FEROZEPORE
Wheat procurement: Mansa has topped Ferozepore, Faridkot, Moga, Muktsar and Bathinda districts in the procurement of wheat. Giving this information on Wednesday, the Deputy Director (Field), Food and Supplies Department, Mr Inderdeep Singh, said a total of 4.28 lakh mts of wheat was procured against the target of 3.4 lakh mts.

JALANDHAR
Dharna:
The Students Parents Association staged a dharna here on Thursday in front of the office of the Principal of Dayanand Model School, Model Town, against the hike in fees. According to Mr T.C. Sharma, President of the association, the agitation would go on till the school authorities withdrew the hike.

LUDHIANA
Camp for animals:
The local chapter of the People for Animals organised an animal welfare camp here on Thursday. Around 150 animals were examined by a team of veterinarians from the Animal Husbandry Department.

Resentment: The Panchayati Raj Employees Joint Action Committee has expressed resentment at the non-implementation of the revised travelling allowances for junior engineers of the department. Mr S.L. Sharma, convener of the committee, said in a press not here on Thursday that while junior engineers of other departments were getting Rs 480 per month as travelling allowance, they were getting only Rs 240.

Appointed:
Ms Sushila Syal has been appointed Organising Secretary of the Punjab Mahila Congress.

Dharna: The local unit of the All-India Telecom Employees Union (Namboodiri) staged a dharna in front of the District Telecom Office here on Thursday. The union was demanding the filling of various vacant posts and the opening of TRA branches at the sub-divisional level.

Stir threat: The State Revenue Patwar Union has threatened to launch an agitation from June 1 if the Punjab Government did not implement the "accepted" demands of the union.

Varsity project: Under a coordinated project involving scientists from ZSI-Solan, ZSI-Dehra Dun, BSI-Dehra Dun and Punjabi University, three units of this project have been sanctioned to the university with Prof Tarlok Singh, Dr H.S. Rose and Dr Devinder Singh from the department of Zoology and Prof M. Sharma from the Department of Botany as investigators.top

Education campaign: The Prajapita Brahma Kumaris Ishwariya Vishvavidyalaya and the Rajyoga Education and research Foundation will launch a "value-based education campaign" for Himachal Pradesh from May 29 to check the degradation of values in the present education system. A 10-member team of educationists will participate in the campaign,to be launched by the DPI (Primary), Punjab, at Rajyoga Bhavan, Sector 33, on Saturday.

Delegation: A delegation of Chandigarh Government College Laboratory Staff Association met Mr D.S. Mangat, DPI Schools and Colleges, on Friday. The delegation, led by Mr Ashwini Kumar Sharma, President of the association, demanded the confirmation, promotion and filling of vacant posts.

Elected: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Income Tax and Sales Tax Bar Association: president — Mr Daljit Singh Sandhu; senior vice-president — Mr R.K. Juneja; vice-presidents — Mr S.K. Sahni and Mr Prem Inder Rattan; general secretary — Mr Kulbir Jain; secretary — Mr Mahesh Chand Goyal; joint secretary — Mr Vipin Gupta; and treasurer — Mr Sushil Ghai.

Postponed: The general body meeting of the Chandigarh Beopar mandal, which was scheduled to be held on May 29 at the Sood Bhavan, has been postponed in view of the cricket match between England and India, according to a press note.

PANCHKULA
Cultural programme: As many as 100 folk artists from different states presented a programme of songs and dances at a cultural evening organised by the Haryana Cultural Affairs Department and the North Zone Cultural Centre at Yavanika open air theatre here on Thursday. The folk dances presented by the artists were Bihu from Assam, Lavani from Maharashtra, Rai from Madhya Pradesh and Purulia from West Bengal.

Disbursed: The Haryana Fisheries Department disbursed a subsidy of Rs 1,66,170 during the last three years to promote blue revolution in the district. Mr Ravi Batala, Fisheries Officer, said on Friday that during the current financial year, the department had set a target of 505 tonnes of fish production in 115 hectares.top

Houses burgled:
Three houses at Shiv Colony, here were burgled on Thursday. Cash, gold and a scooter were taken away by miscreants. A case has been registered.

