Dravid’s century rescues India

HOBART, Dec 17 (PTI) — Rahul Dravid regained his form in good time for India with a fine century to take the visitors to 241 for six on the opening day of their four-day cricket match against Tasmania here today.

Walking in at five for one in the third over, Dravid batted for all but three of the remaining overs in the day, raising 114 runs for the third wicket with left-hander Hrishikesh Kanitkar, who made a responsible 58, before a slump saw the tourists losing three wickets for 66 runs.

On a wicket which offered more pace in the first two hours than the Adelaide track, Dravid rarely flexed his shoulders till the tea session, and found the gaps at will to post his century at the stroke of the fifth hour of play.

Resuming on 69 after tea, the stylish batsman took a heavy toll of medium pacer-cum-spinner Collin Miller to reach his century, which should be a source of comfort for the Indian team looking to level the three-Test series in the boxing day game at Melbourne.

Dravid hit ten fours in his 324-minute innings off 257 balls.

However, the Indian openers’ failure continued in this match as both V.V.S. Laxman (0) and S Ramesh (34) failed to provide a solid platform for the team to build on.

Laxman, promoted to the opening spot after Devang Gandhi was dropped, fell in the third over itself, edging the seventh delivery he faced to the wicketkeeper without scoring.

Ramesh looked good and had plenty of time to spare against pacemen before he casually pushed at a delivery from left-arm seamer Andrew Downton and was beautifully caught low at first slip by Dan Marsh.

Kanitkar, eyeing the number six spot in the line-up for the Melbourne Test, was very circumspect in his stay till lunch, but straightaway shifted to top gear on resumption, hitting a flurry of fours square of the wicket.

With Kanitkar batting solidly, the innings looked set on the road to a big total. The bowling was reshuffled quite often, with pace and spin combinations tried alike, but without success.

Dravid quickly went for his hundred after the tea break. He first pulled medium-pacer Scott Kramerskothen to the midwicket fence and then straight drove him for three. His hundred arrived when he pulled a short delivery from Miller to the midwicket boundary. He had batted for 280 minutes during which he faced 225 balls and hit 10 fours at this stage.

With the pitch playing easier by the minute and the attack looking increasingly modest, the Indians did not lose a wicket in the afternoon session.

Kanitkar fell after tea when he was adjudged leg before wicket to Kremerskothen. He had batted for 176 minutes, facing 140 balls, six of which he despatched to the fence.

Vijay Bharadwaj’s poor run continued. He could rarely put a ball beyond square and was finally run out going for a two to backward square leg. He made 14 and India were four down for 227.

Hair to officiate in third Test

HOBART, Dec 17 (Reuters) — Australian umpire Darrell Hair, who clashed with India’s Sourav Ganguly in a recent tour match, was named today to officiate in their third and final Test against Australia.

The Australian Cricket Board (ACB) announced that Hair and Zimbabwe’s Ian Robinson would be the umpires in the third Test, starting in Sydney on January 2.

Hair officiated in India’s ill-tempered match against New South Wales earlier this month, in which he and acting Indian captain Ganguly clashed.

India were warned for dissent for disputing decisions, with Hair and Ganguly exchanging words.

Englishman David Shepherd will officiate in the second Test starting in Melbourne on December 26, alongside Australia’s Steve Davis.

Missing from the list was Australian umpire Daryl Harper, who gave India’s captain Sachin Tendulkar out in controversial circumstances in the first Test in Adelaide.

Tendulkar was given out without scoring after ducking into an attempted bouncer from Australian paceman Glenn McGrath. The ball did not bounce as high as expected, skidding through and striking Tendulkar on the shoulder as he was crouching down.

Captain’s knock by Rathore

CALCUTTA, Dec 17 (UNI) — A captain’s knock of 74 by skipper Vikram Rathore and a strokeful 67 by Reetinder Singh Sodhi enabled North Zone to pile up a comfortable 263 for four against West Zone on the opening day of the 39th Duleep Trophy Cricket Championship final at the Eden Gardens here today.

