Cop suspended for firing shots

CHANDIGARH, July 12 — The Chandigarh Police Department has suspended head constable Surinder Singh for allegedly firing some shots from his service revolver in Sector 20 a few days ago.

The sector beat officer had in an inebriated state gone to the house of Mansoor Ali, an advocate, and demanded a glass of water, besides ordering the former to raise his hands. He had then taken out his weapon and fired some shots before being overpowered by the lawyer and nearby residents.

Two POs arrested: The police has arrested two proclaimed offenders (POs) who were wanted in cases registered against them.

The accused are Mohan Chander Joshi, who was arrested by the police in 1996 for fighting in a public place and causing injuries to others. He had since been evading summons and declared a proclaiamed offender. A case under Sections 160 and 323, IPC, had been registered against him.

The other to be arrested is Pradeep Kumar, a resident of Damore village in Shimla district, who had been booked by the police for causing death of a person by rash and negligent driving. He is wanted in a case registered under Sections 279, 338 and 304-A, IPC.

House burgled: Mr Surjit Singh, a resident of Palsora village, reported that his house was burgled while he was sleeping on the roof of his house last night. The burglars decamped with some gold jewellery, a watch, a camera and his passport. A case has been registered under Section 380, IPC, and further investigations are on.

Seven held: The police has arrested Shiv Mohan and Guddu, residents of Maloya Colony and Muzaffarnagar, respectively, for selling tickets on the backmarket outside KC Cinema. Cases under Section 7-C, Punjab Cinema Act, have been registered against them.

The police has arrested Thakur Yadav, Gurdial, Sham Sunder, Sunita and Kalawati, all residents of Colony No 4, for roaming about under suspicious circumstances. A case under sections 107 and 151, CrPC, has been registered against them.

PANCHKULA

Parole jumper held: The police today claimed to have arrested a parole jumper who was planning to snatch a taxi after eliminating the driver of the vehicle hired from the Sector 16 taxi stand here. Two knives and some material have been seized from him.

According to the information available, the suspect, Rajesh, a resident of Kaithal, was sentenced to life imprisonment and lodged in Ambala Central Jail along with two other persons in connection with a murder case in March, 1998. Rajesh was on parole from March 16, 1999, to April 14. Instead of reporting back at the jail at the end of his parole, he went to Kandhala in Uttar Pradesh to learn driving.

When the suspect came to the township to hire a taxi for Patiala, the taxi driver got suspicious and informed the police.

He has been arrested under the Arms Act.

Stabbing: The police has arrested a barber, Neetu Singh, for allegedly injuring another barber of Sector 11, Mohammed Ayub, by stabbing him with scissors here on Sunday. The victim was rushed to the PGI, Chandigarh

According to information available, the victim, who used to work with Neetu Singh in the Sector 11 market, had opened his separate shop a few months back. Getting envious of his former assitant's success, Neetu Singh attacked the victim with scissors. The attacker was in an inebriated condition when the incident took place.Back

Exhibition on Kargil martyrs

CHANDIGARH, July 12 — In an attempt to raise funds for the Kargil victims, an 18-year-old city girl, Kavita Singh, a budding artist, has put up an exhibition of poster-poems titled, ''Kargil shaheedon ko salaam'', at a hotel lobby in Sector 22.

The exhibition was inaugurated today by Mr Ashwani Luthra, Income Tax Commissioner, Chandigarh.

The 18 poster-poems in multicolour and collage style on display are all in the distinctive bold Kavita Singh style which she happens to share with her renowned artist-father, Satwant Singh.

The poster-poems, which have been inspired by couplets of Guru Gobind Singh and also poets like M.L. Chaturvedi, illustrate the solidarity and unity of the country towards the valiant soldiers. In some of the posters, Kavita has also penned some popular patriotic Hindi film lyrics like ''Apni azadi ko hum hargiz mita saktey nahin''.

For Kavita Singh, this exhibition has been part of her effort to pay her homage to all those soldiers who have laid their lives for the country. "I would be glad if some of these works are bought by the people as I would donate the sum to the Veer Jawan Fund," she said.Back

Send blood samples for DNA test: HC

CHANDIGARH, July 12 — On the habeas corpus petition filed by Ms Ramanjit Kaur of Ropar district for the recovery of her second male child, allegedly born to her at the PGI, Mr Justice THB Chalapathi of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, today directed the Joint Registrar (Rules) of the high court to send the blood samples of the female child and the petitioner's collected today at the PGI to Hyderabad for the DNA finger printing.

