AMRITSAR
Killed:
Pillion rider Vijay Kumar (65) died on the spot when the scooter which was being driven by his son collided with an oil tanker near Hall Gate here on Thursday. His son however, escaped unhurt. The driver of the oil tanker has been arrested.

Pak nationals dead: Two Pakistanis, undergoing imprisonment in Central Jail here, have died during the past week, Jail Superintendent Jagjit Singh Shinh, said on Thursday. One of them died due to acute gastro-enteritis while the cause of the death of the other is not known.

FEROZEPORE
Office-bearers:
The following have been elected office-bearers of the local Civil Hospital class IV Government Employees Union: president — Mr Ram Dass; senior vice-president — Mr M S Balbir Kaur; vice-president — Mr Sudhir Kumar; general secretary — Mr Roshan Lal and treasurer — Mr Resham Singh.

Rally: Members of the district Paramedical and Health Employees Union staged a rally outside the local Civil Hospital here on Thursday. They urged the civil surgeon to pay dues to those paramedical employees and volunteers who had worked during the polio eradication campaign. The president of the union, Mr Alvin Bhatia, said those who had administered 300 polio drops were entitled to get Rs 300 for refreshment and Rs 75 for training, respectively.

HOSHIARPUR
PM criticised:
Mr Charanjit Singh, MP, has criticised the Prime Minister and the National Democratic Alliance for dragging the name of Rajiv Gandhi in the Bofors pay-off charge-sheet. In a press note here on Thursday, he stated that by equating the assassin of Indira Gandhi with Rajiv Gandhi, Information and Broadcasting Minister Arun Jaitley had tried to place murderers and martyrs in the same category.

LUDHIANA
Grant:
The Rural Development Board, Punjab, has released a grant of Rs 2 crore for the Post-Harvest Technology Centre for Fruits and Vegetables. According to Dr Ajit Singh Dhatt, Director of the centre, the grant will be utilised for procuring machinery and other infrastructure.

NAWANSHAHR
Cheques given:
Dr Roshan Sunkaria, Deputy Commissioner, on Thursday gave a cheque for Rs 1 lakh to Mrs Palvinder Kaur, widow of Dalwinder Singh of 32 Rashtriya Rifles who died at Kupwara during "operation rakshak". Cheques worth Rs 50,000 each were given to Mr Surjit Singh and Ms Chanan Kaur, parents of the martyr.

Workers' union:
The following have been elected office-bearers of the district unit of the All-Private Transporters Workers Union: president — Mr Gurnam Singh; senior vice-president — Mr Tarsem Singh Sandhu; and secretary — Mr Baldev Singh Babbu.

Nominated: Mr Gurcharan Singh Tohra, president, SHSAD, has nominated Dr Fauja Singh, a local leader, as president of the district unit of the Dalit Front of the Dal.

Elected: The following have been elected office-bearers of the UT Teachers Association: President- Mr Amar Singh Hyatpur; Sr Vice President — Mr Ramesh Kumar Vasdev; Vice Presidents — Mr S. S. Gill and Mr Rajinder Kumar; and General Secretaries — Ashok Kumar Sharma and Mr Jagtar Singh Rana.

Children’s Day: The Chandigarh Industrial and Tourism Development Corporation (CITCO) will celebrate ‘‘Children’s Day’’ at the Sukhna Lake on November 14. According to a press note here, a clown will entertain and distribute free gift coupons to the children visiting the lake on that day. A magic show and musical programme will be other highlights in the evening.

Fee hike: The President of the Panjab University Students Council, Mr Dyal Pratap Singh Randhawa, on Friday called upon the university authorities to immediately roll back the fee hike and return the balance to the students. He warned that if the “unjust” rules were not done away with quickly, students would be forced to go in for an immediate agitation.

Plea for help: Local Oriya population’s panel, the Utkal Sanskrutik Sangh has urged residents to help in cash or kind for the cyclone-hit people in Orissa. Donations can be made at the Shree Jagannath Temple in Sector 31-D. The sangh will also accept cheques and demand drafts made in favour of “Prime Minister Relief Fund” (Orissa Super Cyclone). These will be forwarded to the right destination.

