Check-up camp:
The local unit of the Bharat Vikas Parishad held a free skin disease check-up camp at a community hall here on Sunday. Mr K.S. Bajwa, Assistant Excise and Taxation Commissioner, Gurdaspur, presided. Medicines free of cost were given to the patients.

Society: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Sukhmani Sahib Seva Society here: President — Mr Rajinder Singh Advocate; Vice-President — Mr Tarlok Singh Khokhar; Secretary — Mr Harbans Singh Hanspal; and Treasurer — Mr Hardeep Singh.

HOSHIARPUR
Fair:
A week-long annual traditional fair of Sawan Ashatmi will be held here from August 12 to 19. The pilgrimage for the holy shrine of Goddess Chintpurni will start from Shakti Temple here on August 12.

Tributes paid: Tributes were paid to Rifleman Pawan Kumar of 14 J&K Rifles by Mr Iqbal Singh Sidhu, Deputy Commissioner, Lt Col Ajit Singh, President of the local unit of the Indian Ex-Servicemen League, Punjab and Chandigarh, and many others at the Kargil martyr's native village, Bambotar, on Sunday. A cheque for Rs 11,000 was given to Mr Krishan Chand, father of the martyr.

KAPURTHALA
Buses checked:
A campaign has been launched in the state to check the plying of buses without permits. Mr Raghbir Singh, Transport Minister, along with Mr Gurmit Singh Multani, District Transport Minister, launched the campaign on Monday on the GT Road and impounded 20 buses which were plying without permits and fined them Rs 1.30 lakh.

College session: The first academic session of the Baba Darbara Singh College for Girls set up at Tibba village of Sultanpur Lodhi subdivision started on Monday. Educationists, social workers and prominent citizens of the area were present at the function.

Association:

Van mahotsav: The Lions Club here organised a "van mahotsav" here on Sunday by planting 100 saplings on the PAU-Haibowal road and in Udham Singh Nagar. Mr Gurbaz Singh, Divisional Forest Officer, Phillaur , was the chief guest. A seminar on pollution control was also organised.

Liquor shop shifted:
The district administration here has shifted the liquor shop opened recently at Gholian Kalan village in the district to a remote place following demonstrations by women of the village to protest against its opening.

Group clash: Three residents of Rode village in the district were seriously injured on Sunday in indiscriminate firing between two groups in the village. According to a report, the incident reportedly took place following a dispute over a piece of land.

Mazdoor union:

Thread rolls found: The police has recovered stolen thread worth Rs 3 lakh loaded in two trucks from the possession of Sukhdev Singh, alias Sukha, of Pangota village on Sunday near Patti. A case under Section 379, 411 and 34, IPC, has been registered.

Kargil martyrs: Tributes were paid to the Kargil martyrs at a function organised here on Sunday by a local welfare society. Dr Gurinderpal Singh Sahota, SDM, presided. Families of the martyrs of the area were honoured at the function.

LIC building: The local branch office of the LIC of India was shifted to its new building at the local Sarhali road on Sunday which has been constructed at a cost of Rs 68 lakh.

Code of conduct: Mr Sucha Singh, District General Secretary, Government Teachers Union, Amritsar, in a press note issued here on Monday alleged that the District Education Officer, Amritsar, had violated the model code of conduct by releasing orders for the transfers of primary teachers in spite of the ban imposed by the Chief Election Commissioner of India.top

Out of order : A number of telephones in Kajheri village have been out of order for the past couple of weeks. According to Mr R.L. Nagpal, a number of phones of the village have not been working for more than a month. He alleged that complaints with the Department of Telecommunication have failed to yield any results.

Heroes remembered:
A two-minute silence was observed in memory of Kargil heroes by members of the Sector 61-B Residents Welfare Society here on Tuesday. The meeting in this connection was attended, among others, by Mr Harinder Singh Billa, President of the local Municipal Council. An amount of Rs 11,000 was collected by participants on the spot for the Kargil fund.

Appointed: Mr Harjinder Singh has been appointed Vice-President of the Block Congress Committee SAS Nagar, according to a press note. top

FARIDABAD
Body found:
The body of a woman, aged around 25, was found on Monday from a vacant plot near Jawahar Colony. Police sources said the woman might have been strangulated as a dupatta was found tied around her neck. In another incident armed persons attacked a farm house at Fatehpur Jaga village near Ballabhgarh and escaped with a double-barrel gun and some cash after injuring two watchmen and a gardener.

HISAR
Lawyers on strike: Lawyers of district Bar Association here observed a strike on Tuesday in support of the lawyers of Gurgaon Association and demanded immediate action against two policemen who allegedly misbehaved with an advocate of Gurgaon.

Rotary installation:
The annual installation function of the Rotary Club was held at RKSD College here on Sunday in which Mr R L Bansal and Mr Ghansham Dass Goyal were installed as President and Secretary, respectively, for 1999-2000. The Deputy Commissioner, Ms Jaiwanti Sheokand, presided.

Resentment:
Knee-deep water has been standing at Bara Hazari, Balluwara, Swamiwara and some other areas here for the past several days because of choked sewers. Residents complain that repeated requests to the Public Health authorities have failed to move them.

SIRSA
Bus overturns: About 11 persons were injured when a bus overturned near Kalanwali in the district. According to information, the bus was going from Kalanwali to Kaluana when the mishap occurred.

Open darbar: The district administration has suspended open darbars till the mid-term poll. This was stated by the Additional Deputy Commissioner on Monday.

SONEPAT
Transferred: The Senior Superintendent of Police, Mr K. Selvraj, has ordered the transfer of Mr Sube Singh Saini, SHO of Rai police station in the district. Mr Inder Singh Kundu, in charge of the CIA staff, will take the charge with immediate effect.

Strike: Students of CRA College observed strike here on Monday to seek action against those involved in the attack on two students, including a leader of the students union. Later on a meeting of the parents of the students belonging to two rival groups was called by the principal in this connection.

Injured: Four persons were injured when a Haryana Roadways bus fell into a khud on the Sonepat-Gohana road near Barota village, 25 km from here, on Monday. According to a report, the driver lost the control of the bus which led to the accident.

Suicide: Om Veer (35) allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison at his house in Narinder Nagar here on Saturday. A family feud was stated to be the cause of the suicide. According to another report, Jasmer (25) allegedly committed suicide by consuming insecticide tablets at his house in Bakhtawarpur village on Saturday. A family feud was stated to be the cause of the suicide.

Killed: Mr Jage Ram (70) of Bawana village (Delhi) was killed in a collision between a jeep and a truck on the GT Road near Kundli village, 25 km from here, on Saturday. A case has been registered.

Body recovered: The Railway police recovered the body of a woman lying on the railway track between Rathdhanna and Narela railway stations, 15 km from here, on Saturday. The body has not been identified.

Arrested: Rai police arrested Hukam Chand of Delhi during a raid conducted at Basodi village, 18 km from here, on Saturday. A country-made pistol was recovered from him. He was also involved in the unauthorised mining of sand along the Yamuna.

YAMUNANAGAR
Admissions start: Kurukshetra University and the Haryana Government have allowed Seth Jai Parkash Mukand Lal Institute of Engineering and Technology, Radaur, to run B.Tech (Mechanical Engineering and Chemical Engineering) w.e.f. the present academic session. The admissions to these programmes have already started. This was stated by Dr K.L. Johar, Vice-Chairman, Seth Jai Parkash Mukand Lal Institutions of Knowledge and Service.
