2 girls complain against in-laws

CHANDIGARH, Dec 24 — Two residents have lodged complaints of harassment against their in-laws for bringing inadequate dowry.

According to police sources, Veena complained that she was married to Dadu Majra resident Anup Singh in 1998. She had been ill-treated and harassed by her in-laws for the past many months.

Similarly, Gurjit Kaur, a resident of Hallo Majra village, levelled allegations of harrasment against her husband, Inder Raj of Kotla village in Fatehgarh Sahib. She reportedly said that her in-laws were forcing her to bring more dowry.

Cases under Sections 406, 498-A, IPC, has been registered and investigations have been initiated by the CAW Cell.

3 held with liquor: The police has arrested Karam Chand, and Dharam Dutt, residents of Sunder Nagar, and Abhey Thakur, a resident of Bihar, and recovered 1449 pouches of whisky. They were nabbed in a truck (HID 4775) from Sector 26. A case under Sections 61, 1, 14 of the Excise Act has been registered against them.

1 dies in mishap: A local industrialist died while another was injured in a truck-car collision near the railway crossing last night. The accident happened when an unidentified truck hit the car, causing injuries to car-borne Ashok Sharma and Sadhu Singh.

According to the police, both were taken to the Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, Chandigarh, where Ashok Sharma was declared brought dead by the doctors.

ZIRAKPUR

Pickpocket held: Baldev Raj, a pickpocket was nabbed by the Zirakpur police this afternoon near the bus stop allegedly while committing the crime. A currency note of Rs 50 and a diary were recovered from him.

The police had registered a case under Section 379, IPC.Back

Students present folklore

CHANDIGARH, Dec 24 — In the age of hip-hopping pop it was pleasant to see folk songs and folklore of Punjab resounding the walls of Bal Bhawan in Sector 23 here today. The event was the concluding day of a three-day state-level educational competition for secondary and senior secondary school students, organised by the Punjab School Education Board. Folk lores like Mirza Sahiban attracted the attention of the audience. There were competitions in shabad Gayan, Waar gyaan, poem recitation, speech contest, essay writing, painting Bhangra.

Speaking at the prize distribution function, the Minister of State for Education, Punjab, Mr Swarna Ram, said Punjab had history of sacrifice and valour. The minister appreciated the performance by students and promised to do his bit to promote such events in the future.

The results of today’s competitions were: Speech — Arun Kumar 1, Rupinder 2, Dhanwant Singh 3 and Shivani (consolation prize); folk song — Ranjot Singh 1, Gagandeep 2, Sonia Ahuja 3 and Jagir Singh (consolation prize); On the spot writing — Simranjit 1, Asish Arora 2, Asha 3 and Navdipika (consolation prize); bhangra — Khalsa College Senior Secondary School, Amritsar, 1, DAV Senior Secondary School, Amritsar, 2, Adarsh Bal Vidya Mandir, Nawanshahr 3 and J.M.FM. Carver heads carrom body

CHANDIGARH, Dec 24 — Mr Harold Carver, Principal, St Stephen’s School, Sector 45, and Mr Mahesh Sekhri of Punjab National Bank, were unanimously re-elected President and General Secretary, respectively, of the Chandigarh Carrom Association at its general body meeting held here on Thursday.

Brother C. D’ Abreu Principal, St John’s High School, Sector 26, was elected Senior Vice-President.

The other office-bearers are: Vice-President — Mr Ravinder Sharma: Assistant General Secretary — Mr K.S. Patwal; Joint Secretaries — Mr Diwan Singh Aithani and Mr Narinder Arora; Press Secretary —Mr Ram Singh Yadav; and treasurer — Mr S.P. Dobhal.

The executive committee members are Mr C.M. Sharma, Mr B.S. Negi, Mr Mukesh Piplani, Ms Bhanu Jain, Mr Vinod Vashisht, Mr Sudhir Sidhu, Mr S.K. Mishra, Mr N.S. Pahwa, Mr Manoj Gulati and Mr Suraj Kohli.Back


DAV Club win title

CHANDIGARH, Dec 24 — DAV School Club, Sector 8, won the title in the women's section of the Chandigarh Handball Tournament here at DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, today. In the final, DAV Club defeated Shri Guru Gobind Singh Senior Secondary School, Sector 35, 15-7. At halftime, the score was 7-1. The main scorers for the winners were Asha Kumari (5), Karamjit (4).

In the men's semifinals, SD College Club, Sector 32, defeated DAV (B), 29-21. At halftime, the score stood at 14-9.

Devinder Negi scored 13 goals for the winners. Shaminder and Rashpal scored five and four goals, respectively, for the winners. Motilal scored 11 goals, followed by Raj Kumar who scored six goals and Gurpreet who scored three goals for the losers.

The men's final will take place tomorrow at 9 a.m.

Shooting tourney: The Northern India Shooting Championship in all age groups, in boys' and girls' sections, will begin here tomorrow at Patiali Rao shooting ranges in Sector 25. Teams of Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Chandigarh will be seen in action in this five-day tournament. Sabeeha Dhillon, local national record holder, will be among the participants.Back