The judge also directed the petitioner to deposit Rs 15,000 as cost for taking the sample by air to Hyderabad.

He also directed the Registrar (General) of the high court to depute a person for delivering the sample at the Cellular and Biological Institute, Hyderabad. The institute had been directed to submit its report on or before August 3, 1999.

Mrs Ramanjit Kaur had alleged in her petition that after the pregnancy test the doctor had told her that she would give birth to twins, but on delivery at the PGI, she was told that she had given birth to a female child. It was further alleged that some employees at the PGI had informed her that she had given birth to twins out of which one was a male child, who she alleged had been handed over to a couple of Ropar.

She had also sought a CBI inquiry into the whole matter.

Contempt petition

Mr R.S. Verma, Chief Secretary, Government of Haryana, was today issued a notice of motion for August 28, 1999 on a contempt petition filed by Mr M.M. Dhonchak, Additional Civil Judge, Senior Division, Nuh (Gurgaon).

Mr Dhonchak, who is also the President of the Haryana Civil Judges Association, stated in the contempt petition that in two separate writ petitions the Punjab and Haryana High court had directed the state government to provide telephone connections at the offices and residences of all judicial officers in the state. The direction was to be complied within three months.

The state government had also preferred an SLP in the Supreme Court against the judgement and directions of the high court. However, the Supreme had declined to stay the operation of the judgement. But still the order of the high court had not been complied with.

The petitioner asked the court to summon the accused, and punish and sentence him for not complying with the orders of the high court.Back



 


NW Zone retain volleyball title

CHANDIGARH, July 12 — North-West Zone retained the volleyball title on the concluding day of the eighth CRPF Inter-Sector Volleyball Championship which concluded here this evening at the Police Lines, sector 26. The meet was hosted by the 127 battalion of the CRPF.

In the final which went into three straight games, North-West Zone got the better of last year's runners-up team of Rapid Action Force ( RAF) at 25-18, 25- 21 and 25-16.This was the third time in a row that North-West Zone claimed the title.

The third place went to Central Sector team who downed Southern Sector in a nail-biting finish which was extended to five games. Ultimately the former won at 20-25, 26-24, 21-25, 25-18 and 15-13.

In all 12 teams from different sectors of the CRPF took part in this championship.

Mr J.P. Verma, ADGP, CRPF, North-West Zone was the chief guest and gave away the prizes.

Nominated

The Administrator, Chandigarh Administration, Lt-Gen B.K.N. Chhibber (retd), has nominated Mr T.C. Gupta and Mr Desh Prem Azad as members of the Chandigarh Sports Council for a period of three years.

Mr T.C. Gupta is known for his organisational abilities and is also a senior member of the rowing, judo and cricket associations. Mr Azad has been the recipient of the Dronacharya Award in cricket.

Direct entry

Neha Singh ,a ninth class student of the local Sacred Heart School,Sector 26 is one of the budding tennis girl players of Chandigarh who has been given direct entry into the main draw of the AITA Open Tennis Tournament to be held at Secunderabad ( Andhra Pradesh) from July 19 to 23.

Neha had earlier won the Total Tennis Tournament in the under-14 section and the under-16 section which was organised recently in Chandigarh by the Total Tennis Academy. She practices under the watchful eyes of her father, Mr Baldev Singh, who himself is a senior tennis coach at the Lake Club centre. She also took part in the Adidas Master's Tournaments held in different parts of north India.

Neha said she got full support from her school Principal whenever she went for the big tournaments. She also affirmed faith in her father's coaching style

The other Chandigarh players who have been given direct entry into the main draw of the AITA Open Tennis Tournament include Sunil Kumar, Amanjot , Chhatwinder Singh and Tushar Liberhan, in their respective age groups.

Dist cricket

In the Panchkula District Cricket tournament organised by the Panchkula District Cricket Association, Junior XI defeated Manav Mangal XI by two runs in a match held at the Sector 5 ground.

Brief scores: Junior XI 135 runs for nine wickets in 25 overs (Abhinav 25, Gurdeep 17, Nishant 3 for 14, Saurav 2 for 21). Manav Mangal XI 133 all out in 22.5 overs ( Navneet 49, Varun 23, Vivek Walia 3 for 28, Anand 3 for 24, Nitin Joshi 2 for 14).

In the second match, Marval XI beat Little Flower Club by 29 runs. Back
