New roads to
"boost" tourism CHAMBA, May 4 The Himachal Pradesh Government has decided to spend Rs 205 crore on construction of roads and bridges in the state during the current fiscal year. A sum of Rs 6 crore would be spent on the construction of roads and bridges in Churah subdivision of Chamba district with assistance from NABARD ( National Bank of Rural Development) this year. This was stated by Himachal Industries Minister, Kishori Lal while presiding over the concluding function of a three-day "churah utsav" at Bhanjraru, subdivisional headquarters of Churah in Chamba district, 65 km from here, yesterday. The main thrust would be to link picturesque sites and religious places with a view to promoting tourism in the state. The Minister said there was a proposal to connect the adjacent Pangi valley with Churah and Chamba towns via Devikothi by constructing a tunnel. Earlier, Mr Mohan Lal, Minister for Ayurveda, said he had been assigned the task of assessing losses due to the current heatwave. He said he had been asked by the Chief Minister to hold meetings with Deputy Commissioners and district officers and submit a report to the state government shortly so that assistance could be provided to affected areas as water sources had gone dry. He admitted to shortage of fodder at various places due to the long dry spell. He said he would apprise the Chief Minister of the situation. Mr Tulsi Ram, MLA from
Bharmaur, and Mr Des Raj Sharma, Chairman, Zila Prishad,
were among those present. |
Forest fires: people's help
sought JAWALAMUKHI, May 4 The district administration has decided to seek people's active co-operation to tackle the menace of forest fires, and acute shortage to potable water in the area. This was stated by Mr Brij Kumar Aggarwal, Deputy Commissioner, Kangra, today while addressing a gathering of representatives of gram panchayats, zila parishads, block samitis and government officials. A control room had been set up under the supervision of the Additional District Magistrate to deal with the situation. The control room would be manned round the clock, he said. The Deputy Commissioner asked people to harness traditional water resources to cope up with the water shortage. Tankers would be pressed into service to provide potable water in villages having chronic water shortage. DHARAMSALA: The district administration on Tuesday claimed that the water situation and forest fires in the district were under control and they were geared up to meet the challenge. Addressing a joint press conference here, the Deputy Commissioner, Mr B.K. Aggarwal, the IPH Chief Engineer, Mr S.K. Gupta, and the Conservator of Forests, Mr O.P. Sharma, disclosed the arrangements made by them to tackle the situation arising out of severe drought and hot weather conditions. The Forest Conservator said despite the devolution of power to panchayats, to create fire-fighting squads, the process had not even begun. The Forest Department itself had so far not taken action against those not co-operating with them in controlling fires. The DC, the Chief
Engineer said they had identified the sensitive areas,
where the water scarcity, could become very acute in the
coming days. To tackle the problem the government had
sanctioned the installation of 100 new hand pumps, work
on which would be taken up on a war footing. A sum of Rs
32.50 lakh had already been given for the hand pumps and
an additional Rs 30 lakh for providing tankers for
supplying water. The repair of the traditional water
sources like the 'kuhls' and 'bowris' was also being
undertaken. |
