Gag order issued in Anwar trial
KUALA LUMPUR, May 4 (AFP) — A Malaysian High Court judge today issued a gag order and set June 7 as the date for the trial of ousted deputy premier Anwar Ibrahim for sodomy, only weeks after he was jailed for six years for corruption. Justice Abdul Wahab Patail barred lawyers from making public comments and ordered journalists to restrict their reports to the proceedings of the trial.

Accused kills cop
MEERUT, May 4 (PTI) — A murder accused shot dead a police Inspector when he went to arrest him at a village in this district, Deputy Inspector General V.K. Gupta said here today. Inspector Shelendra Kumar Tomar of Baghpat police station was killed last night when he went to arrest Sanjiva, charged with the murder of 26-year-old Kuldeep, alias Titu at Sarurpur village, about 45 km from here.

SI beaten up
SAMASTIPUR, May 4 (UNI) — A police Sub-Inspector was hospitalised after he was beaten up by angry villagers for allegedly helping two thieves in Mathurapur near here yesterday. The Inspector drew the ire of the people when one of the thieves tried to flee on his motorcycle after trying to loot a shop. The thieves managed to escape, the police said.

Cabinet status
NEW DELHI, May 4 (PTI) — Dilip Singh Bhuria, chairman of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Commission, was today granted status of a Cabinet Minister with immediate effect, official sources said. Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee had recommended to President K.R. Narayanan to grant Cabinet rank to Bhuria. The President accepted the recommendation today.

Tamil youth in army
COLOMBO, May 4 (PTI) — The Sri Lankan Army, for the first time since ethnic war erupted in the island nation in 1983, has decided to recruit Tamil minority youth from North and East in its ranks as part of a special drive to combat the LTTE, official media here said today. Tamil youth between the ages of 18 and 25 from minority community areas would be recruited in defence forces as part of a wider army recruitment drive to intensify offensive against the rebels.
