crore for integrated development of three villages — Srihargobindpur, Kishankot and Masanian — all in the jurisdiction of Batala subdivision in this district. Special emphasis would be laid to conserve historical monuments such as Guru ki Massad in Srihargobindpur, the Krishan Temple in Kishankot and the dargah of Baba Shah Badr Diwan at Masanian.

HOSHIARPUR
Lift irrigation system:
The Punjab Government has launched a programme to make proper utilisation of irrigation water to provide irrigation facilities in Kandi, Bet and plain areas of the Hoshiarpur district through pipes, lift irrigation system and water-harvesting tanks. This was stated by Mr Iqbal Singh Sidhu, Deputy Commissioner, here on Friday.

LUDHIANA
Property Act:
The police has registered a case under the Punjab Apartment and Property Regulation Act against Mohan Singh and his associate Balwant Singh, who was entrusted with Mohan Singh's power of attorney allegedly for selling 1,000 square yards of land to various persons, without prior permission or licence.

Award for farmers: Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, will honour an innovative and progressive farmer of Punjab with the Sardar Dalip Singh Dhaliwal Memorial Award on the eve of Kisan Mela in March, 2000. The award carries a cash prize of Rs 5,000 along with a plaque and a citation. Dr Jaspinder Singh Kolar, Director of Extension Education, PAU, has invited bio-data from the farmers who wish to compete for this award. The application forms and other details are available at the offices of the chief agricultural officers and the farm advisory services of the PAU at the district headquarters.

MOGA
Misappropriation of funds:
Naranjan Singh of Budhsinghwala village in a complaint lodged with the police here on Friday said Gurtej Singh of Doda village had misappropriated a sum Rs 48,500. He had given the amount to Gurtej Singh on the assurance that the accused would double it. The suspect has absconded.

NANGAL
Camp:
The Lions Club and the Blood Donors Council, Nawanshahr, organised a blood donation camp here on Friday. It was inaugurated by the Additional Deputy Commissioner, Ropar, Mr Kushiram.

Elected: The following have been elected office-bearers of the local unit of General Category Employees Welfare Association: president — Mr Pawan Kumar Sharma; vice-president — Mr Jaswant Singh; general secretary — Mr K.S. Rana; joint secretary — Mr Munilal; and treasurer — Mr Ramesh Chander Jaswal.

PHAGWARA
Varsity Act:
The action committee-cum-legal cell, Indian Medical Association, Punjab, on Friday demanded immediate amendment in Section 27 (2) of the Baba Farid University of Health Sciences Act, 1998, to pave way for making the vice-chancellor also the chairman of board of management. This practice was followed in other universities. Dr O.P.S Kande and Dr Raman Aggarwal, cell’s chairman and secretary, have urged the Chief Minister, Punjab, that the amendment in the statue was necessary for effective functioning of the university and also for the dignity of the office of the vice-chancellor.

SANGRUR
Attack condemned:
Mr Prem Goyal and Mr Sunil Rail, state President and General Secretary, respectively, of the Punjab Union of Journalists, in a joint statement have demanded that the miscreants who attacked S.K. Mittal, a Khanna-based journalist, at the Courts Complex, Khanna, on November 28, should be arrested immediately. Terming it as an open attack on the freedom of the press, the union condemned the police inaction.

YAMUNANAGAR
Agitation:
The Haryana Rajkiya Adhayapak Sangh has decided to launch a state-wide agitation against the step-motherly treatment of the Haryana Government towards their demands. The district president and the Secretary of the sangh, Mr Mohan Lal Bhardwaj and Mr Pardeep Sareen, respectively in a press note issued here on Friday said permanent teachers along with ad hoc teachers would hold a rally at Sirsa on January 2, 2000 in this regard.

HISAR
Award presented:
Three sociologists, Mrs Nirmal, Dr Deep Punia and Dr R.K. Punia of Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar, have been awarded the Gits Award for the year 1998 for their outstanding research paper published in the Indian Food Packer Journal. The award, carrying a sum of Rs 2,000, a certificate and a citation, was presented to these authors by Mr S. Shahnawaj Hussain, Union Minister of State for Food Processing Industries, at a function organised by the All India Food Preservers Association at New Delhi recently.

ROHTAK
Donation:
The local Bar association has donated an amount of Rs 11,000 as relief for the victims of the super cyclone in Orissa. A cheque of the amount was presented to the Deputy Commissioner by Mr Jeet Singh, a senior member of the association.

SIRSA
Sentenced:
The District and Sessions Judge here has sentenced a poppy husk smuggler to jail for 10 years and a fine of Rs 5 lakh. According to the police, Payre Lal of MC Colony here was arrested on June 1, 1997, while he was carrying 35 kg of poppy husk in his Maruti car (DBA-1299).

Power supply: To meet the growing demand for power in the district the State Government has enhanced the capacity of six power sub-stations while work on two new 33 kv sub-stations is in progress. Besides this, two 33 kv power sub-stations at Rasulpur Theri and Shidanwali villages and three power sub-stations of 132 kv capacity each at Sikandar Pur, Kanjwala and Ellenabad would be set up. This was announced by the Deputy Commissioner, Mr Amit Jha, in a press note released here on Thursday.

Road metalling: The Public Works Department, Haryana, has completed the patch work on 671.46 km of roads in the district during the past six months and 65 km of patch work on roads will be completed by the end of the current financial year, this was stated by the Deputy Commissioner, Mr Amit Jha, on Friday.

BILASPUR
Seminar:
At a largely attended one-day camp and seminar, which was held under aegis of the Manav Seva Sansthan at Barthin, 42 kms from here on Wednesday speakers demanded that the Government should frame a policy for reducing liquor shops in the State. Among the speakers were leaders of mahila mandals from the area. The camp and seminar was organised by the district Information and Public Relations Department.

CHAMBA
Memorandum:
The Chamera Oustees Welfare Committee has submitted a memorandum to the Himachal Pradesh Government to get their demands accepted by December 26, failing which they would stage an indefinite dharna from December 27. Announcing this here on Friday, Mr Madan Rawat, Chairman of the committee, said the main demands included the provision of employment to 192 families and timber distribution rights for them.

NURPUR
Thief nabbed:
Residents of Rehan town in this sub-division nabbed a thief on Wednesday when he was attempting to break into a readymade garments shop. The suspect identified as Deepak was handed over to the Nurpur police. His accomplice Sanju and he hail from Kamnala village. His third accomplice is still at large.

Five arrested: The police has arrested Sardarilal, Sohan, Ram Lubhaya, Rakesh and Kishore on Thursday for allegedly ransacking a wine shop at Bhadroya. A case has been registered.

SOLAN
Child dies:
A three-year-old girl was burnt alive when a stack of hay on which she was sleeping caught fire at Dharot-Patti village, about 8 km from here, on Wednesday. She was rushed to the District Hospital by her father, a small farmer, and then taken to the PGI, Chandigarh, where she was declared brought dead.
