Customs down Tatas; Chandigarh beaten

HYDERABAD, March 16 (PTI) — Debutants Customs and Central Excise, south zone runners-up Karnataka, Madhya Bharat and Services recorded their maiden wins in contrasting fashion in the National Hockey Championship here today.

Customs scored a narrow 2-1 victory over new entrants Tata Sports in an all-Mumbai group "G" league tie while Madhya Bharat drubbed Delhi 5-2 and Services blanked out Kerala 10-0, with a four-goal strike by Cyprian Lakra standing out in the Army men’s runaway victory.

Earlier, in the morning session hosts Hyderabad defeated Gujarat 2-1 in group "B" but still went out of quarter-final reckoning, India Postal routed Nagaland 6-1 (group "B") and Karnataka swamped Chandigarh 7-3 in group "G".

The best match of the day was the hard-fought contest between Mumbai rivals Customs and Tatas.

After equal exchanges in the initial stages of the match, Customs drew first blood in the 16th minute through a penalty corner conversion by Rahul Singh who scooped in the rebound off Tatas goalkeeper A.P. Girish’s pads after the latter had stopped a rasping drive by Rajinder.

Down by a goal, Tatas put pressure on the rival defence and scored the equaliser in the 27th minute through unmarked Manoj Lokhande and the first half ended with a 1-1 scoreline.

Tata Sports missed going ahead eleven minutes into the second half when a goalbound deflection by Lokhande narrowly missed the target before Adolf notched the winning goal for Customs in the 59th minute.

South Zone runners-up, Karnataka thrashed Chandigarh 7-3 in their opening group-G league encounter while Indian Post and Telegraph outplayed Nagaland 6-1 to register their fourth straight win from group-B in the National Hockey Championship here today.

Hosts Hyderabad completed their league engagements by defeating Gujarat 2-1 in another group-B encounter.

With the league phase at half-way stage, Karnataka began their campaign when Rama Rao converted a penalty corner hit in the fifth minute of the match.

However, five minutes later Chandigarh equalised through a field goal with Navdeep Singh finding the net off a well calculated pass by Jaswinder Singh on the left flank.

Chandigarh shot into the lead in the 17th minute when Jaswinder Singh slammed home a rebound following a penalty corner hit taken by Baldev Singh which rebounded off Karnataka custodian Bopanna’s pads.

However, their joy was shortlived, as Karnataka earned a penalty stroke in the 27th minute which was easily converted by Shanmugam to level the score at 2-all.

Just before half time, Karnataka took the lead again through Arjun Halappa who scored the goal following a penalty corner.

Soon after the breather, Karnataka pumped in two more goals in a row through centre forward Samson Fernandez and Bimal Lakra in the 39th and 40th minutes respectively to increase the lead.

The Karnataka defence relaxed a little bit at this juncture and conceded a penalty corner which was converted by skipper Baldev Singh in the 47th minute to reduce the margin.

The last two goals for Karnataka came through field goals scored by Prakash Chalke (50th minute) and through Samson Fernandez (62nd minute).

Indian Post and Telegraph kept their winning spree by outplaying Nagaland 6-1 after taking a huge lead of 5-0 at the interval.

The domination of the postal forwards created confusion in the Nagaland camp, who played an erratic game without any constructive moves. This is Postals’ fifth victory so far.

Hosts Hyderabad made their exit from the championship despite beating Gujarat as they had lost to the Indian Post and Telegraph and Uttar Pradesh and drew with CISF while Gujarat also completed their league formalities with a four loss record and one win over Nagaland.

Results (group B): Hyderabad 2 ( Sukhdev 1 (32nd), Ilyas Ahmed 1 (35th) beat Gujarat 1 (Lakhanlal 1 (25th). (half time 2-1).

India Postal 6 (Guldeep Singh 1 (4th), Nirmal Singh 2 (6th, 11th), Aftabuddin 1 (15th), Siraj-ul-Haq 1 (18th), D.P. Singh 1 (61th) beat Nagaland 1 (66th). (half time: 5-0).

Group-G : Karnataka 7 (Rama Rao 1 (5th), Shanmugam 1 (2nd), Arjun Halappa 1 (28th), Samson Fernandez 2 (39th, 62nd), Bimal Lakra 1 (40th), Prakash Chalke 1 (50th) beat Chandigarh 3 (Navdeep Singh 1 (10th), Jaswinder Singh 1 (17th), Baldev Singh 1 (47th). (half time : 3-2).

