Couple booked for cheating

CHANDIGARH, June 14 — A couple, which was allegedly defrauding people in Janata Labour Colony in Sector 25, by running a daily cash deposit scheme, has been arrested and booked for cheating.

Residents of the colony lodged a complaint that Sri Chand Kishore and his wife, who were running Akansha Finance Company Limited, Burail used to collect sums varying between Rs 10 and Rs 100 on a daily basis by promising higher returns. The police has booked the couple under sections 406, 420 and 120—B of the IPC.

Arrested: A resident of Sector 7, Vicky Kumar, has been arrested for allegedly indulging in eve-teasing near Sukhna Lake. He was booked under Sections 294 of the IPC .

Stolen: A bullet motor cycle (CH-01-E-3665, owned by Harbans Singh of Attawa village, has been reportedly stolen from Sector 34.Back

Literacy drive launched

CHANDIGARH, June 14 — With a view to making Panjab University Campus 100 per cent literate, a total literacy campaign was launched by the Department of Adult, Continuing Education and Extension, Panjab University, here today.

Dr Ajaib Singh, Director of the department, said that to begin with 120 illiterate employees of the campus and 20 dropouts of schools had been identifed by the project in charge, Mrs Renu Gandhi under the literacy programme. The department plans to organise regular and frequent interactions between these learners and experts from various departments like health, nutrition, environment, banking and other welfare departments to enhance their knowledge in these fields.

Student club: The general body members of the International Student Club at a meeting held today criticised the role of Pakistan in Kargil.

The President of the Club, Mr P.S Brar, lecturer Physical Education, has in a release stated that students were prepared to render maximum possible help to the Indian Army and were even ready to donate blood to the injured soldiers. They had planned to stage some plays highlighting the role of the Indian Army these days. Back

'Thanedar Chattar Singh' on the floor

CHANDIGARH, June14 — The 'mahurat' ceremony of Punjabi serial 'Thanedaar Chattar Singh' was held today at Cheema Studio, Sector 35. The serial, as the name suggests, is based on the life of a policeman, with Jaswinder Bhalla, well-known comedy actor of both the big and the small screen, in the lead.

The serial is being written and directed by Keshav Bhrata and produced by Pradeep Bhateja, who has been assisting Bollywood producer-directors K. Pappu and Pranlal Mehta. The serial is planned to be released in September, to coincide with the launch of Punjabi Zee Television channel.

Jaswinder Bhalla, of the 'Chacha-Bhatija' and the 'Jhankatta' series fame, was also recently seen in Jaspal Bhatti's film, 'Mahaul Theek Hai'. His 'Chacha-Bhatija' series has made both Jaswinder as the 'Chacha' and Bal Mukund Sharma, his 'Bhatija', who was also present today, a kind of cult comic figures in Punjab.

At the mahurat today, Jaswinder Bhalla sang the the title song of the serial, "Aise Watan Da Rab Hi Rakha", which would be later sung by Brijesh Ahuja. The serial will also include a track sung by Jaswinder Bhalla.

While talking to newsmen, Pradeep Bhateja said that the shooting of the serial which told a comic story of a Punjabi policeman and a corrupt leader, would take place entirely in the city and its vicinity. The pilot episode of the serial would be shot on June 24 and 25.

The rest of the cast of the serial includes Aarti Puri, also seen in 'Mahaul Theek Hai', Bal Mukund Sharma, Baljit Bala, Vipin Sharma, Rimpy Gill, Sekhon Singh and Naresh Sharma. The music is being given by Sanjeev Santosh, and Laljeet Gill is the production designer. The cameraman of the serial is Jaswinder Jassi and Jassi Dhaliwal is the assistant director.

The chief guest at the mahurat was Sardar Sucha Singh Langha, State Minster of Industries of Punjab.Back

Vegetable prices fluctuate

CHANDIGARH, June 14—The prices of most commonly used vegetables have witnessed a fluctuation in the local market during the past two days.

