AMRITSAR
NSUI unit:
The newly appointed President of the Amritsar unit of the National Students Union of India, Mr Inder Pal Singh Sandhu, has dissolved the union's district unit and the units in various academic institutions with immediate effect.

BARNALA
Court boycotted:
On a call given by the Barnala Bar Association, lawyers boycotted court work on Monday. They were protesting against the alleged encroachment of the local judicial complex's land by the Soil Conservation Department.

FEROZEPORE
Medical camp:
Over 300 patients were examined at a medical camp held in ward no. 3 in cantonment area here on Monday. They were provided medicines free of cost.

Meeting held: A meeting of the Ferozepore Vikas Council was held here under the chairmanship of Mr Satyapal Baghi. The council decided to submit a memorandum demanding the setting up of an ordnance factory to the Union Defence Minister George Fernandes. It also demanded the withdrawal of police cases registered against four persons , who allegedly gheraoed the car of the Minister for Local Bodies, Labour and Employment, Mr Balramji Dass Tandon, here, a few days ago.

GURDASPUR
Panchayats' complaint:
In a complaint to the SSP, the panchayats of Thundi, Nadala, Wazirpur Afghana, Islampur, Salaach, Chountra, Noushehra, Shamsherpur, Sangour and Malook Chack said that Kulwantvir Singh, ASI, posted at Dorangla police station and Harbhajan Singh of Home Guard along with their colleagues beat up Harbans Singh (73) with lathies on Sunday when he was going to his Chountra village. Panchayat members demanded the registration of a case.

KAPURTHALA
Death anniversary:
The death anniversary of Jaimal Singh Padda, a Naxalite leader of the state who was gunned down by militants in his native Lokhan ke Padde village will be observed on March 17, according to Mr Mohinder Singh Padda, a leader of the Kirti Kisan Union.

KHANNA
Blood donation:
To mark the tercentenary of the Khalsa, a blood donation camp will be organised on March 17 by the International Shiromani Sant Khalsa Foundation at Tapoban Dhakki Saheb, Maksudra, about 20 km from here. The Governor will inaugurate the camp.

KHARAR
Budget passed:
The local municipal committee has passed its Rs 2.16 crore budget for the next financial year at a meeting held here on Monday. Mr Ranbir Singh, President and Mr Lachman Singh, Executive Officer of the committee, said the budget estimates for the current financial year were Rs 143 lakh. The committee proposes to spend Rs 18 lakh on water supply and sewerage.

New SDM: Mr Amarjit Singh Dhindsa, took over as SDM here on Monday. The post was vacant since January 1 this year when Mr Avtar Chand Sharma was transferred from here.

LUDHIANA
Challaned:
As many as 2993 vehicles were challaned for violating traffic rules and Rs 12,62,350 were collected as fines from them in the district, in February. Mr Arun Goel, Deputy Commissioner, said while addressing the monthly meeting of the traffic control committee here on Monday.

Course on cast iron: A three-day course on melting and defect analysis of cast iron was jointly organised by the R and D Centre for Bicycle and Sewing machine, Ludhiana and Institute for Machine Tools Technology, Batala, concluded on March 11. Experts from Indian Institute of Casting and Foundry Technology , Ranchi delivered lectures.

HOD Entomology: Dr Darshan Singh, senior Professor of Entomology has joined as Head, Department of Entomology, Punjab Agriculture University, Ludhiana. He has experience of 27 years in entomology research.

Symposium: A symposium on myocardial infection was held on Sunday at Christian Medical College. Eminent cardiologists, including Dr H.S. Rissan and Dr R. Kasliwal from Escorts, and Dr Balbir Singh from Batra Hospital, New Delhi, felt that 50 per cent of the patients who died of heart attacks could be saved if the disease was diagnosed early.

NANGAL
MC budget:
The municipal committee here in its budget passed recently has proposed to spend Rs 5 crore on the development works in the town. A sum of Rs 1 crore will be spent on providing water supply and sewerage in the town. The earnings of the committee is expected to be around Rs 8.31 crore.

Tarksheel Society:

Honoured:
The name of Dr Manjula Sehdev, Professor and Head, Maharshi Valmiki Chair, Punjabi University, has been included in the Who's Who in the World-2000, USA, in its 17th edition, according to a varsity release here on Monday.

NSS camp: A 10-day NSS camp organised by NSS volunteers of the Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology concluded here on Sunday. Their activities included tree plantation, cleanliness campaign and eye care camp.

Selected: Dr G.S. Batra, Reader in the Department of Business Management, Punjabi University, here has been selected for the Young Researcher Award by the Indian Accounting Association, according to a press release of the varsity here on Monday.

Blood donated: A blood donation camp was organised jointly by Lions Club, Patiala citizen, and Lions Club, Patiala Fort on Sunday at Maharaja Palace here. The camp was inaugurated by state minister Raja Narinder Singh. More than 80 volunteers donated the blood. top

Parishad: Mr Vishav Vir Sharma has been elected President of the All-India Uttar Pradesh and Bihar Jan Kalyan Parishad. The Parishad will organise a convention here from May 7 to 9 to focus attention on the genuine problems of its members. The parishad has also demanded a direct train route between Chandigarh, Lucknow and Patna. The parishad also demanded land for its bhavan in the city and representation on various committees of the administration.

Teachers: The Government Lecturers’ Welfare Association Chandigarh on Tuesday submitted a memorandum to Mrs Anuradha Gupta, Home Secretary, regarding the revision of pay scales and other pending demands of the teachers. It also presented a memorandum regarding the lathi charge on the teachers on March 12.

SAS NAGAR
Approach road: The approach road to Jagatpura is undergoing repair and a 4 km-stretch connecting Phase XI, SAS Nagar, with Sector 47, Chandigarh, has developed potholes. The repair work has started in Punjab while the stretch in Chandigarh is still unrepaired.top

SHAHABAD
Dharna staged:
Workers of the Bharatiya Kisan Union held a demonstration on Monday. They also staged a dharna in front of the office of the Executive Engineer, Haryana Vidyut Parsaran Nigam in support of their demands. The president of the district BKU unit, Mr Ramdia said the union would intensify its agitation if its demands were not accepted by March 21.

Teachers' demand: Non-government college teachers of Haryana have urged the Chief Minister, Mr Bansi Lal, to release the new pay scales recommended by the UGC. In a statement issued here on Tuesday, the president of the Haryana Teachers Union, Mr D.S Dhaliwal, welcomed the decision of the state government for releasing their salary for the strike period during the countrywide agitation of the college teachers last year.

SONEPAT
Dacoits kill 2:
A group of dacoits entered the house of Mr Ram Lal Malhotra at Ganaur town, 16 km from here on the night of Monday and ransacked it after attacking five members. Mrs Shakuntala (45) wife of Mr Ram Lal Malhotra, and her son Parveen later succumbed to their injuries. The condition of Mr Ram Lal Malhotra, his elder son Vijay and his daughter Kavita is stated to be critical.

Gang busted: With the arrest of four persons, the city police claims to have busted an inter-state gang of vehicle thieves operating in the district and its adjoining areas of Narela in Delhi. The Senior Superintendent of Police said here on Tuesday that the arrested persons had been identified as Virender, alias Kala, and Satbir of Pipli Khera village and Charan Singh of Dabesare village. The police recovered two Maruti cars from their possession.top

Hurt:
Driver Narinderpal and cleaner Sanjay were injured seriously when their truck fell down into about 500-foot-deep khud near Dalli village, about 12 km from here from Ghagus on Sunday. The driver was referred to the PGI, Chandigarh.