At stumps Rajiv Nayyar and night watchman Navdeep Singh remained not out at the crease with five and six runs respectively. For North Zone, right arm spinner Nilesh Kulkarni and medium pacer Iqbal Siddique claimed two wickets each.

Earlier, electing to bat after winning the toss of the five day event both the North Zone openers — Ashu Dani and Vikram Rathore —started the day with a bang and looked all settled to pile up a big total and throwing a big challenge to their more illustrious opponents.

Taking full advantage of the placid wicket which refused to respond to any of the West Zone medium pace attacks, both Dani and Rathore started hitting all round the wickets at will almost from the beginning showing scant respect to either Paras Mhambrey or Iqbal Siddique who opened the morning spells for the West Zone from the two ends.

MUMBAI, Dec 17 (PTI) — India’s former and current cricket skippers Sunil Gavaskar and Sachin Tendulkar were placed above Sir Don Bradman in the top-six list of the “greatest sportsmen of the century” telephone poll conducted by the BBC in England earlier this week.

According to the December 14 edition of the Sun Herald of Melbourne, Gavaskar stood third in the all-time list behind American heavyweight boxing legend Mohammad Ali who was declared the sports personality of the century ahead of Brazilian football great Pele who was second as per the poll.

Master batsman Tendulkar was placed fifth, a step ahead of Australian icon Bradman and one behind American hoop legend Michael Jordan, the Melbourne paper had reported.

Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, Dec 17— Indian Canadians from Vancouver snatched an exciting 62-54 win over fancied Rajasthan in the fourth All-India Nachhattar Singh Gill Basketball Tournament being played at Kot Kapura on the second day today.

Rajasthan, comprising three junior internationals — Mahipal, Gajinder and Narendar Hooda —- looked in complete command even until the middle of the second half after taking a convincing 35-29 lead at the breather.

The Canadians, who changed their defensive tactics in the second half and switched from zone defence to man-to-man marking made their opponents miss scoring chances. The Canadians, on the other hand, excelled in long range shooting. The full court man-to-man defence in the last two minutes did not help Rajasthan much. Jas Sahota (31) was the toast of Canadian’s win while he got good support from Gurjeet (14) , Pardeep Gill (seven) and Navdeep Brar (five).

Andhra Pradesh, playing two junior internationals — S. Prasad and Vinoy Yadav — recorded a 65-54 win over Punjab Whites in the second match after leading 39-25 in the first half.

Santos’ strike helps Salgaocar win

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, Dec 17 (PTI) — A 82nd-minute goal by Brazilian striker Joao Dos Santos helped defending champions Salgaocar register a 1-0 win over local outfit State Bank of Travancore in the National Football League here last evening.

With this win, the Goan team has six points from two matches. They won their opener against former champion JCT, Phagwara, 1-0.

After receiving an unexpected pass from the midfield eight minutes before close, Santos scored the match-winner from the top of the box.

SBT strikers Ignatious and Ashif Saheef launched some unfruitful attacks on the Goan’s goal as both teams missed chances in the first half.

In the very first minute, Dennis Cabral of Salgaocar connected a mispass from SBT mid-fielder Shabir Ali, but his shot blew over the goal post.

In their second home match, SBT will take on Tollygunge Agragami on Sunday.

The match seemed to be heading for a goalless draw with the SBT, who defeated the Goan outfit by a last minute goal in the Federation Cup last year, giving a good fight till the 70th minute.

Salgaocar, despite enjoying overwhelming superiority in the midfield, could not convert chances. In the 16th minute, a long range shot from Alvito D’Cunha landed in the safe hands of SBT custodian Feroze Sharief.

Luck eluded the bankmen as strikers Ignatious and Saheer saw a few of their shorts rebound off the post in the second half. Moreover, the Goa custodian Juje Siddi was in peak form and made some superb saves to deny the hosts any chance.

Salgaocar on seven occasions and bankmen on four failed to utilise corner kicks.