While the prices of a number of vegetables have increased, on the other hand, certain vegetables have become cheaper in the market during this period.

During a survey of the market it was found that if a kg of cauliflower was available for Rs 14 two days back, the same was available today for Rs 16. The wholesale price of the vegetable has increased from Rs 50 to Rs 60 to Rs 65 per five kg. The price of cabbage has also increased as a kg of the vegetable priced at Rs 6 to Rs 7 a day before yesterday, was available today for Rs 8. The wholesale price of the vegetable has increased from Rs 30 to Rs 40 per five kg.

Similarly, there was slight hike in the price of gourd, as the vegetable priced at Rs 6 a kg just two days back, could be purchased today for Rs 8 a kg. The wholesale price of the vegetable has increased from Rs 25 to Rs 35 per five kg during this period.

The same was the case with lady's finger. A kg of the vegetable, priced between Rs 6 and Rs 8 a kg, was available today for Rs 10. The wholesale price of the vegetable has increased from Rs 20 to Rs 40 per five kg.

According to traders, the prices of these vegetables have increased due to rain in the region, which has affected the plucking and supply process.

On the other hand, prices of certain vegetables have come down during this period. Bittergourd, which was priced at Rs 16 a kg a few days back, was available today for Rs 10 to Rs 12 a kg in different parts of the city. The wholesale price of the vegetable has come down from Rs 60 to Rs 50 per five kg during this period. Similarly, the price of good quality brinjal has come down from Rs 16 a kg to Rs 12 a kg in the retail market, and from Rs 60 to Rs 50 per five kg in the wholesale market due to enhanced arrivals from parts of Punjab and Haryana.

The price of potato has come down from Rs 7 a kg to Rs 4 to Rs 5 a kg in the retail market while the wholesale priceof the vegetable has decreased from Rs 30 to Rs 20 per five kg. The price of good quality capsicum has come down from Rs 24 to Rs 20 a kg, while the wholesale price has dipped from Rs 100 to Rs 80 per five kg.

There was no change in the price of cucumber, tomato, onion and lemon as these were available in the local market for Rs 7, Rs 12, Rs 8 and Rs 24 a kg, respectively.Back


 


Piccadily club win UT cricket league

CHANDIGARH, June 14 — The Piccadily Cricket Club emerged victorious in the final of the UT League-cum-knockout Cricket Tournament when they defeated the Godrej Cricket Club by 59 runs in the match played here yesterday at the Sector 16 cricket stadium. The tournament organised by the UT Cricket Association started on March 20 and received 48 entries. The final match, scheduled to start at 7 a.m. was delayed by five hours due to the pitch being wet.

The PCC batted first and main contributors for it were Gurinder Saini with 31 runs and M.P. Singh with 29 runs. Ubaid Kamal and Girish Bhanot claimed two wickets each by giving away 23 and 29 runs, respectively. The PCC made 162 runs in the allotted 35 overs.

In reply, the Godrej Cricket Club could gather only 103 runs before they were all out. Arun Tuli and Jaswant Rai were the main destroyers of the GCC as they took four and three wickets, respectively. Rajesh Patha made 37 and Sukhwinder scored 25 runs for the losers.

The tournament was sponsored by the Golden Forest group. Ms Vinita Rai, Adviser to the Chandigarh Administration, was the chief guest.

Uttarakhand Trophy: In the final match of the Uttarakhand Trophy cricket tournament played here, the Happy Cricket Club defeated the Victor Cricket Club by 36 runs. Batting first, the HCC made 136 runs, thanks to fine batting by Radhey Dangwal who made 39 runs followed by Ravi and Deepak who scored 18 and 16 runs, respectively. Gurpreet claimed two wickets for 33 runs. In reply, the VCC were bundled out for 96 runs with Lalit of the HCC creating a havoc by taking five wickets for 13 runs. Deepak Gaur was given the man of the series award. The best batsman award went to Radhey and the best fielder award to Shivdeep. Mr Pawan Bansal, Ex-MP of Chandigarh, gave away the prizes.Back
