Farmers' meet :
The State Bank of Patiala, Sirhind city branch, on Monday organised a farmers' meet at Dera Meer Miran village. Mr Randhir Singh Cheema, former minister, Punjab, presided over the function and distributed loans to farmers. Mr Harish Chander, Branch Manager, highlighted the performance of the branch in providing financial assistance to the farmers under various loan schemes of the bank. Farmers were also apprised of new loan schemes being launched by the bank.

JALANDHAR
Prayer meeting:
The Retired Railway Employees Association, held a prayer meeting on Sunday to pay homage to the brave soldiers who died in the Kargil sector. The association, while supporting the government in handling the sensitive situation, has also sent Rs 2,500 to the Army Headquarters as a gesture of help the gallant soldiers.

KHANNA
Foiled:
The Khanna police on Sunday foiled an attempt by members of the Sant Samaj and four Akali Dals opposed to Mr Parkash Singh Badal, to celebrate ‘Masya’ at Dhaki Sahib Maqsoodran. They were stopped near Kaddoh village by the police where some altercation also took place between them and the police. The supporters were led by Mr Karnail Singh Panjauli — President, Youth Wing, Akali Dal (Tohra group), Mr Kuldip Singh Wadala, President, Akali Dal (Democratic), Bhai Jasbir Singh Rode, President, Akali Dal (Panthak), Mr Kedar Surjan Singh — Senior Vice President Akali Dal (Tohra). Their motive was to hold a ‘deewan’ at Dhakki Sahib to express solidarity with Sant Baba Darshan Singh and to urge the Punjab Government to for his release.

PHAGWARA
Dowry case:
On a complaint lodged by Sunita, the police has registered a case under Sections 498-A, 120-B, IPC against her husband Rajesh Kumar, father-in-law Manoharlal , mother-in-law Premlata, sister-in-law Veena Rani and brother-in-law Devraj. However, no arrest has been made so far, the police said here on Sunday. She had complained that her in-laws were torturing her to bring more dowry.

SANGRUR
Seminar:
Mr Arpit Shukla, district police chief, has said the Press should work for the welfare of society by fighting social evils, including the prevailing corruption. Mr Shukla was speaking at a seminar on "Press-Public and Administration" organised by the Dhuri unit of the Punjab Union of Journalists at Dhuri, 15 km from here, on Sunday. A Punjabi monthly magazine in Punjabi "Rajput Soach" and a Punjabi fortnightly, "Golden Patrika", were launched on the occasion.

Basic course: A five-day basic course on the art of living is being organised by the Vyakti Vikas Kendra for Chandigarh police personnel. The camp that started on Monday is being held at the police lines. This is the second such camp for policemen.

PANCHKULA
Workshop concluded:
A 12-day workshop on 'Good Citizenship and Human Values' for students of Bhavan Vidyalaya in Sector 15 concluded at the school premises here on Sunday. The Principal of the school, Ms Shashi Banerjee, who conducted the workshop, disclosed that students were given lessons on sportsman's spirit in all walks of life, honesty, building one's character, importance of a pollution free environment, afforestation and collective responsibility.

Governor's visit: The Governor of Uttar Pradesh, Mr Suraj Bhan, will visit the house of the Deputy Commandant of the ITBP, Joy Lal, in Sector 6 here on Tuesday to express sympathies with the bereaved family. Later Mr Bhan will attend a function at the Gauri Shankar Mandir in Sector 17 and meet a delegation of the owners of roller floor mills in the Industrial Area here.top

SIRSA
Held for murder:
Mohinder Singh of Mandi Dabwali in district was arrested by the police on Saturday on a charge of murdering his brother Darshan Singh on Tuesday last. While giving this information Mr B.S. Sandhu, SSP, said here on Sunday that Jagsir Singh of Odhan village, in a complaint to the police, alleged that his sister Manjeet Kaur was seriously injured and her husband Darshan Singh was murdered with sharp-edged weapons by his brother Mohinder Singh and father Surjeet Singh. The police has registered a case under Sections 302/307/323/324/34, IPC against the accused. The other accused Surjeet Singh has absconded. The reason behind the murder is stated to be a dispute over distribution of agriculture land.

Girl recovered: Sethi Ram of Nohria Gate here was arrested by police on Saturday in a case of kidnapping and raping a minor girl of here. While giving this information, Mr B.S Sandhu, SSP, said here on Sunday a case under Sections 363/355/376, IPC was registered against the accused on April 10 last on a complaint lodged by Nathu Ram Balmiki in which he alleged that his minor daughter (14) was kidnapped by Sethi Ram. During investigation the police recovered the girl from the house of accused last week and he was arrested on Saturday.

Tanker stolen: A water supply tanker from here was allegedly stolen by some unidentified person. A tanker of Lakhmi Chand and Sons of local New Anaj Mandi was being used for free supply of water in city. It has been alleged that on demand of Ram Chand Bhiwaniwala, the tanker was sent for supply of water in the city and was reportedly removed from spot by some unidentified person on May 20 last. No clue has been found so far.

Hurt: Buta Singh and Sukhminder Singh of Jalanana village in this district were seriously injured in an accident here on Sunday. Both of them were going to Gudha village on a scooter when it collided with a jeep near Chormar village in this district. They were shifted to the local Civil Hospital where they were stated to be in stable condition. The alleged accused has absconded.

Complaint: Residents of local Maharaja Agarsain Colony, in a complaint to the Superintending Engineer, Public Health, have demanded that sewerage lines which are lying choked under the main road of this colony be replaced. They also alleged that due to faulty sewerage system the lines were damaged and dirty water and sullage was overflowing from manholes and had stored in vacant plots.

SONEPAT
Protest march:
Irate residents of Khanna Colony took out a procession here on Sunday in protest against the alleged murder of Om Parkash, a resident of the area, at a cold storage near Subzi Mandi of the city. The processionists raised slogans in support of their demands and blocked traffic at Gita Bhavan for more than two hours.

Telegraph services: Telegraphic services from and to here, remained crippled for more than four hours on Sunday following the unannounced load shedding resorted to by the Haryana Vidyut Prasaran Nigam (HVPN) at Model Town here. The load shedding resulted in the disruption of transmission system and caused inordinate delay in the receipt and despatch of all categories of telegrams.top
