Two burglars caught

Chandigarh, Dec 21 — The Crime Branch of the local police has arrested two persons who were involved in four burglaries and two incidents of theft, here today.

According to the police sources, an information was received that the gang was roaming around in the city and was planning to strike. A team supervised by Inspector J.S. Cheema, head of the branch, was constituted and the accused — Udey Raj alias Lala and Dhanwant Kumar alias Chottu, residents of Colony Number 4 — were arrested near the Sector 20 petrol pump.

On interrogation, they admitted that they had burgled SCF 1, SCO 44 and 45 in Sector 20-C, a house in Kaimbwala village and Wadhwa Handloom in Sector 30. They also admitted to stealing one spare wheel as well as the battery of a Kinetic Honda scooter from near Sukhna Lake. Silver ornaments, tape recorders, vehicle spare parts and other household goods have been recovered from them.

However, they spent the cash which they stole from the shops. Sources added that both accused were convicts and were released from Burail Jail in March and had gone back to their old ways. They were remanded to the judicial custody by a city court.

POs arrested
The police has arrested two proclaimed offenders who had been on the wanted list for the past many years.

Amarjit Singh was arrested from Sarafa Bazar in Faridkot. He was declared a PO in an Arms Act case in 1990. Balwant was declared a PO in 1993 for assaulting and threatening a person. He was arrested from Naka village in the Bhatinda district. The accused were today remanded to the judicial custody for 14 days.

Dowry victim
Ms Surjit Kaur, a resident of the CSIO Colony, Sector 30, lodged a complaint with the police, alleging that she was being ill-treated for bringing inadequate dowry.

She alleged that she was married in December 1998 to a Ropar resident, Jaspal Singh, and was illtreated and harassed for not fulfilling the demands of her in-laws from day one.

A case under Sections 406 and 498-A of the IPC has been registered against her husband and Amrit Kaur, her mother-in-law and Mohinder Pal Kaur, her sister-in-law.

Whisky seized
The police has arrested Krishan, a resident of Sector 38, and seized 28 quarters of whisky from him. A case under Sections 61, 1 and 14 of the Excise Act has been registered.

Car stolen
Mr Rajesh Mahajan, a resident of Sector 46-A, reported that someone stole his car (CH-01-X-3837) from outside his residence at about 4.50 a.m. He said he had heard the sound of the car's engine, but, as he lived on the first floor, by the time he had come down, the person had sped away.

A case has been registered and further investigations are on.

Stabbing case
Police parties have been sent to Ramgarh, Devinagar, Nada Sahib, Azad Colony, Mauli Jagran and Rajiv Colony with photographs of the unidentified woman who was recently found stabbed in a field near Ghaggar river. The police has sent detailed information of the deceased to police stations in the adjoining states also and has appealed to the public to provide any information in the case.

‘Adopt green technology’

CHANDIGARH, Dec 21 — Development of green technology from 1860 onwards was traced by Prof M.M. Sharma at the international session of Chemcon ’99 on cleaner and greener technologies at Panjab University here today.

Dr K.P. Nyati, Head of the environmental division in the Confederation of Indian Industries, spoke on the adoption of greener technology by the local industry. Dr S.K. Sharma from the host department stressed on the early adoption of green technology by the Indian industry.

Prof (Dr ) I. Nirdosh, a former student of PU currently at Lakehead University, USA, spoke on mineral floatation, ways for radioactive waste processing and base metal extraction.

Prof S.B. Jonnalagada from the University of Durban and Prof Geoffrey Evans from the University of New Castle, Australia, were prominent speakers.

The session was presided over by Dr Subrahmanyam, President of the Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers. Dr V.K. Rattan conducted the morning session. Prof B. Ghosh, a former chairman of the Chemical Engineering Department, PU, released the student magazine Tatva.

National conference: The need for child care was stressed by Mr C.L. Garg, Food and Supplies Minister, Punjab, while inaugurating a two-day conference on ‘Early childhood welfare’, organised by the Department of Education at Panjab University here on Tuesday.

