ISLAMABAD, May 11 (AFP) — A Pakistani Supreme Court judge today suspended the disqualification from Parliament of Asif Ali Zardari, husband of former Premier Benazir Bhutto, court officials said. Justice Irshad Hasan Khan ordered the move during a hearing on Zardari's appeal against his conviction, along with Ms Bhutto, on corruption charges. The measure will be confined only to Zardari, who is a member of the Senate.

Refinery death toll rises to 6
PANIPAT, May 11 (FOC) — The death toll in Panipat Refinery has increased to six with the death of M.C. Mondal, operator, Indian Oil Corporation, Panipat, last night at Apollo Hospital in New Delhi. Meanwhile, hospital sources confirmed the death. The second injured with 100 per cent burns is struggling for life.

Bangladesh protests
DHAKA, May 11 (ANI) — In fresh violence over power and water shortages, the Bangladesh police today fought with protesters demanding the resignation of the government. Up to 15 activists were injured and an unspecified number detained after they exploded dozens of home-made bombs in the Bangladesh capital, witnesses said.

Lone gets passport
NEW DELHI, May 11 (PTI) — The government has agreed to the recommendation of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to permit Hurriyat leader Abdul Gani Lone to travel to the USA for medical treatment in view of his failing health. The Ministry of Home Affairs conveyed its decision in a letter to the commission on May 6, a NHRC release here today said, Mr Lone's passport will be valid for three months.

Vigilance panel
CHENNAI, May 11 (PTI) — The Tamil Nadu government has agreed in principle to set up a vigilance commission to prove allegations of corruption against chief ministers, ministers and heads of civic bodies. The state government has accepted the suggestion made in this regard by the Justice G. Ramanujam Commission, constituted by it to recommend administrative reforms and eradicate corruption at high places.

ULFA kills 7 cops
GUWAHATI, May 11 (UNI) — Seven police constables were killed and two seriously injured in an ambush by suspected ULFA militants in Nagaon district this morning, official sources said. The militants fired indiscriminately from sophisticated weapons on the police party of the Second Assam Police Task Force, killing seven policemen and injuring two others. The militants looted all the arms and ammunition, sources said.Top
