'City has enormous potential'
By Arvind Katyal

CHANDIGARH, July 3 — A former Indian test cricketer from Chandigarh, Chetan sharma, who is now settled in New Delhi, is in the town to provide players from his academy with exposure. The under-16 cricketers are presently training in Chetan's Cricket Academy in Lajpat Nagar, New Delhi.

The coach Jagjit Singh was also here and net practice went on till late in the evening. If there is no rain tomorrow morning, there will be an exhibition match against DAV school coaching centre team, coached by S.S. Bawa. The match could not be played today due to overnight rain, which made drying of the pitch impossible.

Earlier in the morning, Chetan Sharma, who had studied in DAV Senior secondary School, Sector 8, paid a surprise visit to the Principal's office. Mr Ravinder Talwar, the Principal, greeted him on his homecoming. Chetan recalled his school days here and was happy to see a great change in the school.

He wished that as the school had been known for its sporting contribution, particulary to cricket, it would be better if the school produced more international cricketers. Legendary cricketers like Kapil Dev, Ashok Malhotra and he had always felt proud to be associated with the school, he said.

On being asked about his recent expert comments on the World Cup in England, he said he felt delighted to be associated with the media. He also wrote for newspapers. He admitted that he could not become a professional writer but tried to write from his heart. He said one should write positive criticism.

Chetan expressed unhapiness over the conflict between India and Pakistan. He agreed to kapil Dev's demand for snapping cricketing ties between the two countries.

He was of the opinion that Chandigarh had an enormous potential and the boys needed tournament exposure. Many of them could be in the national side, he added.

Married to an air hostess, he said he had the services of five good coaches at his disposal in New Delhi. An under-14 team was being groomed, which would knock at the doors of the Indian team in the near future, he added.

CFA meeting: The annual general meeting of the Chandigarh Football association (CFA) will be held in Punjab Board of Technical Education building, Sector 36, on July 10 at 11 am. The main item on the agenda at the crucial meeting is elections to the executive committee for the next term.

Another item on the agenda is passing of audited results of the association for the past one year. The CFA has, in the past, organised the federation cup and other tournaments for juniors and seniors. The UT team won the North zone football tounament recently.

Mr A.S. Bains is the President of the association at present. Mr Rakesh Bakshi is the secretary of the body.Back
