FEROZEPORE
Relief sent:
The local SDM, Mr D.P. Kharbanda, flagged off two trucks carrying relief material, including food and clothes, for cyclone-hit persons in Orissa from D.C. Model Senior Secondary School here on Thursday. This was stated by the schools coordinator, Mr Anirudh Gupta.

GURDASPUR
Arrested:
The police has arrested Mohan Lal of Dehriwal Kiran in Batala district and recovered a .38 bore pistol, a revolver, six cartridges and some cash from him. This was stated by Mr Varinder Kumar, SSP, here on Thursday. He was a suspected activist of the Khalistan Commondo Force.

JALANDHAR
Fair:
A seminar, "How to plan your career" was held at the career and education fair organised by the Greater Punjab Trust for Education, Training and Employment at Desh Bhagat Yaadgar Hall here. Mr Inder Bhullar, a trust member apprised the students of various career options in the fields of electronics, hotel management, merchant navy and agriculture.

LUDHIANA
Retired:
Dr M.S. Tiwana, Additional Director, Research (Veterinary), Punjab Agricultural University, retired from the university after three decades of distinguished service. Dr Tiwana had made a significant contribution to genetic improvement of buffaloes in Punjab by collecting germ plasma from different parts of the country.

Appointed: Mr Harinder Singh Bholu has been appointed president, block No 12, District Congress Committee.

MALERKOTLA
Robbery:
About six robbers attacked Mr Rajinder Kumar's residence, a home guard employee, on Wednesday at Naudharani road here and wounded members of the family. They decamped with jewellery and some cash. A case has been registered under Sections 458, 382, 148 and 149, IPC.

NAWANSHAHR
Banned:
The Deputy Commissioner, Dr Roshan Sunkaria, through an order under Section 144 Cr P.C., has banned lucky draw schemes in the district till February 23.

Declamation contest: The local W.L. Arya Girls Senior Secondary School, on Thursday organised an inter-school declamation contest to mark the martyrdom of Swami Sharadhanand. Mr B.S. Balli, DPRO, inaugurated the contest by lighting the lamp. As many as 30 participants, including 13 teams, participated.

Raids: Ms Simarjot Kaur, DFSC, in a press release issued here on Wednesday, informed that with a view to ensuring proper supply of essential commodities and kerosene, the department had conducted raids on 239 ration depots in the district. While show-cause notices had been issued to 52 depot holders licences of 10 depot holders had been suspended for various irregularities.

Cheques given: Cheques totalling Rs 1.35 crore have been given to as many as 54 panchayats of Nawanshahr block for carrying out various development works. This was stated by Mr Surinderpal Angra, BDPO, on Thursday.

Sangat darshan: Dr Roshan Sunkaria, Deputy Commissioner, in a press note issued here on Thursday said on the instructions of the Chief Minister the district administration had organised 119 sangat darshan programmes at villages, subdivisions and districts to redress the grievances of the people.

March: Students of the DIET here on Thursday took out a march from the bus stand to the DC office and also staged a dharna to protest against the police action on DIET students at Ropar.

Competition: Amardeep Singh Shergill Memorial College, Mukandpur, 15 km from here, organised an inter-college shabad singing competition on Thursday to commemorate the foundation day of the college. Mr Gurcharan Singh Shergill and Mrs Gurmej Kaur Shergill, founder of the college, presided.

Beopar cell:
Leading businessmen and representatives of various trade organisations have formed the Punjab Beopar Cell, a non political forum. Mr Ved Parkash Gupta, will be the president of the cell and Mr Chiman Lal Bansal the general secretary.

Elected: The following have been elected office-bearers of the PSEB Draftsmen Association: president — Mr Resham Singh Mann; general secretary — Mr Amarjit Garg; and finance secretary — Mr Nirmal Singh.

First aid course: Smithkline Beecham, Nabha, organised a three-day first aid training course for its officers in collaboration with district Red Cross Society, Patiala. Mr S.K. Jolly, Manager, inaugurated the camp and Mr Sushil Kumar presided over the closing function. Mr K.R. Verma, district training supervisor of the Red Cross imparted training regarding handling of accident cases.