Pilgrimage: Pilgrims belonging to various churches of the city will leave for the holy shrine of Mother Mary (mother of Lord Jesus Christ), Sardhana (Meerut), where a two- day annual pilgrimage starts on Saturday. The devotees will be leaving by buses. A bus of the St Mary Sardhana Yatra Society will leave from here on Saturday.

PANCHKULA
Ear camp:
The District Health Authority will conduct a free audiometric check-up camp on November 17, at the General Hospital, here in Sector 6. The camp is being organised to commemorate the National Deaf Day on November 17. Dr Vijay Garg of the General Hospital, informed that advanced hearing aids would be made available to the patients at the camp at concessional rates.

Rash driving: Prabhat Kumar Sharma, a resident of Sector 10, registered a complaint of rash and negligent driving against Kavita, a resident of the same sector. In the complaint, he stated that he was injured after Kavita, driving her scooter, banged into him on the road dividing sectors 9 and 10. A case under sections 279, 338 of the IPC has been registered.

Aid: The Residents Welfare Association, Sector 21, in association with the Shiv Shakti Mahila Sankeertan Mandal, collected 25000 pieces of clothing, 33 bags of foodgrains, and 800 pairs of shoes for the victims of the cyclone in Orissa which was handed over to the District Administration.

Appeal: The All-India Hindu Maha Sangh has appealed to the Prime Minister to initiate the construction of Shri Ram Mandir at Ayodhya as mentioned in the manifesto, adding that the construction of a Masjid should also begin simultaneously. The organisation also demanded a ban on the use of photographs of gods and goddesses on calendars, cigarettes and business advertisements by an ordinance.

Jagran: A Bhagwati Jagran will be organised by the Punjabi Maha Sabha at the crossing of sectors 11 and 15 on Saturday where woollens will be distributed to 50 orphan children, according to Mr Pawan Valecha, President of the organisation, in a statement issued, here.

PINJORE
One killed:
One person died after a speeding tempo (HP-14-4836) hit a motor cycle (HR-01-3449) on the Nalagarh road, here on Friday. The driver of the tempo fled from the scene. A case under sections 279, 304 of the IPC has been registered against the driver.

SAS NAGAR
Seminar:
A state-level seminar on “Print media — duties towards children’’ will be organised by the Mohali Working Journalists Association in collaboration with the Punjab School Education Board at the Board’s complex on Saturday. The seminar will be inaugurated by Mr Gurbachan Singh Bhullar, Editor, Punjabi Tribune.

Global conference:
A four-day international conference on "Sustainable Animal Production, Health and Environment: Future Challenges" will be held at Haryana Agricultural University from November 24. About 150 delegates from India and abroad will participate.

REWARI
Honoured:
As many as 20 activists of the erstwhile Bharatiya Jansangh, now BJP who went to jail during the Emergency in 1975, were honoured at a function organised under the auspices of the district unit of the Bharatiya Janta Yuva Morcha here on Wednesday.

Women, son killed: Shakuntla Devi (26), her brother Karan Singh (25), and her son Jhamman (6) were killed on the spot when their scooter was knocked down by a private bus near chowki no 11 on the Rewari-Narnaul road, 20 km from here, on Wednesday. A case has been registered.

YAMUNANAGAR
Cane support price:
Farmers of this district have expressed their happiness over the announcement of Rs 110 per quintal as support price for sugarcane by the Chief Minister. They said this was the highest-ever cane price in the state.

Dead:
Sunita Devi (30), wife of Nandraj of Bandla village, died in mysterious circumstances, 25 km from here, on Thursday. The cause of her death is being investigated.

2 killed in accident: Neena Devi (31) and her two-year-old son died on the spot when the scooter on which they were pillion-riding was hit by a Maruti car on the national highway near "Kala Baba ki Kutia" on Wednesday night.

DHARAMSALA
Manhunt launched: The police has launched a search operation for a man who allegedly raped a schoolgirl at Rana ka Talab near Nurpur on Tuesday. The man has been identified as Chain Singh and is reportedly missing. A case under Section 376, IPC, has been registered.

KULU
Electoral rolls:
The District Election Officers here has said the short revision of electoral rolls will be done from November 15 to November 30 as per the directives of the Election Commission. People can apply for inclusion or deletion of their names at their respective polling stations. The final settlement of the claims will be undertaken on January 5.