Windies rout Aussies by 10 wickets

KINGSTON, March 16 (Reuters) — Brian Lara’s West Indies put the smile back on the face of Caribbean cricket with a 10-wicket victory over Australia in the second Test today.

Resuming at 157 for eight on the fourth day, Australia made another 20 runs to avoid an innings defeat. But West Indies needed to score just three runs to win which they achieved in the first over of their second innings.

The long overdue triumph — their first in seven Tests -avenged the West Indies debacle in last week’s opening Test when they were dismissed for their lowest Test score of 51.

More importantly, it probably cemented Lara’s future as captain. He was on a two-Test trial following the 5-0 rout in South Africa.

"I’m very happy and I think the guys have dedicated this victory to the bowlers. They toiled day in and day out in South Africa and the batters are thankful for their efforts," Lara said.

"I’m definitely happy but I’m not going to get carried away. We’ve got to get together as a team of batters and get it together on a regular basis."

Lara’s brilliant double century in the first innings had given both him and his team fresh belief in themselves.

Confidence flooded back as off-spin newcomer Nehemiah Perry — who took five for 70 in his first Test in the second innings — ripped into what once seemed an impregnable Australian batting line-up.

The party started early although the Australian tail did manage to hit the 18 runs required to make West Indies bat for a second time.

Resuming at 157 for eight, Jason Gillespie was quickly caught behind by Ridley Jacobs off Courtney Walsh for seven.

But last-pair Stuart MaCgill and Glenn McGrath spared Australia the humiliation of an innings defeat by taking the total to 177.

Opener Suruj Ragoonath had the pleasure of hitting the winning runs in the first over of the West Indies second innings.

DHAKA, March 16 (PTI) — Pakistan crushed an inexperienced Bangladesh by 152 runs in a day-night international cricket match here tonight.

Though Pakistan skipper Wasim Akram, in the charitable mood that he was, used part-time bowlers Ijaz Ahmed, Saeed Anwar and Wajatullah Wasti after he and Shoaib Akhtar (2/15) did the initial damage but the Bangla batsmen failed against the less serious Pakistani attack too.

Wasti, playing in his first one-dayer, scalped three wickets for 33 runs with his gentle spin. Anwar also enjoyed the evening under the light at the Bangabandhu National Stadium, claiming two for nine.

Bangladesh left-arm spinner Mohammed Rafiq thrilled the 30,000 strong crowd with a quickfire 29 runs off 19 deliveries which included four fours and a superb six.

Former skipper Akram Khan made a patient 28 off 82 balls, hitting two fours, after Akram and Akhtar had reduced the hosts to 30-3. He was caught behind by Moin Khan off Wasti.

The rest of the Bangladesh batsmen struggled and, with the exception of Rokon al-Shahriar (17) and Aminul Islam (16) all failed to reach double figures.

Azhar must count himself lucky
By Abhijit Chatterjee
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, March 16 — In any team game, be it football, hockey, the Davis Cup in international tennis or even cricket, there will always be a captain of the team. But the role of the cricket captain is much more than that of a captain of any other team game. The captain of a hockey or a football team have, comparatively speaking, little work to do when equated with a cricket captain.

The successful cricket captain must be a good tactician, a shrewd student of the game, a leader of men and, more important, must be a shrewd gambler. No cricket captain in the history of the game has ever done well without being a good gambler at crucial moments.

Mohammad Azharuddin must count himself lucky for being appointed captain of the Indian cricket team right up to the World Cup. Not only has the Hyderabad player lost his own form but has also not been able to boost up the performance of the squad. More important, he has not been able to gamble at crucial moments. It is these against the run of play gambles which more often than not have translated a defeat into a victory.

But the national selectors had really no choice when they met at Mumbai on Monday to select the Indian captain for the three-nation tournament involving India , Pakistan and Sri Lanka, the Sharjah tournament next month and the World Cup, commencing in England from mid-May. The only other obvious contender for the post, Sachin Tendulkur, himself saying explicitly that he was not interested in the job the national selectors had no option but to opt for Azharuddin.

The names of players like Saurav Ganguly, Ajay Jadeja (who has been vice-captain of the Indian squad for quite some time now) as also that of Anil Kumble were also in the grapevine prior to the Mumbai meeting. But the names of these players were not even discussed at Monday's meeting. In fact, the odds were stacked heavily against all these contenders for the top post. No panel would be willing to leave India's campaign in the World Cup to a raw hand.