PANIPAT
Case solved:
The police claims to have solved a case of robbery with the arrest of Sitender who was reportedly involved in two cases of bank robberies. Two members of his gang, Karambir and Joga Singh from Uttar Pradesh, however, are still at large. The police has recovered Rs 17,000 from the possession of Sitender.

Open darbar: The district administration organised an open darbar at Chhajpur Khurd village, 9 km from here, on Wednesday. As many as 35 complaints were received.

Milk producers: The Milk Production Society of Israna Block of this district organised a bonus distribution function at Ahar village, 30 km from here. The Deputy Commissioner, Mr Anurag Rastogi, who was the chief guest, distributed Rs 80,000 as bonus to 460 milk producers of Ahar and Israna villages.

ROHTAK
Chemist shop sealed:
The District Drug Control authorities on Wednesday cancelled the licence of Dhingra Medicos on a charge of possessing and selling expired drugs and physicians' samples. The authorities conducted a raid and sealed the chemist shop on Tuesday last.

Houses constructed: As many as 486 houses were constructed at a cost of Rs 91.68 lakh in the district under the Indira Aawas Yojna during 1998-99. Stating this here on Thursday, Mr Anil Kumar, Deputy Commissioner, said 120 houses were constructed in Rohtak block, 107 houses in Kalanaur block, 94 houses in Sampla block, 100 houses in Meham block and 65 houses in Lakhan Majra block.

Seeds distributed: The Agriculture Department distributed 8,690 quintals of wheat seeds, 1273 quintal of cotton, 694 quintal of paddy, 300 quintal of millet and 236 quintal of mustard among farmers in the district at subsidised rates in 1998-99.

Cheated:
As many as 36 electricity consumers of Mangalia village in this district were reportedly cheated on Thursday by three persons who came on a scooter and introduced themselves as senior officers of the Haryana Vidyut Parsaran Nigam, Panchkula. It is reported that on the pretext of checking meters, they collected huge amounts of money from them.

Student injured: Roshan Lal, a student of ITI, sustained head injuries when a truck hit him near the institute on Thursday. The truck driver has been arrested and the injured admitted to the Civil Hospital.

Yellow cards: Resentment prevails over the distribution of yellow cards in the district. Deputy Commissioner Avtar Singh has been receiving complaints in this regard for about two months. He has assured the complainants that yellow cards will be issued to the deserving after a fresh survey has been conducted.

Arrested: Inder Singh Sunar, Tanish and Mohan Lal Agarwal of Mandi Wali in this district were arrested under the Gambling Act on Wednesday. A sum of Rs 2,100 was recovered from their possession.

Assaulted: Ms Veena Rani of Lakhi Talab mohalla was seriously injured and her shop damaged by miscreants on Wednesday. A case under Sections 323,324 and 31 IPC, has been registered against Suresh, Kishori, Kala and Gogi, who are reportedly missing.

Injured: Shiv Kumar of Jodhpuria village was allegedly injured with sharp-edged weapons by Devi Lal and his brother, Balram, on Wednesday. A case has been registered against the accused.

SONEPAT
Arrested:
The police has arrested Manoj and Jai Singh of Dhaturi village for allegedly committing theft near Larsauli village on Tuesday. According to the SSP, stolen property has been recovered from the possession of the accused.

Anti-cholera steps: The district administration has taken steps to check the spread of cholera and other water-borne diseases in the district. According to Mr P.K. Mahapatra, District Magistrate, these measures include a ban on the sale of over-ripe fruits and vegetables, and sugarcane juice etc.top

Enrolment drive:
A special enrolment drive has been launched here to achieve 100 per cent enrolment target of school-going children at the primary school level. Centre head teachers, panchayat pradhans, mahila mandals, sakhsharta samities, SDMs and gram sewaks have been directed to launch an awareness campaign in their respective areas up to June 2.

NURPUR
Suspended:
Parshotam Dass, a guard of the Chhatroli forest beat, has been suspended by the Divisional Forest Officer for allegedly submitting a false report of an illegal saw mill in his area. Meanwhile, the Assistant Conservator of Forest has started a spot inquiry into the reported large-scale illicit felling of trees in the Indora and Gangath forest blocks.
