Mann's action 'harmful' CHANDIGARH, March 21 The Haryana Lok Dal (Rashtriya) President and Leader of Opposition, Mr Om Prakash Chautala, has demanded that the Punjab Government and the Centre should take firm action against the SAD (A) President, Mr Simranjit Singh Mann, for indulging in the "anti-national" activity of filling up the SYL canal. In a statement issued here today Mr Chautala said Mr Mann's action would prove harmful to both states and Haryana would not tolerate it at any cost. He said Punjab and Haryana were like brothers but everything, including river waters, was partitioned. Haryana's share in the river waters, as determined by the Eradi Tribunal, could not flow to the state except through the SYL canal. Therefore, the completion of the canal was a life and death issue for Haryana, which was asking only for its rights and not for any alms. Accusing the Haryana Chief Minister, Mr Bansi Lal, of not being sincere towards the construction of the canal, Mr Chautala said otherwise Mr Bansi Lal would have accepted his suggestion to convene a special session of the state assembly after the Punjab Chief Minister, Mr Parkash Singh Badal, said that there was no need to construct the SYL canal. The Lok Dal leader said he had suggested the convening of the special session so that all political parties of the state could adopt a unanimous resolution urging the Centre to expedite construction of the canal. He said the Congress, the
HVP and the BJP were to be blamed equally for the
non-completion of the canal in Punjab territory. If the
Centre could resolve the Cavery water dispute, there was
no reason why it could not resolve the SYL issue as well.
He urged the Centre to hand over construction of the
canal to the Border Roads Organisation so that the river
waters flowing to Pakistan could be used in Haryana. |