The choice of Azharuddin was not unexpected especially since the President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, Mr Raj Singh Dungarpur, had said recently that there was no need to change the Indian skipper. But by saying so he has condemned the Indian team to play one player "short" in all the games from now right up to the World Cup.

Over the years Azharuddin has got the tag of a lucky captain. So far the Indian captain has lead India in 161 one-day internationals, won 84, lost 69 while there was no result in six matches. Two matches ended in a tie. Last year the Indian squad played a total of 40 one-day internationals, won 24, lost 14 while there was no result in two matches. And in the process India won quite a few one-day titles. This year India have so far played five one-day internationals, winning two and losing two.

What should be worrying the pundits is the woeful fall in the form of the Indian skipper. He has gone without scoring a century in the last 14 one-day ties he has played. And even when he has scored moderate scores they have lacked character and class. Time and again he has been out to loose deliveries . His shuffling around the wicket would, at times, embarrass even a novice.

More important, the fielding of the Indian skipper has gone to pieces. Once known for his panther-like prowling on the field, today he is pale shadow of his former self. And as his fielding has slipped so also has the fielding of the whole team slipped and even an expert like Bobby Simpson, the former Australian skipper, has not been able to lift up the Indian fielding.

The World Cup might well be Azharuddin's swan song in international cricket. If India manage to do well then only can the Indian skipper decide for himself when he wants to hang up his boots or rather his bat. But India fare badly he might well be the first casualty.

Lewis let the fight 'slip away'

LONDON, March 16 (AP) — Lennox Lewis has only himself to blame for not taking all three world heavyweight titles belts and avoiding the controversial drawn ending to Saturday’s fight.

According to British Press reports, he should have nailed Evander Holyfield in the fifth.

While the bulk of British headlines still centred on the WBC champion being robbed of Holyfield’s WBA and IBF crowns by the judges at Madison Square Garden, another theme was that Lewis should have taken more control of his own destiny.

"Lewis lets prize escape,’’ was the headline in yesterday’s edition of the Independent.

The paper reported that titles at this level are not given up easily and had to be "taken away’’ from the holder.

"Boxing is not about the sheer volume of blows but about the right blows at the right time,’’ the paper said.

"Even though his performance exceeded most people’s expectations, Lewis did not make the most of his opportunities to finish Holyfield off, and towards the end of the fifth he eased back in order to preserve himself from danger.’’

The statistics revealed Lewis landed 248 more punches than Holyfield but the judges carded a draw.

The Daily Mail counterbalanced its "big fight farce’’ back-page headline with an inside story headed: "Lennox misses the punchline.’’

"Lewis has only himself to blame...if he had moved in for the kill when he had Holyfield in trouble there would be no discussion about the fairness of this controversial and damaging decision,’’ the paper reported.

After working so hard to get into that finishing position, he paid a heavy — some will say unfair — price for that excessive caution.

"Morally, Lewis may well have been the winner on the night... but not historically,’’ the Mail said. "By his own concession he did not go for the kill because I believed I was doing enough to win the fight anyway.’’

The tabloid Sun newspaper, Britain’s biggest selling daily, condemned the outcome but reported that Lewis let the fight slip away in the fifth.

"He had battered Holyfield with several clubbing punches and there was no doubt (Holyfield) was badly hurt,’’ said columnist Colin Hart, who is well known to US fight journalists.

But instead of launching himself at Holyfield to knock him out, Lewis hesitated, as he has done the past.

"Once again Lewis was playing a game of chess in the ring,’’ Hart wrote. And in the couple of moments he took to make up his mind, the moment had gone.’’

However, Larry O’Connell, one of three judges who scored the fight, said he thought Lewis may have edged Holyfield.

South African Judge Stanley Christodoulou adjudged Lewis the winner by 116-113, while American Eugenia Williams scored Holyfield a 115-113 winner.

O’Connell, who scored the fight 115-115 and contributed heavily to the draw, said he was surprised he had given a draw.

"I felt it could have gone marginally to Lennox Lewis,’’ the British Judge was quoted saying in Evening Standard newspaper.

"I feel very sorry for Lennox, he has done everything in the world you could have asked for him.’’

