AMRITSAR
Illegal confinement:
Employees of the Punjab State Electricity Board here criticised the illegal confinement and torture of their colleague, Sajjan Singh, by the police. The PSEB Employees Federation in a press note issued here on Wednesday alleged that the DSP, CIA, Mr Gurmail Singh, and SHO, Jhandher police station, had picked up Sajjan Singh on October 25 in spite of opposition by the village panchayat. It alleged that the victim was tortured and kept in custody for three days and released after a protest by the villagers. They demanded strict action against the erring police officers.

BATHINDA
Arrest sought:
The PSEB Engineers Association, the Council of Junior Engineers, the Technical Service Union and the Punjab State Electricity Board Employees Federation has urged the authorities concerned to arrest the main accused involved in the attack on Mr Kartar Singh Brar, Xen, Mr Fakir Chand, AEE, Mr Sukhdev Singh, JE and other staff members on October 26. They had gone to raid a hotel for theft of electricity when its owner attacked them.

GURDASPUR
Accused:
Dr Joginder Dyal, Secretary, Punjab State Council of Communist Party of India, while talking to mediapersons here on Thursday accused Mr Parkash Singh Badal, Chief Minister, his political colleagues and ministers for abusing their political power in the election of the SGPC President.

Office-bearers: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Rotary Club to (mid-town) here: President — Mr Tilak Raj Gupta; Vice-Presidents — Mr S.S. Kondal and Mr S.S. Jaspal; Secretary — Prof Raj Kumar Sharma; Joint Secretary — Mr J.S. Dhillon; and Treasurer — Mr Santosh Khosla.

Jobs given: As many as 11 relatives of Kargil martyrs have been absorbed in government service of the 13 families in the district. All 13 families of martyrs have been given Rs 5 lakh each for the construction of house or purchase of plot.

KAPURTHALA
Dharna:
Workers of the Pendu Mazdoor Union on Wednesday staged a dharna in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner to press their demands. Their demands included withdraw tax on commodities of daily use and concessions to the aged.

Case registered: A case has been registered under Section 306 of IPC in connection with the burning to death of the Pritam Kaur (74) of Jatpura Mohalla. Mr Iqbal Singh, SSP, said the investigation had been entrusted to Mr Baldev Singh, DSP, and asked him to submit his report within a week.

MOGA
Manhole covers:
Residents here have complained that certain persons here have stolen manhole covers creating death traps in several areas. They said these covers had been stolen due to the absence of patrolling police. They urged the authorities to cover these manholes.

Water cooler donated: Nestle India Limited, a multinational company, has donated a water cooler to the Dev Samaj School for Boys on its centenary celebrations, according to the Principal of the school, Mr Kewal Krishan Arora, here on Wednesday.

PHILLAUR
Scooterist killed:
Prem Kumar was killed on the spot and 38 passengers, including women, sustained injuries when their bus hit the scooter of Prem Kumar near Sutlej on Wednesday.

Training: The Punjab Health Minister, Mr Manoranjan Kalia, has said some specialist doctors will be sent to the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi, and the PGI FMY for specialised training in treatment with modern technology. Speaking to mediapersons here on Wednesday he said 250 doctors had been suspended for dereliction of work.

PHAGWARA
Traffic blocked:
Agitating cane growers blocked the traffic on GT Road on Wednesday for over an hour and staged a dharna in front of the SDM's office to urge the Punjab Government to make arrangements for lifting cane from the mill gates. They also sought an announcement regarding the cane price.

Strike: Private college teachers here went on a two-period strike on Wednesday in support of their demands. A rally was also held. Prof Jaswant Singh, a PCCTU leader, stated that a state-level dharna would be held in front of the office of the DPI office, Chandigarh, on November 25.

Indefinite strike: Autorickshaws on Wednesday joined the van operators' indefinite strike that entered its third day. They held a rally and staged a dharna to demand regular permits and end to their harassment by transport and traffic officials.

Children's Day:
A state-level Children's Day function will be organised at Nehru Stadium here on November 14. Mr Madan Mohan Mittal, Food and Supply Minister, Punjab, will be the chief guest.

