Relief to martyrs inadequate: Cong SONEPAT, June 21 Mr Dharampal Singh Malik, former president of the Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee, has denounced Pakistan for its barbaric and inhuman acts committed on Indian Army officers and jawans after capturing them while they were on a patrol duty in the Kaksar sector of Jammu and Kashmir on May 14. Addressing party workers here yesterday, he said the Pakistani action was a violation of the universal declaration of human rights. He defended the decision of the party to support the Central Government in countering the Pak action. The meeting was attended among others, by Mrs Shanti Rathi, Mr Hukam Singh Dahiya, Mr Shyam Dass Mukhija, all former ministers, Mr Satnarain Aggarwal, former DCC chief, and Mr Satpal Chauhan, a member of the HCC. The meeting placed on record deep sense of gratitude for supreme sacrifices made by the valiant soldiers and conveyed sympathies to the bereaved families. By another resolution, the meeting hailed the decision of the AICC President, Mrs Sonia Gandhi, to visit the state on June 25 for expressing sympathy with martyrs' families. The meeting condemned the discriminatory attitude of Doordarshan and AIR in not giving an equitable and fair treatment to the Congress compared to the caretaker government of Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee. The meeting also criticised the Bansi Lal government's attitude towards the martyrs who had laid down their lives in the Kargil sector. The compensation announced by the state government for the families of the Army Officers and jawans killed, according to their ranks, was inadequate. It should be raised to Rs 10 lakh irrespective of the rank, the meeting demanded. The meeting pointed out that maximum casualties have so far been from Haryana and the present government was not taking any concrete steps for the welfare of the bereaved families. It also demanded that the government should name roads of the native villages of the martyrs after them and also erect their statues in the villages. It demanded that the state government should provide jobs to a member each of all martyrs' families and allot a 500 yards residential plot to them. Meanwhile, a prayer meeting was organised at Rohna village, about 25 km from here, yesterday to pay homage to the martyr Ravinder (20) who laid down his life on June 6 while fighting the Pakistan-backed infiltrators in the Kargil sector. A large number of inhabitants of the village and adjoining areas, including ex-servicemen, participated in the meeting. A "shaheed samark samiti" was constituted on the occasion and it decided to erect a statue of the martyr in the village. Mr Sandeep Garg,
Additional Deputy Commissioner, handed over a cheque of
Rs 15,000 on behalf of the District Red Cross Society to
Mrs Moorti Devi, mother of the martyr at the meeting. |