The 60-year-old, who has been a boxing official for years, said there was absolutely no way the fight was fixed.

"I’m a man of integrity and honesty and I made my decision. My honesty and integrity are the reasons I was chosen to do this fight,’’ he said.

It’s not my style to give a draw. Nobody likes to give a draw because people think you are not man enough to give a result either way.

"If I made a mistake then I am sorry for Lewis.’’

Meanwhile, the WBC champion’s manager, Frank Maloney, maintained in a British Television interview that Lewis had been robbed and said that a rematch in London was a solution to the question of who is the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world.

Jayasuriya to be fit for World Cup

COLOMBO, March 16 (AP) — Sri Lanka's top opening batsman Sanath Jayasuriya, who sustained injuries during his team's Australia tour, said yesterday he will be fit for the World Cup but will miss the upcoming three nation tournament in India.

"I have started practice and in fact I will be playing in a club tournament next week," Jayasuriya said.

"I could have had gone to India to play in the triangular series, I can bat, but I don't know if I can field 100 per cent," Jayasuriya said during a function to unveil the World Cup that will tour cricket-playing nations before the World Cup starts in England in May, Sri Lanka won the last World Cup.

"My recovery has been good and I am sure I will be 100 per cent fit both as a batsman and a fielder before the World Cup," said Jayasuriya, who is recovering from a fracture.

Sri Lanka will play against India and Pakistan during the triangular series to be held in India later this month.

Match drawn; Delhi in last eight

CUTTACK, March 16 (PTI) — Prabhanjan Mallick struck a century in both innings by cracking an unbeaten 100 in the second essay but Delhi made it to quarterfinals despite conceding the first innings lead to Orissa as their Ranji Trophy super league tie ended in a draw here today.

Delhi claimed three points to aggregate 19 and finished second in group ‘B’ to qualify with Tamil Nadu (21) while Maharashtra (18) were edged out of the race.

Orissa restricted Delhi, overnight 237 for five, to 303 all out to gain a 158-run first innings lead but skipper Shiv Sundar Das chose not to enforce the follow on.

A fluent unbeaten hundred by Mallick, who made 113 in the first innings, helped the hosts reach 211 for five when the match ended.

Delhi, desperate to ensure that they made the knock-out round by not losing the match, achieved that. Promising all-rounder Virender Sehwag, overnight unbeaten 141, notched 163 while Nikhil Chopra made 74. Their 236-run sixth wicket stand rescued Delhi, who were tottering at 22 for five at one stage yesterday.

Orissa took five points to finish with a tally of 13.

Resuming at overnight 237 for five, Delhi lost their sixth wicket when Chopra holed out off-spinner Sanjay Satpathy to Shiv Sundar Das at mid-on before the last five wickets fell for 45 runs. Test discard Debashish Mohanty claimed five wickets for 67 runs.

Brief scores: Orissa - 561 and 211 for five (Mallick 100 not out, Mohanty 26 not out; R Sanghvi 2/102) vs Delhi - 303 (Sehwag 163, Chopra 74; Mohanty 5-67).

Sehwag and Chopra added 236 runs for the sixth wicket in 280 minutes with Chopra’s knock, spread over 280 minutes, containing nine fours.

Sehwag, who began this morning in an attacking mood, fell soon after Chopra was out when he edged Mohanty to the slips where Shahid Khan took the catch. The allrounder’s 163 came in 303 minutes and included 22 boundaries and two sixes.

Orissa started disastrously in the second innings with the openers Das (11) and P Jayachandra (12) returning cheaply. While Das was caught by Sehwag off medium pacer Amit Suman Jha, Jayachandra offered a catch to the same fielder off the other pacer Arun Singh.

Mallick, however, batted solidly though wickets kept tumbling at the other end. He added 85 runs for the sixth wicket with Mohanty (26 not out) in 72 minutes.

Mallick reached his century in 174 minutes, his knock containing 10 fours and two sixes. The match ended as soon as he reached the three figure mark. For Delhi, left arm spinner Rahul Sanghvi claimed two for 102.

Salgaocar move ahead; E. Bengal held

CALCUTTA, March 16 (PTI) — Leaders Salgaocar took a giant leap in their title campaign by blanking fellow Goan rivals Churchill Brothers 2-0 in a crucial super six tie of the National Football League here today.