Salgaocar consistent, Churchill superb

NEW DELHI, Dec 17 (PTI) — Goa rivals Salgaocar and Churchill Brothers extended their hostilities to the national stage as they registered two straight wins while first timers Tollygunge Agragami proved the darkhorses after the opening two rounds of the National Football League, with a stunning victory against East Bengal.

While defending champions Salgaocar did enough to beat their first two rivals — JCT, Phagwara and State Bank of Travancore — by a lone goal, Churchill looked the most impressive side after handing a 5-0 drubbing to another Goan side dempo at home.

Salgaocar, who won four titles this year — the third NFL in January, Rovers, Durand and Super Cups in November, maintained their consistent form but did not look in top form managing to win by a one goal margin against weak opponents.

Denis Cabral saved the day for the defending champions against former champions JCT in the league lung-opener at the Ambedkar Stadium here on December 9 while Brazilian striker Joao Dos Santos rescued them against SBT by scoring the all important goal two minutes before the final whistle yesterday.

Churchill, who edged out Salgaocar for the Goa League title a couple of months ago, on the other hand made a blazing start as they rode on a brilliant hat-trick by Francis Silveira to thrash Dempo 5-0.

The nippy winger then added two more goals to his tally and emerged top scorer with five goals as the Goan side defeated Mahindra and Mahindra 2-0 in Mumbai yesterday and emerged the early leader on goal difference after tying with Salgaocar at six points from two wins.

The Amal Dutta-trained Manaksia Tollygunge Agragami made the best start, stunning glamour outfit East Bengal by a lone goal in the opener at the Rabindra Sarobar and then held another strong team FC Kochin 1-1 to take the third position with four points.

Tollygunge, who also beat East Bengal to win the season opener McDowells’ Cup, could have joined the two Goan sides at six points but were undone by a self goal by Biswanath mondal against Kochin before Moses Oria saved the day for the Calcutta outfit.

A total of 11 matches were played in the two rounds of the 11-round first leg of the league being played in round-robin format on home and away basis. All teams except FC Kochin and SBT played two matches each.

Calcutta giants Mohun Bagan and East Bengal, JCT Phagwara, winners of the inaugural NFL in 1996-97, and first timers Border Security Force (BSF) were following next all with three points with one win and one defeat each to their credit.

Bagan struggled to beat BSF by a lone goal in their first clash but then slumped 1-2 to JCT at the same Guru Nanak Stadium in Ludhiana while East Bengal recovered well from their upset loss to Tollygunge to hand Indian Telephone Industries, Bangalore, a 3-1 defeat at Calcutta.

BSF and JCT also recovered well from defeats in the first outings to win their second matches.

The securitymen defeated Dempo via a Gurjit Atwal goal yesterday at Ludhiana while JCT edged past Bagan thanks to Hardeep Sangha and Hardip Saini who struck for the millmen after Kasif Jamal had put the Calcutta outfit ahead early in the first session.

FC Kochin, Mahindra and Mahindra and ITI also managed to open their account by drawing their games. ITI held the jeepmen in a goal-less draw at the Cooperage, Mumbai, on December 12.

SBT and Dempo were plumbing the bottom in the 12-team league with no points to their credit. While Dempo lost both their matches, SBT have one match to play.

The third round will start on Sunday with three matches. JCT will take on Dempo in a home-match at Ludhiana, SBT meet Tollygunge Agragami at Thiruvananthapuram and Mohun Bagan will lock horns with Mahindra and Mahindra in Calcutta.

Kulbir pedals to gold medal
From Our Sports Reporter

PATIALA, Dec 17 — Ace cyclist Kulbir Singh of Punjab Police pedalled his way to glory as he garnered a well-deserved gold medal in the gruelling 1000m time trial event clocking 1m-11.93 seconds in the National Cycling Championships (track) being held at the Punjabi University Velodrome here today.

However Kulbir Singh failed to improve upon his own national record which he had set at the National Games held in Imphal earlier this year.

In the 1500m team time trial for men, the Punjab quartet of Pavittar Singh, Gurpreet Singh, Hitraj Singh and Tejinder Singh warded off a stiff challenge from the Railways foursome to clinch the gold.
