Liquor seized:
The police has unearthed a racket of illegal sale of English liquor with the arrest of two persons, including a leader of a political party. The accused leader, who also has a business of sale and purchase of cars at Court Road, and the other person Vijay Kumar were, arrested on Saturday. Fourteen cases of English liquor were seized from their sale out let situated near Vallah Grain Market. A case in this connection had been registered under various Sections of the Excise Act. Both the accused were later produced before a duty magistrate who sent them to judicial custody till July 2.

GURDASPUR
Dowry death:
In a dowry related case, Rita Kumari (19) of Aner Ghiala village in Pathankot subdivision was allegedly murdered by her in-laws on Sunday. Mother of deceased, Mrs Sudarshana, alleged in an FIR registered with Kahnuwan police station that her son-in-law, working for the Indian Navy in connivance of his father. Krishan Singh, brother-in-law Jhankar Singh, mother and sister, had been pressing Rita to bring scooter and gold ornaments from her parents. The girl had reportedly died of poisoning.
Contribution: Members of the Gurdaspur Municipal Employees Union have contributed their one day's salary to the National Defence Fund, according to Ram Mahajan, president of the union. Sita Ram Naam Karcharni Sabha organised a function here on Monday and appealed to the citizens to contribute to the fund. Mr S.K. Sandhu, Deputy Commissioner, was the chief guest. About Rs 21,000 were collected on the occasion for the said fund. The sabha has decided to give Rs 10,000 each to the families of two soldiers, who had sacrificed their lives while fighting the enemy in Kargil sector.
Resentment: Resentment prevails among the Punjab Government pensioner about the failure of the government to implement recommendations of the Fourth Pay Commission. Mr Satpal Singh Bedi, press secretary of the association, said the central formulae to keep at par the pensioners who retired before 1996 and who retired afterwards had not been implemented.
Arrested: The police today arrested Lovely, of Majra in Himachal Pradesh, and Deepak Raj, of Dinanagar in the district, on the charges of smuggling illicit liquor from Himachal Pradesh to Punjab and seized 165 bottles from their possession. According to Mr Varinder Kumar, SSP, a case under Sections 61, 1 and 14 of the Excise Act had been registered against the accused.

KHANNA
Wife killed:
Ashok Kumar, a migrant labour, killed his wife on Sunday after an altercation. The accused reportedly did not like his wife's visit to her parent's house and in a rage hit her with a stick on the head. She died on the spot. The police has registered a case under Section 304 of the IPC and started investigations. Ashok Kumar is, however, absconding.

MOGA
Opium smuggling:
The CIA staff has arrested Gurmel Singh, member of a gang indulging in opium smuggling from Uttar Pradesh and seized half kg opium from his possession. The SSP said the accused was being interrogated. He said the police had also busted a gang indulging in poppy husk smuggling a few days ago and had seized 35 bags of poppy husk.
Protest:
At least 200 Registered Medical Practitioners (RMP) from all over the district blocked traffic in Baghapurana town, 15 km from here on Sunday for about half-an-hour to protest against the government for uprooting them and not allowing them to run their clinics. They later raised slogans against Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and State Health Minister. Earlier, they staged demonstrations, organised a protest march and urged the government to withdraw the restrictions imposed on them. A deputation of RMP's also met Sardar Sadhu Singh, MLA, and apprised him of the situation.
Urged:
Members of the BJP urged the district administration on Monday to take action against one of the security guards of a politician of Baghapurana constituency for molesting a girl of Baghapurana town a few days ago. They said the guard was let off due to political pressure.

PATIALA
Smuggler killed:
An alleged poppy smuggler was killed in an encounter with the police near here on Sunday and 20 kg of poppy husk was also seized, official sources said here. A police party intercepted a gang of seven smugglers at Dhablan village, 15 km from here, on being challenged, they opened fire, injuring Assistant Sub-Inspector Ram Avtar. The police returned fire, killing one of the smugglers while the others managed to escape. The identity of the alleged smuggler, aged about 40, however, could not be established.

Ear-rings found: Ms Shalani Sharma, a teacher in Senior Secondary School, Sector 16, found two gold ear-rings in the try room of a shop in Sector 17 here on Saturday. The ear-rings were handed over to the proprietor of the shop.
Tributes paid: A congregation of the Anglican Church on Monday paid tributes to the Indian soldiers and officers who sacrificed their lives while fighting intruders in Kargil. A two-minute silence was observed and prayers were held for early recovery of soldiers and officers undergoing treatment at various military hospitals.
Blood donation: The Friends Blood Donors and Welfare Association will organise a blood donation camp on Wednesday. The Chandigarh Adventurers Association will hold a blood donation camp at Srinagar on July 9, separate press releases of the respective associations said.
Tubewell employees: Members of the Tubewell Corporation Employees Welfare Union have decided to donate one day's salary towards the National Defence Fund, according to a press note issued on Monday by Mr Om Parkash and Mr S.S. Walia, President and general Secretary of the union.
Workshop: The Rotract (Chandigarh) Midtown will open its 'Workshop-99', at Shivalik Public School, Sector 41, on Tuesday. The workshop, for young persons, will include pot-making, computer graphics, painting, and poster-making.
Function: The local unit of the BJP will organise a function to observe 'Kashmir Day' in Sector 5 here on Wednesday. Homage will be paid to the martyrs who sacrificed their lives in Kargil-Dras sector.
Elected: The following have been elected office-beares of the Tyagi Brahmin Sabha: President — Mr C.P. Tyagi; Vice-President — Mr S.L. Tyagi; Secretary — Mr Devraj Tyagi; and Treasurer — Mr Satish Tyagi.

Nominated: The Punjab government has nominated Mr Dhanwant Singh and Mr Matu Ram Chairman and Vice-Chairman of the Market Committee here.

PANCHKULA
Homage paid:
The local Senior Citizen's Council, in a meeting held on Monday, paid homage to Capt Deepak Guleria of Rashtriya Rifles and Joy Lal, Deputy Commandant of ITBP, who laid down their lives fighting insurgency in Kashmir. The council resolved to make a contribution towards the Prime Minister's Relief Fund.

FARIDABAD
Effigy burnt:
An effigy of Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, was burnt here in Sector 5 on Sunday in protest against Pakistan’s role in Kargil. Mr Gulshan Bagga, a senior leader of the Haryana Vikas Party said the local brick kiln owners had also decided to donate Rs 5 lakh to Haryana Chief Minister’s Relief Fund for Kargil martyrs.
Suicide: Two persons died here on Sunday under mysterious circumstances. A 35-year-old person died when he set himself on fire. The reason for his committing suicide could not be known. In second case, Rakesh (24), a resident of Dhauj village, 78 km from here, died when he fell from the tractor trailer on which he was going to a nearby village.
Thefts: Three scooter-borne persons robbed a person of Rs 1500 at gun point in Saran village on Saturday night. The persons also robbed another person later. In another case of theft, thieves broke into the house of Jasrat Singh in Ballabhgarh and decamped with cash and jewellery. The police has registered the cases.