After a barren and sedate first half, the winners struck twice in the latter session of the second leg encounter through Jules Alberto and Domingos Vaz to take their tally to 17 points from eight matches.

The Goa league champions are four points clear of East Bengal, now placed second on 13 points after drawing 1-1 with F C Kochin in the other match of the day.

The defeat at the Rabindra Sarobar Stadium also jeopardised Churchill’s title ambitions as they now lie third with 12 points.

The encounter between the two formidable Goa outfits livened up in the second half as both teams went on the offensive creating a number of positive chances.

Salgaocar took the lead in the 55th minute as Jules Alberto headed home a Bruno Coutinho freekick. The header grazed the post and went in.

The winners consolidated their position in the 80th minute following a midfield move initiated by substitute Savio Medeira.

Off Coutinho, the ball came to Francis Coelho who essayed a fine pass to unmarked Domingo. Finding himself in the clear, the seasoned campaigner cut into the box, and dodging past an onrushing Churchill custodian Edward Ansah, put the ball in.

East Bangal held

Strong contenders East Bengal put their title hopes in jeopardy by playing out a scrappy 1-1 draw against unfancied F C Kochin in a ‘super six’ second leg match of the National Football League here today.

The local giants had themselves to blame for the setback as they not only squandered scoring opportunities, but allowed their opponents to restore parity just one minute before the long whistle, shattering hopes of earning full points to consolidate their position in the points table.

After a barren opening session, East Bengal shot into the lead just five minutes before the long whistle through striker Raman Vijayan, but the Kerala outfit drew level in the dying seconds through Rozario to leave the East Bengal fans at the Salt Lake stadium stunned.

With this drawn encounter, East Bengal have 13 points to their credit from eight matches while F C Kochin, who are languishing at the bottom of the table, have just three points from eight outings.

It was a truly pathetic performance by the home team as their forwards missed chances with exasperating regularity while their defenders also put up a rather poor show in this crucial match.

Star striker Baichung Bhutia, who joined the team after a fairly long gap, looked totally off-colour and was guilty of muffing up two simple scoring chances.

F C Kochin played reasonably well in the opening session to not only keep the strong East Bengal forwards at bay but also initiate raids into the rival defence.

The Kerala outfit saw two easy chances go abegging in quick succession which could have put them in the lead, but poor control and marksmanship prevented them from scoring.

Capitalising on a defensive lapse, Karunakar Raj could have drawn first blood for the Kerala team in the 18th minute, but his volley narrowly missed the target with East Bengal custodian Kalyan Choubey at his mercy.

Three minutes later, Mohammed Najib frittered away an easy scoring opportunity for F C Kochin, managing only a feeble grounder from inside the box with none of the defenders in position.

The local giants, handicapped by the non-availability of two key midfielders Ranjan Dey and Emmanuel Opuku, looked quite vulnerable in the midfield while the defence also looked a little shaky.

The home team also came close to opening their account in the 15th minute of the opening session but defender Suley Mussah could not control his kick from inside the box with only custodian Naseem Akhtar in front of him.

Dena Bank retain team title

CHANDIGARH, March 16 (BOSR) — Holders Dena Bank retained the men's team championship in the All-India Inter-Bank Table Tennis Tournament being played here at the Sector 23 TT hall today. In the final, Dena Bank had to struggle hard to overcome the spirited challenge of Reserve Bank of India before winning at 3-1.

The top seed in singles, Deepak Thukral playing for Dena Bank in the first singles, did not allow his rival Souvik Roy of RBI to dominate and disposed of S. Roy, the second seed in singles in two straight games. The former Punjab player Deepak won at 21-13, 21-14. However the young Rajdeep Sarkar went down fighting to another top ranking player of RBI Mukul Boro in three extended games which disappointed the Dena Bank camp and here Mukul triumphed at 13-21, 26-24, 21-18. Now at 1-1, Sunil Babras of Dena Bank took the challenge of outwitting the less experienced Gagan Choudhary whom Sunil dethroned at 21-17, 21-12. The score read at 2-1 in favour of Dena Bank who put up in the reverse singles, international Deepak Thukral against Mukul Boro. The clash turned out to be a tame affair for Deepak who made short work of Mukul at 21-18, 21-12 and the team title for its employer and the hosts Dena Bank. This was the sixteenth consecutive title for the Dena Bank and its captain and former national champion Kamlesh Mehta was a happy man.

The individual events also started in both men's and women's sections.