Relief Sent: Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd, Sangrur territory, through its dealers' network has arranged a truckload of woollen blankets, sweaters, shrits and tarpauline for the Orissa cyclone victims.

Advocate dies:
Ashish Verma, an advocate was killed in an accident near Mukerian when a truck hit his car. The Bar Association here, held a condolence meeting.

ROPAR
Camp:
Jathedar Tota Singh, Education Minister, Punjab, inaugurated a free eye operation camp on Thursday organised by the local Youth Aggarwal Sabha at DAV Public Senior Secondar School here. Mr Tota Singh announced a grant of Rs 31,000 for the sabha.

SAMRALA
Sweaters distributed:
The Lions Club here distributed sweaters, shawls, books and shoes to poor students of a local school on Friday.

Bar Association:
The following have been elected office-bearers of the local Bar Association. president — Mr Jameshwar Dass; vice-president — Mr Baljit More; secretary — Mr Des Raj Saini and joint secretary — Mr Om Parkash Gulati.

Seminar: Mr Indresh, in charge R.S.S., Himgiri region comprising Jammu Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh, said here on Thursday that while solving the Kashmir problem the geographical and cultural diversity of the Kashmir valley and Himachal and Ladakh, regions should be kept in mind. He was speaking at a seminar on the Kashmir problem and its solution organised by the Indian History Society at RKSD College.

Students given pullovers: The Lions Club (Grace) distributed 43 pullovers and 62 pairs of shoes to poor students of Government School, Teek, on Thursday. The district coordinator, Dr D.R. Miglani, was present on the occasion.

NARNAUL
Arrears' recovery:
The Dakshin Haryana Vitran Nigam (DHBVN) has launched a campaign from December 1 to recover the arrears of electricity bills. This was stated by Mr P. Bansal, Superintending Engineer, DHBVN, here on Thursday. Arrears totalling Rs 44.86 lakh were collected in the past two weeks.

SONEPAT
Arrested:
The police here arrested Pawan Kumar of Balmiki Basti for allegedly selling tickets on the black market at Bawa cinema here on Thursday. A case has been registered.

Pistol seized: The Kharkhauda police arrested Pradeep of Thana Kalan village for allegedly carrying a country-made pistol and a cartridge on Thursday. A case under the Indian Arms Act has been registered.

Liquor bottles seized: The Ganaur police arrested Ramesh of Kheri Gujjar village and Manoj of Mashad Mohalla here on Thursday for allegedly possessing 23 bottles of liquor in violation of the Excise Act.

Cheque given: Mr N.P.Sinha, Chief General Manager of the Atlas Cycle Industries Limited , gave a cheque for Rs 88,000 to the Deputy Commissioner, Mr Sudhir Rajpal, here on Friday for the bereaved families of the fire tragedy that took place on Divali.

NSS camp: Mr A.K.Yadav, Additional Deputy Commissioner, inaugurated a 10-day NSS camp at Hindu College here on Thursday. About 150 students are participating.

BILASPUR
Youth festival:
Saphire Musical Club, Bilaspur, got the first prize in the folk songs and in folk dance competition while Navdeep Kala Manch, Bilaspur was second in the district level two-day "youth festival" held at Ghumarwin, 30 km from here. Basant Sangeet Kala Manch, Ghumarwin, excelled in the flute recital and Saphire Musical Group was first in table. Paramjeet got first position in harmonium. As many as 120 artistes took part in the competition.

Ban orders: The Additional District Magistrate, Mr R.D. Panwar, passed orders under Section 133, IPC, on Thursday banning the rearing of pigs within municipal limits here with immediate effect. The orders said any violation would be severely dealt with.

KANGRA
Victim identified:
The youth, who had committed suicide by hanging himself at McLeodgang on Wednesday, was identified as Sanjeev Kumar of Vivek village, Ramkot Billawar, in Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday.
