22 rescued from ocean
SUVA
(Fiji), May 25 (Reuters) Twentytwo tourists were
plucked from the sea north of Fiji's main island of Viti
Levu today after their outboard launch capsized the
police said. Seven tourists were rescued by a passing
cruise ship in the early hours today, while another 15
were picked up after a massive sea and air search. The
launch carrying 22 tourists and one crew, capsized in
rough seas while en route from the Yasawa group of
islands to Viti Levus' west coast normally a three
to four hours' journey.Cops hurt by mob
MAINPURI,
May 25 (UNI) Several policemen were injured when
an irate mob protesting against a child's death in an
accident, attacked a police party when the latter tried
to clear the blockade laid by the mob on the
Mainpuri-Etawah road near Karhal town yesterday. The
crowd also snatched away a police officers' revolver and
stoned the Deputy Superintendent of Police (Dy SP) Mr
A.K. Bhatnagar's car, injuring his driver and leaving the
vehicle badly damaged. The DSP who fled to escape the
wrath of the crowd was chased by it up to a local inter
college where he took refuge. The crowd could be pacified
after SDM Radhakrishna along with a large police force
reached the spot.
Cyclone toll 100
KARACHI,
May 25 (DPA) Bodies of 600 persons killed in a
cyclone that hit Pakistan's coast last week were today
reported floating in a waterway southeast of Karachi.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who visited the devastated
area, was told by survivors that the bodies were in Sir
Creek, the daily Dawn newspaper said. Several thousand
people were uprooted by cyclone 2A, which hit the coast
southeast of Karachi last Thursday, Hundreds of residents
and fishermen were feared to have been washed away by
tidal waves. Officials, however, have only confirmed 235
deaths.
Ivanov's China
visit
MOSCOW, May
25 (AP) Foreign Minister IGOR Ivanov will travel
to China and Sweden for talks on finding a political
solution to end the Yugoslavia conflict, the Foreign
Ministry said today. Mr Ivanov will make a 24-hour trip
to Stockholm, Sweden tomorrow for a meeting with United
Nations Secretary-General Kofi Anan. The talks will focus
on Russian and U.N. efforts to mediate the Kosovo crisis.
Russia is eager to broker a political solution that would
end NATO airstrikes in Yugoslavia. But has had little
success so far it has said the United Nations, not NATO
should mediate any potential settlement.
102 militants
surrender
NAGAON, May
25 (PTI) As many as 102 militants of various
banned extremist organisations surrendered before the
Assam government here today. Chief Minister Prafulla
Kumar Mahanta and GOC, four corps Lt Gen D.B. Shekatkar
later denied that any militant was forced by the Army to
lay down arms. Calling on the media to reflect the
"correct picture" of the state, Mr Mahanta told
reporters that a major chunk of funds allotted for
developmental works were spent in containing militancy in
the state. The Lt-Gen said three rounds of talks were
held by the Army with top ULFA militants belonging to the
political and armed wings since April 21 last.