Mr Garg pointed out certain programmes that the government had envisaged for child health promotion. He also announced a grant of Rs 25,000 for the INPA for child welfare-related activities.

Condoled: Members of the faculty and non-teaching staff condoled the death of Prof S.C. Kaushal of the Department of Botany. Prof Kaushal was cremated here on Tuesday. Prof Kaushal had died following a road accident near Theog.

A two-minute silence was observed to pay tributes to the teacher who specialised in mushroom cultivation.

The Panjab University Teachers Association in a press release also condoled the untimely demise of Prof Kaushal.

Disaster management: The importance of disaster management at the pre-disaster stage was stressed by Dr Pradeep Sahni, Professor and head of Public Administration division at the School of Social Sciences, IGNOU, at the Department of Public Administration at Panjab University here on Tuesday.

Dr Pradeep elucidated various stages of disasters and the management required to handle these.Back

Vegetable prices stable

SAS NAGAR, Dec 21 — Prices of commonly-used vegetables in the local markets have remained unchanged during the past few weeks. While a superior quality of potato was being sold by a vendor in Phase 5 market for Rs 5 a kg, another cheaper variety was available for Rs 4 a kg.

Onions were available at Rs 10 a kg in the Phase 4 market. However, a vendor in Phase 5 market was selling 2.5 kg of the vegetable for Rs 20. Tomato was another vegetable which was being sold at Rs 10 a kg in the Phase 3B2 market. A superior quality of the vegetable was selling at Rs 12 a kg.

There was slight variation in the prices of brinjal, which was selling between Rs 4 a kg and Rs 6 a kg in the local markets. A seasonal vegetable, carrot, was selling between Rs 5 a kg and Rs 7 a kg. Cauliflower and cabbage were selling at Rs 5 a kg and Rs 7 a kg, respectively.

A vendor in Phase 4 market was selling turnip at Rs 5 a kg . A bunch of spinach and methi was being sold at Rs 2.50 and Rs 3 each. Peas were available at Rs 10 a kg. A superior quality of the vegetable was being sold for Rs 12 a kg.Back

Student selected

Aman Verma a Class IX student of Manav Mangal School, Sector 11, Panchkula, has been selected for the under-16 Haryana schools cricket team which will take part in the National School Games to be held at Calcutta in the last week of December.

Aman had earlier played at the National School Games in 1996 at Guwahati and in 1997 at Bangalore, besides receiving Sports Talent Search Scholarship from the Sports Authority of India.

Cricket tourney

The results of various matches of the Blessed Edmund Rice Cricket Tournament being played at St John's High School, Sector 26, here, are as follows: Burke House defeated Morissey House by 164 runs, while Maher House beat Rice House by 89 runs in the under-16 section. In the under-14 section, Morissey House beat Burke House by two wickets, while Maher House defeated Rice House by 108 runs.

Probables selected

The Chandigarh Korfball Association has selected 20 probables, 10 each in the boys' and girls' sections, who will attend a training camp beginning on December 22 at the Government College for Girls, Sector 11, to prepare for the National Korfball Championship to be held at Chandigarh from December 25. The selection trials were held today.

The probables are as follows: Boys — Parveen Malik 1, Pradeep 2, Manjit Singh 3, Manjit Mar, Bikranjeet Singh, Sanjeev Masih, Sumit Kalia, Anant Moudgil, Sanjay Kumar and Harish.

Girls — Nirmal Kaur, Gurpeet Kaur, Kanchan, Monika Gupta, Nidhi, Mandeep, Sandhya, Tejinder Kaur, Sarabjit Kaur and Sunita.

TT trials

The UT Education Department will hold selection trials in table tennis for boys and girls in various age groups for the National School Games.

The trials in the under-14, under-17 and under-19 sections will be held at the Sector 23 table tennis hall on December 27, 28 and 29, respectively, according to Mr Brahmjit Kalia, District Education Officer.Back
