An apt tribute to war heroes A war memorial designed by the Department of Architecture, Punjab, is under construction at Ropar. This memorial, which will cost approximately Rs 20 lakh, is being built in Maharaja Ranjit Singh Park situated on the banks of the Sutlej. Everything in this park has been conceived as a memorial, may it be the bridge of understanding, water body or the proposed bronze statue of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. Utmost care has been taken not to cut even single tree while planning the memorial. They have been integrated in the total scheme in a befitting manner. The war memorial has been designed in red sandstone and white marble; red and white denoting the supreme sacrifice and the purity of the soul of those who scarificed their lives. The form of the memorial emerges from a landscaped area and points upwards to the Almighty in whose feet rest the souls of our war heroes. The banks of the Sutlej remained a very active area at the time of Anglo-Sikh wars. There existed 12 Sikh missals (armed militias) who fought wars for the sake of the country. This memorial has 12 compartments each having inscription on granite stone denoting each missal. These surging walls point to a central high mast which symbolises one unifying force. A fibre glass semi-circular dome in kesri colour, to be lit up from within, will be the culminating feature. Promoting tourism In its effort to promote day-long and over-night destinations of Shivaliks in close proximity to the plains of Punjab and Haryana, the Tourism Promotion Society of Chandigarh organised its maiden programme on May 29, 1999 at a resort in Kumar Hatti (Solan district). A cultural evening was conducted by Mr Subhash Ghosh, Director of the Academy of Indian Classic Music and Arts (AICMA). Subhash and his troupe entertained the audience with glimpses of various ragas on the Hawaian Guitar and also with ghazals. The full moon provided an excellent background to the terrace of Misty Meadows Resort, where the programme was performed. The guests, besides local Army and civil officers, also included tourists visiting the resort and nearby areas. Gifts were distributed to the artists by Mrs Neelam Rana, wife of Brig Vikram Rana, Brigade Commander, Kasauli. More promotional programmes are in the pipeline for Ghaggar Bankside, Parwanoo, Koti, Jabli, Barog, Morni, Nalagarh & Kasauli, said Mr Man Mohan Singh, President, of the Tourism Promotion Society of Chandigarh. Upcoming model Model Rohit Sayal, a Pathankot model, is happy, having been chosen Mr Punjab at the "Man of substance" in a fashion modelling competition organised by the Amity Group at Desh Bhagat Yadgar Auditorium, Jalandhar, on February 27. The competition saw 61 young models demonstrating their talent. Noted models and film artistes, including Aditya Birla, Ajay Birla, Miss Guddi Maruti, Sandip Sikka, Rakesh Seth, Navdeep Jay, Sarbjeet Kaur (folk singer) made the event colourful. Rohit Sayal did not conceal his joy while narrating his success story and said that his life-long dream had been fulfilled with this crown. The one-word answer to define himself by noted model Aditya Birla impressed the judge very much when I said Indian. I answered all questions to the point, Rohit Sayal says. Aditya Birla, impressed by the talent and physical fitness of Rohit Sayal, has entered into a contract with the latter for a fashion show in Delhi. Rohit has a word of praise and gratitude for Rasham Kuthila (dress designer), Darpan Suchdev (choreography) and Palamjit (physical instructor) who played an important role in his winning this title. |