Painting contest: More than 5,000 children of various schools in the city and its surrounding areas are expected to participate in an on-the-spot painting competition to be held at Fun City, near here, on Friday between 10 a.m. and 12 noon. According to Mr Kamaljit Singh, Managing Director of Fun City, competitions will be held in three groups — for children upto primary classes, for middle standard and for senior classes (IX to XII).

PANCHKULA
SMO's clarification:
The Senior Medical Officer, Dr Kamla Singh, clarified, here on Friday, that no patient had ever been referred to any private clinic and that doctors were not supposed to do so. Any reference from the hospital was made only to the PGI in Chandigarh.

SAS NAGAR
Arrested:
At least three members of the All-India Balmiki Prabandhak Committee were taken into custody by the local police as preventive arrests from Phase 3A, here on Friday. They were on a fast against the demolition of a religious place of the community.

BHIWANI
Concessional rates:
Mr Arun Gupta, Deputy Commissioner, said here on Thursday that under the agriculture implements scheme of the Government of India the farmers of the district would be given 12 tractors at concessional rates. The intending buyers should contact the office of the Haryana Agro-Industries Corporation on Loharu road here before November 26.

Electoral rolls: Mr Arun Gupta, Deputy Commissioner and District Election Officer, told mediapersons here on Thursday that the publication of the amended electoral rolls of the Zila Parishad and nagar palikas would be made on December 9 taking into account the qualified date as January 1, 2000.

KAITHAL
Gang members held:
A gang of chain snatchers was arrested from the local bus stand here on Wednesday when three members of the gang snatched a gold chain from a woman while she was boarding a bus. The woman raised an alarm and the police along with some passengers caught the culprits.

PANIPAT
Open darbar:
As many as 25 applications were received at an open darbar organised by the district administration at Jalalpur village here on Wednesday. The additional Deputy Commissioner, Mr R.B.Langyan, presided.

Cane crushing: The crushing of sugarcane at the Panipat Cooperative Sugar Mill commenced on Tuesday by organising a yajna on the premises of the sugar mill. The Deputy Commissioner and Chairman of the mill, Mr Sandeep Garg, the Managing Director of the mill, Mr Lajveer Singh, the Additional Deputy Commissioner, Mr R.B.Langyan and other mill workers participated.

Abducted:
A young married woman was allegedly abducted by a youth of Beri subdivision in Jhajjar district on Wednesday. According to police sources, the mother of the victim, Mrs Kamla Devi, in her complaint to the police has alleged that her daughter (18) was abducted by Navin of the same village. A case under Sections 363 and 366, IPC, has been registered.

Water shortage: Residents of the local Bank Colony have been facing an acute shortage of drinking water for the past several months. They alleged that repeated complaints made to the Public Health authorities has had no effect. Mr Om Parkash Chautala, Chief Minister, has been urged to intervene.

SONEPAT
Car thief held:
The CIA staff on Thursday claimed to have recovered a Mahindra jeep which belonged to Mr Raj Kumar Balmiki, a former MLA and was allegedly stolen two-and-a-half years ago, Rajesh of Gohana town has been arrested in this connection. The police had organised a naka near Fazilpur village to apprehend some criminals. The culprit was given a signal to stop and it was found that he had no relevant documents.

KUMARHATTI
Held for abusing:
A case under Sections 290, 510 and 186, IPC, has been registered against Luxmi Dutt of Gandhi Gram village for allegedly abusing panchayat President Sheela Devi in an inebriated condition. The accused was taken to the Daghshai police station where a medical check -up confirmed that he was drunk.

Wood sleepers seized: A truck carrying dyar and kail wood sleepers was seized by the Dharampur police at the Kasauli chowk near here on Tuesday. According to the police, the driver, Rattan Lal, alias Rattu, and the cleaner were arrested. The truck was carrying 63 sleepers of dyar and 11 sleepers of kail. A case has been registered under Sections 41, 42, 33, 69 of the IFA and 379 of IPC.
